Thank you for your inquiry. It is very difficult to judge your competitiveness based on the information that you have provided. I will need some more depth with respect to your work and community activities. In terms of your school choices, Kellogg and Wharton can open more doors for you. However, ultimately it is the individual that matters, not the school. The star who goes to Kelley will surpass the lazy student at a top-school. One might get a small headstart, but it will even out quickly. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hi Jeremy,
Good to see you help us all in waging , what I would i call, a really difficult battle. I took my GMAT on 13th December with a score of 660 (49 Quant, 31 Verbal). I am currently working in IBM India as a software engineer and have a net work ex of 3.5 years. I did my mechanical engineering from Delhi college of engineering(Delhi university). Here is how my academic statistics go:
Class Xth board- 90.2% Class XIIth board-80% B.E. (Mechanical)-68%
I want to pursue the 2 year full-time mba program and have shortlisted some universities based on my own assessment, feedback from friends and other fellow mba admission seekers. Here are some of them: 1. Kelley 2. University of Notre Dame(Mendoza) 3. Texas A&M; University 4. University of Minnesota(Carlson) 5. University of Rochester(Simon) 6. University of Georgia(Terry) 7. Arizona state University(Carey) 8. Rice university
As you can see, most of these universities fall in the 25-45 range of rankings (barring Kelley) as per the general surveys. I wanted to know if there are some others(considering my score and my profile) that I can add to this list and also, whether there is a significant disadvantage in pursuing a mba program from lower ranked universities as against pursuing from the Kellogs, the Whartons of the world...
I would really appreciate if you give a feedback on my chances and assist me in selecting the right universities.
Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize but I am just not sure what these schools requirements are. I wish I could offer you advice, but under the circumstances, it probably is not wise for me to do so as I could lead you astray. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hi Jeremy,
I want to do my Full time MBA. I am eyeing NUS or Nanyang and I would like to know what else I can do in building my profile to stand out from other IT competitors.
My Profile : Secured 78 pc in 10th CBSE and 94 pc in 12th stateboard. Aggregate of 73 in Engineering From a reputed college.
Working for the past 2 years in a US Giant corp as a sw engineer. I have won many accolades and recd Certificate of achievements in my work.
Started a German community in my workplace to start teaching Basic german to co workers.
I have also done some technical certs but not sure if they will help me in this case.
I have been playing professional cricket for the past 10 years and have played for first division etc.(Does sports really have an added advantage while applying ???)
I am trained in SIX sigma and will do my Green belt certification pretty soon.
Trained in one foreign language(German) and planning to write a german lit exam(Is foreign language a plus point).
Thank you for your inquiry. With regard to your poor grades, your strong GMAT is a great start. Your CFA level one would be a great complement, because it will show that you have the strength and self-discipline to learn many of the rigorous subjects that MBAs learn, but you would have learned it on your own. As an added note, your profile has a lot of pluses your work experiences and extras are standouts. (Law, advisory board on an NGO, athletics). If a school can get past your grades, they should see a candidate that has a lot of positives. A top-15 school is not unreasonable. Hi Jermey, need your feedback on how to address weak under grad performance my profile Gmat - 730 (Q 47, V 42) 10th 86% 12th 61% (Had accidents in final year of school) Graduate of India's top law School Gpa - 3.1/7 (50%) Worked in the legal dept of a fortune 60s firm in India. Then Senior Analyst in a fortune 30s firm's Analytics division promoted to advisor Working as contracts manager for India Region now for same firm and only 1 step removed from GM - India in reporting hierarchy. total 5.5 years now. Have received awards. promotions from both firms, also headed a major business impact project, presently part of a business project. Extra-curricular Captained the University Basketball, Soccer and Athletics Team., Member Hockey and Volleyball teams. Various sports awards including best athlete. Captain of the corporate soccer team, amateur soccer club, etc. Represented my district for basketball while in school and was on the basketball team and captained the soccer team in school. Certified for paragliding and scuba diving. Trekking, photography and reading are interests. Member of the student representative council, convener of a committee etc, in college Member of the advisory board for an NGO, active in community civil defense initiatives and consumer protection initiatives now. Setting up an outsourcing firm. My greatest weakness seems to be my undergrad gpa and I plan to take an alternative course or a certification before I apply to B-schools to demonstrate academic aptitude. My options seem to be CFA level 1 or PMP in relation to my project or an evening business or quant related course in a local college. Will any of these help me offset my bad grades in college? What would be the best strategy? I have a decent GMAT and have done well at work as well, but I'd like to cover all bases before I apply. I want to get into consulting after B-school. Any feed back will be appreciated.
