Hello Jeremy,

I need some information regarding the HULT MBA (Boston), which has started its new campus in Dubai. Can you tell me about the placement opportunities after MBA from HULT? (If you have any idea)

My profiles is

GMAT- 560 awa 4/6 (I am retaking the GMAT exam on Dec29th)

TOEFL -- 95(ibt)

Work Experience of 4.5 years by August 2008.
International experience 2 years (in UK for past 1.5 years)

Good Number of Extra curricular Activities

I am looking for doing 1 year MBA from either Indian MBA college and college in USA which could give me funding. Funding is the major problem for me.

CAn you please suggest me which colleges should i look for , so that i can be more practical ?

Thank you for your inquiry.

It seems to me that you are looking for a school that emphasizes academic and practical elements. Virtually every US and European school fits this bill, but if you are limiting yourself to one year programs, Kellogg, Insead and CBS (16 month) program really are the only top-schools that meet your needs. These schools generally require $100K+ in investment and their average GMAT scores are about 700. They should appreciate your family business experience.

Hello Jeremy,

I am a novice to the world of Foreign B-Schools. My work experience is as follows
21 months work in a software MNC
16 months in my Family Business related to manufacturing of Auto Parts. It is a small scale setup started by my father.

I have given the aptitude tests of some of the top Indian B-Schools. But the Group Discussion and Personal Interviews r due for March/April. Recently, I had a chat with a gal studying in one of the topmost B-Schools in India. Nd she found the program to be academically oriented with very less value addition. Apparently, since Indian B-Schools take in freshers as well, many of them cram to get good scores. This was shocking and not something I am looking for in a B-School.

Secondly, Many B-Schools in India dont take Work-Ex in Family Business in the right spirit. I think B-Schools in the West have a totally reverse attitude. Since, M.B.A is a significant and once in a lifetime investment. I wanna explore all the avenues (foreign B-Schools) before finally making a call.

Can u lend me more insight as to
1) Global B-Schools with significant learning coupled with decent placements nd packages.
2) Any good one year program that fits the bill.
3) I have nt given the GMAT and vil b able to give it only after March / April. What would be the best time to give it and get into a B-School at the earliest. What r the scores v r looking at ?
4) Investments to be made.

Thanks,
Shreyash.

Thank you for your inquiry.

If you aspire to attend a top-US business school, then "excellence" is the key. there is no pre-determined path and no required number of years of work experience. If you can exhibit excellence in everything you do -- professionally, personally, academically, in your volunteer work, etc. -- you will find your way into a top-school.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Well, there still are many question marks in your application. I am not seeing the professional excellence that is characteristic of HBS, Stanford and Wharton admits. After only 1.5 years as a software engineer, without any promotions, you will struggle to standout from the pack. Further, you highlight your lack of extras yourself. If you sincerely want to attend a top-school, you may want to take a year or two and really build your personal and community profiles. Even then, HBS and Stanford are looking for candidates who are truly distinct -- who truly initiate and get things done. As I just wrote in a previous post "excellence" is the key word -- in every area of your life. There are definitely practical things you can do (and I encourage you to visit the long term planning section of our blog for details), but it is more about the big picture and it seems to me that it will take more time for this to evolve in your case.

Hi Jeremy,

I am :and m planning to take GMAT somewhere around march -april, 08 and will be trying for next fall i.e 2009. Here is my profile detail, Kindly give me a feedback on it and how can i develop it during the next 12 months which i have :
Professional :
Working with a top MNC as a software engg for the last 1.5 yrs ( Me too an IT guy)

Total experience will be 3 yrs when taking admission.
Academics :
B.Tech in Mechanical engg - 74.3% (aggrergate degree)- from a top 15 Engg institute in India.
Generally in the top 15-20 of the class throughout the 4 yrs.
Have been a topper at school level from the beginning.

Also I took a drop yr ( sabbatical) to prepare for my engg entrance exams(Will i need to explain this to adcomm?????:(:(:()

Extracurrics:

They are very good but only at the school and college level.( I have been President of the student club at the college also at school level, organized various inter and intra collegiate functioans and fests)
Professionally I haven't done much as my hectic work schedule didn't permit me to do something of this kind.
But now I am taking time to go to work with an NGO which works for the underpriviledged kids and teach them.
also will be taking time off for my passions like singing, music and dramatics(Do you think these will be thought upon by the adcomm??)??:??:??:

Kindly guide me how should I develop my profile during the next 12 months....as I am planning to apply to only a few schools like HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Tuck,LBS etc.

Thank you for your inquiry.

