My negatives are no community work and just nominal sports activities during secondary school. I am trying to shortlist 6 or 7 universties for Fall 2010. Could you please suggest which univs I have a good chance of getting into with scholarship. I am also contemplating an INSEAD or LBS MBA but I prefer a post-MBA career in the the US over a career in UK. Do INSEAD graduates have a good chance of landing a US-located job. I am inclined towards Consulting/General management. Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs.

I have a work ex of about an year now in a leading IT firm. I am interested in applying to Nanyang MBA next year when I would have 2 years of work ex.

My questions are:

A) I do not have much experience in community work though I intend to join an NGO this year. Would this lack of community work ex act as a deterrent?

B) Provided I get a good GMAT score(700+) with some community work ex and the above profile(2 years of work ex), how do you rate my chances at Nanyang. If they are not good, what can I do to improve my candidature at Nanyang. How important are the essays which go with our application. Can they make up for a slightly poor profile or is the balance always in the favour of a good profile. On that note, how would you define a good profile and where would I lie on that spectrum?

C) It is no secret that a major chunk of MBA applicants are from IT. I am one of them. What is the major differentiator that MBA colleges use to seperate out the chosen ones from the crowd when almost all have the same kind of work ex?

Thanking You ,

Hii

I am a 3rd year student from IIT.
My profile is-:

Xth -84%
XIIth- 82%
CGPA- 7.6/10

I am involved in various extracurricular activities like choreography, dramatics(have won medals in both in various events), organizing member of a fest & in various technological events.

As community service I have been a member of NSS for 1 year. I have also been part of rural development centre for a semester where I,along with my team was responsible for educating the local farmers about different technology available and about vocational courses for women.

I aim to pursue a MBA from one of the top B schools.

My Queries are -:

a)I have an option of making my bachelor degree to a dual (Bachelor & master) which require me to stay for one more year after completing normal 4 year bachelor program. Now I am confused whether I should grab this chance and try improving my grades n then go for job or complete my bachelors and go for a job .( which may not be of my choice owing to recession) giving me a 1 year experience in that time.

b)Looking at my profile, I will be glad if you can inform me about the path I should follow if I want to do MBA right after my education in IIT( relating with the ans to part a).

If you suggest I should go for job-ex then please give me appropriate directions for that.

c) Also please mention if any kind of courses which I can take up & that should give me a advantage. I have taken some some basic economics and operations research course till now. I plan to take some in IPR.
d) I am from the field of biotechnology. I have heard of some programs like MBA in biotech. Please give me more details of this course. I would also appreciate any suggestions to increase my chances in this area.

Any other additional suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Just try avoiding "Trinity College Dublin" for MBA, unless you really plan to start your own company after completing your MBA education.

Hi Jeremy,
Have read quite a few of your posts in the forum and they have undoubtedly been enlightening.

My profile:

X - 77%
XII - 72%
B.Tech in Comp Sc & Engg - 8.3 CGPI (KIIT, Bhubaneswar)

I have been President of Interact Club (it's a part of Rotary International) during my school day.
Have organized various events during my school and college days.
Right from my school days i have been involved in Community Work (collection of funds for a Flood Relief, organized and managed funds for the relief operation during the super cyclone, even when Tsunami had hit India was an active volunteer)
As a host I have had the privilege of sharing same stage with quite a lot of personalities.
Was one of the organizer of my college Cultural fest.
I have been student editor of my hostel and college magazine.

I am currently working in an Indian IT company and my work is pretty technical (it involves developing Applications for Mobiles, i also have a bit of experience in driver development). But all in all it is only and only technical.
This June I would be completing my first year of my corporate life.

I am interested in Nanyang, LSB, ISB, Oxford, NUS, UCLA
I would be applying to these schools for 2011-12 session so that gives me about 1.5 yrs from now.
Assuming i am able to get a decent GMAT score(700+), what else should i add to my profile so as to enhance my candidature.

Thanking you.

Hi Jeremy,

I am a NON-IT MBA aspirant from India.

I plan to apply to Wharton, Colombia, NYU Stern, Duke, Emroy for an MBA in Finance starting in 2010. I want to continue with/get into equity research / investment managemet after an MBA

My key concerns: are these the right schools based on my profile? What are some of the best schools for investment management? Should I hedge my risk by adding a few schools which are further down in rank order?

Professional experience: A senior associate, with 4 years of diverse work ex (in June 09) in research; spanning finance, economics, and management strategy. Earned one promotion moving between jobs.

Currently (9 mnths), work with UBS (ISC) in equity research (strategy) in an offshore environment. Previously(1.5yrs), worked with Deloitte Research (economics/management strategy research /thought leadership). Was the youngest "kid" ! at 25 in this c20 member elite research team worldwide. First job (1.5yrs), worked as economist with Watson Wyatt.