Thank you for your inquiry. The PHD to MBA transition can be a bit tricky. You will need to persuade the school that you are not a degree collector but that you have the intent to use your MBA to propel your career. I think that you have the experiences to be a great candidate for the Johnson program. I just cant comment on the other programs as I dont know enough about them. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hi Jeremy, I have M.Sc and PhD in Biochemistry from Australian -Tier 1 University with 1.5 years of predoctoral academic research experience and 3.6 years of postdoctoral academic/Industry research experience. Presently, I am working as a Senior Scientist in a Drug Discovery company in Bangalore, India. Prior to this I have worked in academic labs in US and Australia. I am interested in a career transition within life sciences/ bio-pharma industry from research to life sciences management or consulting, or VC. I planning to sit for the GMAT within next 2-3 months and then apply for MBA for next year 2010. During my postdoctoral experience, I have been managing a team of research assistants, carrying out independent projects. I have published 7 peer-reviewed articles in high impact international science journals and more than 10 various conference articles. I have received several scholarships and awards, I am an active member of various scientific professional organizations.
I have done some research about MBA schools providing specialized MBA degree for life scientist. I could locate few business schools: 1. Johnson school- Cornell accelerated MBA for Scientists and Engineers 2. University of Alabama's MBA for scientists (GMAT not required for PhD's) 3. Rady Business School UCSD-started in 2005-(GMAT not required for PhD's) 4. Carey Business School Johans Hopkin- Satrting this year (GMAT not required for PhD's)
-Please suggest me, Is it good to do specialized MBA like these to make a career change within the life sciences industry from research to management? Are these 1 year MBA are as good as two year traditional MBA?
-What about the reputation of above schools? Since UAB's tuition is very low and they don't need GMAT, it looks better to me? but I am not sure about the reputation of this school?
-Can you suggest any other business schools (outside US as well) offering MBA good for life scientist and has high impact ranking? With my kind of profile what GMAT score I should get, if I plan to go for Top 10 schools?
-And last but not least Is it a good idea to do MBA after PhD when I have a secured job?
You feedback would help in deciding my career path. With Regards, Raj
Thank you for your inquiry. There is so much more to your candidacy than your GMAT and we just dont know enough about your work experiences to date. Assuming that you are successful in starting your business and you do get that 750, I think that you should be competitive at all of the programs you listed, but those are big ifs. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hey frnds nice work Well I also have some questions regarding the mba from usa. Well right now I am in my final year at iit kgp in electronics and electrical eng. My gpa is 6.6/10 which is in lower 20% in the class. I plan to do an mba from usa after working 3 years in india. I am planning to start a coaching institute in my hometown where no iit jee coaching is available by date. I hope to earn enough money to do an mba from abroad after 3 years and simultaniously I will be doing some community work by teaching the financially poor students without any fee. I have cleared cfa level 1 exam. and hope to clear rest 2 levels in next 2 years. Though I dont have any clear cut vision for my future career path by now but most probably it will be related to education management or finance..
Suppose I get a gmat score around 750 then which of the following schools can I get in to ? 1. Hbs 2. wharton 3. tuck 4. kellog or ny school in top 10.
My question might look vague but still answering it would be a great help. :)
Thank you for your inquiry. We seem to be missing the story of your professional career. That written, I cant estimate how much financial aid you will receive. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hello Jeremy,
Amar here (an Eager MBA applicant for Jan 2010 at USA)...
Sincere thanks in advance to look in and giving a bit of your valuable time and energy.
Brief Profile -:
Academics - BS (Biotech.) + PGDCA with GPA of 3.7/4.0,
Gmat Score - 680 + toefl - 110 , + 2.5 yrs of core techno-marketing & managerial work ex. + simultaneous venture in local financial trading firm,
Extra-Curriculars - Decent Community Service credits, Event Management (Political & Social), Campaigned with NGOs on several ocassions, participant of debate/speech/Quiz competitions during college & school times and winning few of e'm, Active Member of local youth club, etc.
Ok, now a Question well bound by decent fraction of million $$ boggling a poor kid for a while -:
Q. For which all top notch b- schools (or not much of a high-fliers but providing with rather decent scholarship eventually) can i apply for, with my profile ?
Q. if U may kindly list 'em out along with idea of financial aid scheme and how much the candidate like me can particularly bargain at which domain ??
Q. Fall '09 deadlines are almost gone, so the period i am aiming for my admission process (i.e Jan '10) is alright in a broad sense ???
Thank you for your inquiry. With a three year degree, you will definitely be eligible for the GMAT. You dont need a degree to take the GMAT. However, you may not be eligible for some American colleges. Some schools require a four year degree. You should inquire with each before applying. Dear i'm having graduation in science with three year pattern. Can i still eligible for gmat?
Hey Jeremy..All kudos to u for doing such a great job...
Well i am abhijeet... Im still in the initial phase of building my career..as such i have the luxury of time..