I would need more information about you in order to consider your chances. Please fill me in on the details of your career history (promotions?), community activities, academics, etc. There are many variables and it is quite difficult to judge from what you have provided.

I look forward to your response.

Hi Jeremy,

My profile-

GMAT-740
graduated from a top 10 engineering college in india
WE-3 yrs by 2008
presently working as a sr. consultant

what do u thing would be my chances in top 30 schools in usa.

I am planning to apply to cornell .
Pls assess my chances and suggest a few good bschools in the us

thanks in advance!!

Jon,

Thank you for your inquiry.

While your education and work experience are impressive, a top-school like HBS or Stanford, will want to see more diversity within your profile and will want to see excellence in these different areas. While a CFA will help, these schools are more concerned with seeing standout leadership in your community or personal endeavors. Can you point to anything in this regard? It will make the difference.

I have an undergrad in engg from India and a masters in comp sc from oxford univ.
2 years work exp as a Business Analyst in an Investment Bank in London
planning to give GMAT this year and apply to only LBS, Harvard, Stanford and Wharton...... I don't intend to study anywhere else as I am quite happy with my work and I want to do an MBA in finance with some strategy management as well so that I can come back to an investment bank with a background in maths and CS and education in finance as well.

if i do get a 720+ in GMAT with very good SOPs and Reccos ...... what are my chances at these BSchools.

Does doing courses like FRM and CFA help your application if you are applying for a Fin course in a B School

Thanks for your time

Thank you for your inquiry.

To be honest, the schools that you have selected are not terribly competitive. I think that your international experience, managerial leadership experience and GMAT should be enough to carry the day for you. I would be surprised if you did not get at least one admit. You should get more.

Please keep me posted.

Thank you for your inquiry.

With a 650, three years in IT and some recent work at an NGO, I think that you will have a rough time cracking the top-15 and maybe even the top-20 US schools. You may want to consider schools like Simon, Olin and Kelley. These schools are still reputable but are not as competitive as the top-tier schools.

Also please advice me on what all things can i do to enhance my profile(like social service).Does work Experience in I.T as a software engineer will really count?

Thanks for your inquiry.

I am not sure that I can tell you which schools will offer you a scholarship. I can help with pop-diagnoses, but I can't tell the future! If anything, I would suggest that Babson is a good school to target as I know firsthand, via clients we have worked with, that they have "healthy" scholarships. I recognize the financial challenges that you will be facing, but top-schools should pay for themselves over time. I would probably target higher ranked schools as well and then weigh the various offers, if/once you get them.

I hope that this helps.

Hi

I am a medicine graduate. Have long nurtured a dream to be a Health Sector Entrepreneur, but can't find any good B-schools in India who can help me in achieving my dream. Seems like they just can't digest the thought that good doctors can be good entrepreneurs also. All they can do is advise me to get into Masters in Health Administration. Anyways, I've checked out the curriculum of lots of B-schools in US & Europe, and now I feel the problem of abundance. My GMAT score is 730 with AWA 6 and have cleared CAT twice with more than 98 %tile, but turned down admission offers twice from three top-rung B-schools in India. I have a 2 year work-ex in Health Insurance and am currently working since 6 months with a group as part of its market research and analysis and product development as Associate. I had enquired at 3 B-schools which have Health Sector MBA, and could list them out for you if you wish. I just can't decide which will be the best school for me. Is it that all schools famous for entrepreneurship (Babson included) are good enough? Or should I stick to the old criterion of going for the best available? Secondly, finances will definitely be an issue, so if I give you the names of 5-6 colleges which are ready to give me a scholarship, will you please please plzzzzzzzz help Jeremy? I am in such a soup I just can't find help. Can you please guide me to the best school? I can give you all further details you want me to, to help me out.
Thanks for the efforts

Thank you for your inquiry.

Every school has different criteria which they use to evaluate GPA conversions. Most schools provide a scale that you can adjust your grades to; but in the case of Indian candidates, it is usually not a just conversion, as percentages tend to look mysteriously low, even though a 65% can be an A+ in certain degrees. For many candidates, it can be quite wise to find out their respective class ranks and then explain their assumptions in presenting the case for a higher GPA in an optional essay.

Long-Term Planning: The Big Picture

By: Jeremy Shinewald of mbaMission

With the final round of MBA applications for almost all of the top schools upon us, we can take a brief moment to reflect on the main story of the year thus far: application volumes are up significantly as a result of economic turmoil. So, with the promise of increased competition for a finite number of spaces going forward, it is best that prospective MBA applicants who are targeting admission for next year (or even beyond) start working to improve their chances now. Further, regardless of this macro-trend, by being proactive, candidates can remove a great deal of stress from the process and ensure that in July, when the 2008 applications appear, they can simply focus on mastering the applications. We at mbaMission have several big picture recommendations for candidates to consider so that they can be as competitive as possible.