Leadership experience by way of participating in an internal consultants program to implement "top 10" ideas to improve research output at Deloitte.

Experience of setting up / managing operations of my international, though small, family business in tourism while in college.

Academics:

M.A. Economics, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University - arguably the best school to study economics in India (51%, Second Division)
B.A. (H), Economics, Delhi University - Hans Raj college (61%, First Division). Placed in top 10% of the graduating class.

CFA Level 1 Candidate, Dec 2009.

GMAT: Sch for May 2009

Extra cirriculars / Community:
- While in college, pariticpated/organised university level paper presentations in economics at College fests. (saving you the details)

- Actively participate in coporate social responsibility events.

- Part of committee to organise employee networking events.

Please appreciate that I faced challenging financial/family sitution during my college years and had to devote a lot of time to run my family business. Hence, my extra cirruculars are not spectacular. However, I am well travelled for my age (private / leisure trips) having visited Austria, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Japan (Tokyo), Singapore, Australia & New Zealand.

Can this be a 'wow' factor?
- Have self learnt finance/financial economics out of own interest over 3 years - something have truly been passionate about and want to demostrate by doing a CFA. (its very hard to be accepted into investment research without a formal finance qualification in India.)

I discovered my interest in finance during first job and have been working towards building a profile to be successful in this industry; but need an MBA to find roles that truly use my skills.

How would you place my chances and what could I do to strenghthen my application.

Thanks and regards,
K

Hi Deepthi,

University of Toronto has an excellent MS Finance program.

Cheers,
K

hi puys,
i need your help!plz plz plz help.......
I'm completing my BE in mechanical engg from Delhi College of engg this may, with nearly 60% in aggregate( though dce doesnt give cgpa, acc to my homework it wud convert roughly to 7.5).10th-79%,12th- 79%
this is my profile:some projects, fair eca..
Here is some net info: Ankur Sharma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I cleared fms full time this year with 99.6 percentile.I have a job with EValueserve. After one year of work-ex, i'll give gmat and when i'll have two years of work-ex,I want to go for wharton. I expect a score of 730-740(Touchwood- I'm working hard)......Here's the link to my own company: Phoenix Snider - Powered by CO.CC
i have also joined Udayan NGO as they appreciate it at wharton.
Now,here are my doubts:
1.With the above mentioned profile, what are my chances at wharton? Can I expect some chances after 2 years of work-ex?I will be working for EVS as well as my company.
2.What should i do further to get in?
3.Does wharton give 100% loan without collateral?
I'm doing a Research on Wharton before I put the foot on the preparation throttle....
If there is something valuable that u can tell me further,it wud help me very much.

Hi Saurabh,

Thanks for your inquiry. I apologize, but we specialize in the top 15 U.S. programs as well as the top European programs, so I cannot provide advice on the schools that you have listed (outside of Duke). With that said, I will focus on the information that you have provided regarding the strength of your candidacy which can be relevant for Duke.

Based on what you've written, it sounds like you have strong technical skills. However, you will need to highlight leadership in your application. Regarding your role at Accenture, have you had international work experience? Have you had any early promotions or been involved in special projects that reflect your leadership skills and potential? If so, these are the key things you should focus on as you reflect on the story you want to convey to the admissions committee.

Your grades are fine but your GMAT score of 630 is in the danger zone. Are you considering retaking the exam? What is the breakdown of your math/verbal scores and percentiles? You might consider taking the exam again to show that you can handle the rigor of business school.

Sincerely,

Thanks for your inquiry. I apologize, but we specialize in the top 15 U.S. programs as well as the top European programs, so I can't provide advice on the schools that you have listed. However, I will focus on the information that you have provided regarding the strength of your candidacy, which can be relevant for business school in general.

Based on the information provided, I notice that you are not in the IT industry. However, what exactly are your duties as a Risk Consultant at KPMG? How does it relate to your post-MBA goals?

Keep in mind that business schools don't always focus on the "quantity" of work experience, but more on the "quality" of work experience. Even though you would have only 36 months of experience by the time you start an MBA program, if you have made a significant impact in your prior and current role, you can consider applying for Fall 2010 admission. Otherwise, you might not have the breadth of stories you need to convince the admissions committee of your candidacy.

Regarding your entrepreneurial venture, even if the company hasn't picked up well, do you have any interesting experiences related to building relationships with partners, marketing your company, overcoming setbacks, negotiating business deals, etc? Remember, business schools are seeking students that can leverage their experiences to contribute to the class discussions, so reflect on your experiences and determine whether or not you bring something significant to the table. That should help you make a decision on whether now is the best time to proceed.