My profile:-
10th- 84.5 % 12Th- 80.5 % graduated last year from Delhi university (B.sc Physical science ) - 50 % ( point of worry )
GMAt- 760 ( took last november )
Work ex- 0 years..
i want to pursue MBA , say after 3 years and i am aiming at Ivy league colleges( strategy n consulting ).basically top 5-10 colleges in U.s.a
My main point of worry is my graduation score.. i know its very low, and above all the Ivy league colleges will not consider my 10th n 12th percentage...however i think i have compensated a bit by scoring well in Gmat.. Just wanted to know ,what role will my graduation percentage play even after scoring well in GMAT? i know that academics n GMAT are not the only criteria the adcoms consider, but even then its important
Now comes my positives points:-
Represented the school in debate competitions, symposium and group discussion. Participated in school's debate, elocutions, sports, song and creative writing competitions. Participated actively in Literacy Mission Campaign. Worked as volunteer for HELP AGE INDIA. Have been the sports champion at the school level. Member of the Tarumitra Organization. Have been the school prefect.
Got a merit certificate from CBSE in class 12th for scoring 95 in english.
At college level , i was actively involved with various social activities..i think the major reason for my low score in graduation is because i used to bunk classes for social activities..and i dont regret it( i dont need to mention dis to ad coms )
leadership qualities :-
Well i'm a part of delhi based youth action group called " Youth 4 justice "
Post -vice president .
1) actively involved in Informing people and students about the RTI's by carrying out rally, protest against reservation in higher education, Sensitizing urban population and youth regarding Farmer Suicides by distributing pamphlets, carrying out candle light vigil along with farmers and youth. Been a part of Satyagraha against the destruction caused by construction of commonwealth site on yamuna bank, under the able leadership of Magsaysay Awardee Shri Rajendra Singh.. it involved more than 450 people at a time..
In all my protests , i worked for the common masses..
2) also sat on indefinite hunger strike - 60 hours(just water, salt n lemon ) against the B.sc programme result..protested against the Delhi univerity ( My own university ).the protest was successful . cuz the university ultimately realized their mistakes and made the required changes. lead around 500 people during this protest..
I have the newspaper clippings and certificates as a matter of proof.
And yes i was also detained several times by police..however no FIR's.
Presently i along with 2 of my friends have started another Ngo..and it aims at providing employment at rural level.. its almost 7 months old , and we have around 300-400 village people( mostly women, and also farmers during their off season ) under our employment scheme..and we do have several other schemes aiming at education n scholarships for the school going kids..
Queries :-
1) Can i show my NGO experience as far as My work-Ex is concerned( i am talking about the experience i have gained after my graduation )
2) i took GMAT last year..And will apply for MBA, say after 3 years..basically looking for a relevant work experience ..Does the Ivy league colleges selects the recent GMAT score..How true is that?I am not planning to take another shot at GMAt ..not cuz im afraid but my work schedule wont allow me to ..
3) any other add on's which u wud like to suggest.. as i said earlier,i have the luxury of time , so i can work on that..
Thank you for your inquiry. Many MBAs are career changers this should not be an issue. You may need to network a little more aggressively or target certain skills for development, but once you are into a program, you should be able to manage the transition. As for family businesses, you will need to show that you were achieving. This will come through in your story your resume and your essays. The sincerity of your stories and your details will enable you to prove your worth. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844
Hi Jeremy. Have a query that has been nagging me for some time now. My work experience is on the lower side (2 years as of today) and I want to switch fields after my MBA (currently in merchandising exports switch to media/FMCG branding). However I am concerned that even if I get into a good MBA program (in Asia/Europe), I will not be able to get a creative job profile in an industry of my choice as recruiters would prefer candidates with more work experience in a related field. I don't want to invest so much time/money in an MBA and end up in an industry/job I have no interest in.This is my biggest fear.
Will I be considered a fresher due to my unrelated work experience? Plus it is in a family business so will this go against me? Am quite worried about this.
Thank you for your inquiry. Having a Masters Degree in Law would certainly be a differentiator. It is not that this is the key to getting in, but it should be a nice story that will help set you apart. Similarly, your NGO story will help you in that it will be another additional dimension another story for you to tell. Sincerely, Jeremy Shinewald MBA Mission www.mbamission.com 646-485-8844

Hi puys, I have a question which may not be related to this thread but please Help me out with this question of mine... Its like, I ve done my B.E in Computer Science n now working in with Microsoft frm past 1 year..Now, I'm Planning to do my M.B.L (Master of Business Law) degree for 2yrs via correspondance n then pursue MBA...I m also working as a part time volunteer in an NGO.. So my Question here is tht, would my doing M.B.L degree be of any help in my MBA career or in getting me through the GD/PI of top B-schools?????? Also, would working with an NGO help me in any case???