Few realize that there is a tremendous opportunity to visit campuses now to learn about and establish interest in specific schools early on. It is important to note that campus visits are not just opportunities to register with the Admissions Committee, but are also a time for you to gain an intimate understanding of various academic methodologies and social environments. However, on a less idealistic note, these visits will certainly help you frame your thoughts and write far more personal essays when the time comes. After all, there is only so much you can learn about a school from its website. So, we advise early campus visits, as they will allow you to experience the true character of your MBA program of choice, absorb the information and then discuss your connection to the school in a profound way.

Beyond campus visits, by meeting with alumni or current students now, you can gain a more intimate understanding of your schools of choice. Current students in particular will have an awareness of specific programs and classes that may not be prominently featured on a schools website, but that may be quite appealing to you and may enable you to strengthen your case for attending that particular school. By meeting with students and alumni and by visiting classes, you will collect a variety of data points that will serve as a foundation for you to persuade the Admissions Committees that their school is ideally suited to you, in a way that few others will be able to do.

While the steps discussed thus far are somewhat subtle, you can take more overt measures to bolster your candidacy. For example, if you have not yet taken a leadership role in your community, you still have nine months in which to create a track record and show that you are a substantive individual outside of the office. If you were to start volunteering in September, your gesture would seem far less sincere, and you would lack the profound experiences to explore in your essays.

When selecting volunteer activities in which to involve yourself, you should first and foremost join organizations about which you feel passionate. If you are excited about your volunteer experience, you will be more committed, enjoy a more profound experience and have a far more genuine story to tell. Ideally, you will create a record of community experiences that will both complement and supplement your profile: the accountant who volunteers with Junior Achievement is complementing his existing profile by showing a commitment to his professional path and the desire to give back in this area; the accountant who coaches soccer in his community is supplementing his profile in that he is offering a new window into his personality and abilities. Your community activities have the power to reveal a true passion for your field (complementary) or to shift the Committees perspective (supplementary) on you and thus differentiate you from many others.

In the examples above, we use Junior Achievement and soccer coaching to illustrate our point; while a solid commitment to any organization will be helpful to your candidacy, the more esoteric the organization, the more distinct you become. While you should not volunteer for a completely obscure organization just to be different, if you are truly passionate about both soccer and antiquities preservation, for example, you should consider volunteering in the latter field, thus increasing your opportunities to discuss this unusual hobby/interest. Regardless of the organization you choose and the nature of your activities, if you can (to cart out a clich) make a difference within your organization and show true leadership in doing so, you should be able to add an entirely new dimension to your application.

Similar to immersing yourself in community endeavors, by advancing personal achievements, you have the power to differentiate yourself from the indistinguishable masses. While every candidate has his/her work experience and academics, you can offer a far more diversified and remarkable picture of yourself through your volunteer and personal accomplishments.

In terms of personal achievements, you should focus on accelerating the timeline of existing endeavors. If you have always intended to publish a certain article and have almost finished a final draft, then finish it. If you have always intended to earn your CFA and only have Level Three of the exam left, then take the final test this year. If you can run 20 miles and have always dreamed of completing a marathon, do it this year. We are not suggesting that if you have never run a mile in your life that you start training for a marathon now; however, if a goal is in sight and will be otherwise achieved after your applications are due, you should accelerate your timeline to ensure that you have completed it before the first-round deadline.

While it is important to build up your personal and community profiles, it can be equally important to bolster your academic profile through additional coursework. Many candidates fret about their poor undergrad performance and feel that they are powerless to change the Admissions Committees perspectives on their academic aptitudes, but MBA programs are actually far more forgiving of previous academic problems than other graduate programs are. For most candidates, their academic experience is far in the past, and their GMAT score, references and work experience are better indicators of their potential for success. This is not to suggest that poor grades do not matter; however, poor grades can be mitigated.

If your academic performance is worrisome to you, you should certainly consider enrolling in additional coursework immediately. In particular, if you did poorly in math courses (even if your overall GPA is quite high), you may raise concerns about your ability to manage a heavily quantitative workload. Thus, you should consider taking a calculus or statistics course. Furthermore, in order to show an aptitude for management studies, you might consider taking an accounting, economics or corporate finance class. Of course, it is important that you get As in these courses to show that you have an aptitude for this kind of work and that you take your academics quite seriously.