Thank you for your inquiry. I will respond to your questions one by one: 1) Can i show my NGO experience as far as My work-Ex is concerned( i am talking about the experience i have gained after my graduation ) I am not entirely sure what you mean here. The schools will a appreciate both work experience and volunteer experience, but you cant really have one as a proxy for the other. Your GMAT score will be valid for five years. It is a great score. If you submit it in three years, you will still be in great shape. 3) any other add on's which u wud like to suggest.. as i said earlier,i have the luxury of time , so i can work on that.. thanks for your reply. presently i am running my own NGO ..It deals with providing employment to the rural people..we train them , so that they understand the intricacies of the work..i am working on a full time basis and not as a volunteer.. infact in the last 7 months, we have employed ore than 300 people on a full time basis.. we also deal with education and scholarships for the school going children. so my question is whether i can show the work involved with my NGO as my work-ex. I
my second question is regarding my undergraduate percentage..will it hamper my chances anymore or my GMAT score will somewhat compensate with my low undergrads score.?
Thanks for your response. I now have a better understanding of your situation. Your commu8nity work is indeed your professional work and it sounds quite impressive. Few can say that they have employed 300 people. This should be the foundation of a great story A strong GMAT score can help establish that you have the abilities to succeed in management study. Still, it cant make up for all GPAs. If your GPA is truly awful, then there is only so much a GMAT can do. If your GPA is poor, 2.5-3.0, sometimes and excellent GMAT can help you recover from these kinds of grades. That written, the rest of your profile would need to be spotless as well. Hi Jeremy, I'm a Indian software engineer working in Europe for an IT product based MNC thats probably one of the best companies in the world in the Telecom billing domain. I have approximately 2 1/2 years of experience now(all of it in the same company and in europe) and took my GMAT last october - 730(Q51,V3:5.5. I did my engineering from a college thats probably in the top 10-15 in India. 10th - 86% 12th - 88% BE - 81% As far as extra-curriculars go, I've taken part in lots of swimming competitions while in school and have won quite a bit. But its all been mostly at the school level. I've participated in other activities too - like drama and cross countries, but no lead performances or tournaments won etc. While in college, i was actively involved with clubs and held the Vice-presidents post in one. Organized quite a few big events ( with varying roles like being incharge of press and media where i had quite a bit of interaction with the media and other key posts). Was the chief editor of a few college magazines. I was part of the placement committee in my final year. So all in all, i think there is something to write.. but i guess not exactly something thats 'eye-catching'. I am an electronics engineer working as a software developer. In the past 2 1/2 years, I've done some varying roles starting with making in-house applications to bring down project costs and then moving onto application design. I've been working for the same client (one of the largest telecommunication companies in the US)for a while now and have had lots of client interaction.I've been in the US for almost half a year where i had extensive interaction with my client, but mostly at a technical level. Now i've moved on to business requirement gatherings and more of a solution architect, all with lots of client interaction. I have managed a promotion and done relatively well. I do lead a group of people from the entire team now, but its more in the role of a technical lead and mentor. I've also give technical assistance to sales presentations too, but again... more on the technical side. I have conducted training sessions in the US for our clients. In the whole process, i do believe i've gained alot of telecom business knowledge. But... i guess domain knowledge is something everybody masters in a while. I think what i may have going my way is my international exposure where i've worked with people from various countries. Ofcourse, i guess i am 'over-representing the over-represented' as you said in a post earlier. But would that mean an IT experience is absolutely useless? Thats about me. About my career goals...well, i'm still in process of becoming clearer on that. I think as a logical career progression.. i would like to go into telecom consulting. But if i'm not that specific, then probably just consulting. Strategy and Consulting would be what i like. I'm planning of applying for the 2010 admission year to the US schools and probably some european ones too. I know i probably don't have a great resume etc, but i'd really appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions as to what i could do from now until october to better my chances of getting into a top 20 B-school ( if at all you think the odds are there. I've noticed that you have been quite honest about your opinion as far as possible colleges may be and thats really helpful). That would probably help me better gauge at the range of colleges i should target. Thank you for your advice and help in this forum! I've found it extremely useful so far. .

the matter of fact is that i cannot change my graduate Gpa. so no point cribbing about it and ruining my life just because i scored poorly in my graduation. so finally i am planning to pursue CFA from CFA Institute, USA .. i think a good GMAT Score along with a good GPA in CFA will somewhat overcome my undergrad performance.
and yes thanks for appreciating for My NGO efforts.

At the risk of seeming lazy, I would suggest that you read the blog posts that follow. It certainly is not too late to get involved and build your profile.
While you are an "overrepresented" client, your experience is definitely not "useless." You just need to think about what is unique within your work experience and you need to try to offer stories outside of work that reveal that you are a different kind of candidate. The answer to your problem lies in two words: "experience" and "creativity."

I've found it extremely useful so far. .