It is also important to recognize that additional coursework is not solely the domain of the academically challenged. Even those who did quite well in their undergrad classes might explore the option of taking additional coursework. Liberal Arts majors with 4.0s and no quantitative background can benefit from two As one in a math discipline and one in a management discipline which will allow them to make strong statements about their competencies for their coming studies.

In Part 1 of this series, we have explored some of the major steps you can take to bolster your chances of gaining admission to your preferred MBA schools going forward. In Part 2, which will be published in GMATTERS next week, we will focus on some of the more technical issues that you can consider to get a head start on your applications.

Dear Jeremy,

I'm interested in doing an Integrated Marketing Communications pcourse. I've short listed Medill School of Journalism and Emerson College. Could you please give me some admission tips for these programs. And could you suggest some colleges that are known for their marketing programs.

Thank you for your inquiry. In our experience, a low GMAT score has not hindered clients from getting into Thunderbird or BU and I have to imagine that the same could be said of Central Michigan and Arizona State. You should focus on showcasing your international experience and be sure to emphasize that you are not just a technical candidate. From experience, it seems that these school cant compete on their GMAT and GPA averages so they want to make sure that they choose those with strong work experience first.

Hi Jeremy
Thanks for the reply. I have been working on my applications since my previous post, so couldn't get back to you to say thanks. But now that I have put in my applications to some schools, I have another dilemma. It seems a good GMAT score definitely helps in getting good schools (although I know you cannot get in based solely on the GMAT score). I had researched a bit on schools providing an MBA with concentration in Health Sector, and then applied to the ones I could find. Could you please, please, plzzzzzzzzzzz rank them according to your preference? If asking you to rank them is against the rules of this forum, I sincerely apologize, but then, I have no other resource, coz nobody would rank them for me. Currently I have applied to
1. Bocconi - Masters in International Health Economics, Management and Policy
2. Richard Ivey - Health Sector Management (But man it is more expensive than any other US college - 72k for a one year course)
3. St. Gallen's University
4. Brandeis International School
5. Vlerick Gent School of Management

I am planning to apply to INSEAD, but the implicit necessity of international experience at INSEAD deters me.
Besides the above, I know that the following schools also offer a health sector concentration MBA.
1. Boston University - Health Sector Management
2. Duke - Fuqua
3. Columbia Business School

The five listed at the top are the ones I have already applied to. The three listed just above are the ones I could not apply to, because the deadlines for international applicants had passed.
Could you do me two small (??!!!!!!) favours? Add to this list any other schools that you know provide an MBA in Health Sector Management (Full time, on campus courses, not online).
And could you please rank all the eight colleges listed above (plus the ones you might like to add) according to your experience? I am very much inclined to enter sessions starting 2008, but I can defer my plans to 2009 if the need arises.
Sorry once again, in case this causes any inconvenience. But you are the only guiding light.

Regards
Ajit

Dear Jeremy,

I am targeting the 2009 entry at 10-20 ranked US Schools. Though I like INSEAD, Darden, Tepper and Stern, I am not sure of my chances as well as other schools where I should apply. But first, my profile at a glance:

Electrical Engg from one of the top colleges , 720/5.5, 4 years work-ex by June 09 - (presently) front-end research in a strategy consulting firm as a senior analyst, (past) 2 years equity research (US cap goods sector) as an offshore associate of a top-3 US IB client in Mumbai(my ex-company's client, and I worked as a full time equivalent (FTE) associate). I can get recos from the analysts I worked with - two of whom are Director/VPs in NY. My acads are average (first class but no distinction), but I believe my extra curriculars and varied work-experience should somewhat compensate.

I am interested in pursuing a career in MC.

On a separate note, I have won quite a few certificates in litrary activities such as debates, GDs etc and other events such as Business plan and business case contests in various colleges across India. Though I have not pursued social service as a full-time activity, I do make sure that I donate enough to sponsor 5 cataract operations each year and have also sponsored 1 child's complete education. Besides this, I am a frequent blood donor.

While in college, I started a club that was aimed at improving the communication skills and business acumen of engineering students. This was because I realized even the best students found a tough time writing cover letters/ CVs, and such an effort would go about helping them. The club was a success and drew almost 100 members in a short space of time.

I changed my job because after two-years of back-end work, I had nothing much to add to my cv/learn, and the front-end role came as a pleasant breather, an opportunity to learn further, and gain diverse work-ex. Though I am quite happy with my career progress till date, I will soon come to a point where my company will only hire MBAs (as consultants), and hence, I see not much further upside to my growth. An MBA, therefore is what I am looking at.

Coming back, looking at my profile, what more should I do and which schools should I really look at ?

Regards