Thanks for your inquiry. Clearly with your 770 GMAT score and 91.33% overall score, your intellectual capabilities will not be questioned. In general, candidates are sometimes allowed one weakness, so what you lack in community experience, you will need to make up in professional and personal stories that highlight your strengths. These stories would need to wow the admissions committees to help you stand out amongst an overrepresented group. As for which schools to target, you will need to first establish the criteria that is important to you and then decide whether the schools meet those criteria, i.e. size, location, curriculum, specialties, etc.
Based on the information you provided, you might consider targeting schools like Tuck, Yale, Ross, Darden, Duke, and Cornell.

Regarding your question about a U.S. vs. European MBA, you will need to consider whether the companies you are interested in actively recruit at your target schools. Most of this information can be found on each schools websites. In the current economic environment, student loans and visa sponsorship are becoming more difficult, so these are additional factors that must be considered. Given your work experience in the U.S. with INFOSYS, you might be able to leverage that to pursue consulting/general management post-MBA roles in the U.S.

Hi Nisheeth,

Thanks for your inquiry. I apologize, but we specialize in the top 15 U.S. programs as well as the top European programs, so I cant provide advice on the school that you have listed.

Regarding questions A and C, candidates are sometimes allowed one weakness, so provided that every other aspect of your application is strong (work experience, grades, etc), you will need to focus on the leadership that youve displayed in your personal and professional life to wow the admissions committee since you have limited work experience. Focus on whats unique in your situation, i.e. special projects, early promotions, overcoming adversity, etc. Use your application to tell a story that only you can tell in order to put your best foot forward. You mentioned that you plan to join an NGO, however dont just join in order to check the box. You want to join an organization that is related to your interests and passions, and one where you can take a leadership role or make an impact.

Best of luck with the application process.

Thanks for your inquiry. It is difficult to provide advice on what path you should take. It really depends on what you've achieved thus far from a leadership perspective and what your post-MBA goals are. You have done well academically, however, business school admission is based on more than just your academic achievements. You have to also prove that you have quality work experience, even if it is limited. If you do not have relevant leadership and professional experiences that will allow you to contribute something to your classmate's learning experience, you might not have much to write about in your essays to prove that you should be admitted. So reflect on your experiences and determine whether or not you believe you bring something significant to the table. That should help you make a decision on whether now is the best time to seek your MBA.

Thanks for your inquiry and thanks for reading our posts! I apologize, but we specialize in the top 15 U.S. programs as well as the top European programs, so I can only provide advice on those specific programs.

Your grades are strong and if you achieve at least an 80th percentile on both the Quant and Verbal sections of the GMAT, the score should be safe, but it certainly does not guarantee admission. You were quite involved in college, however, in your application, make sure you detail your impact and leadership.

You mentioned that your work experience is very technical. Have you played a key leadership role in your projects? Have you spearheaded new projects based on your innovative ideas? Have you been appointed to special projects in a leadership capacity? Or have you earned an early promotion? These are the types of things that can help your leadership experience stand out despite the technical nature of your job. Business school admission is based on more than just your academic achievements and technical prowess. If you do not have relevant leadership and professional experiences that will allow you to contribute something to your classmate's learning experience, you might find it difficult to write compelling essays to prove that you should be admitted.

The good news is that you are starting the process very early given that you plan to apply for 2011-2012. You can consider taking more initiative in your job or finding opportunities to be more involved in the business aspect of your organization. this is my profile:some projects, fair eca..

Thanks for your inquiry. Your work experience with UBS should help you stand out from the typical Indian IT applicant. Further, your role at Deloitte is a bit atypical and can be a plus if you had strong leadership experiences. Your achievement of graduating in the top 10% of your class and studying at the top Economics university underscores your academic capabilities, but the 51% in your Masters program is not very strong. However, if you complete the CFA, that should help bolster your profile. Your experience running the family business during college while still excelling academically should be a strong point as well.

I noticed that you changed jobs 3 times in 4 years, which can be a red flag, so you need to make sure the admissions committee understands the reasoning behind these changes. In short, it will be up to you to overwhelm the AdCom with your personal story. I think that Wharton might be a reach for you, but you should have a shot at the 5-15 range of U.S. schools. You can also consider programs such as Cornell and Tuck for their resources related to Finance and Investment Management.

Best of luck with the application process!

Thanks and regards,
K

Thank you for your inquiry. Succeeding in gaining admission to Wharton will be based on more than just your years of work experience and academic achievements. Success will depend on the quality of your work experience and the evidence you provide through your essays to highlight your leadership capacity/potential. I am familiar with Evaluserve. Can you share more about your specific role/experiences? Are you involved in extra-curricular activities outside of work? These are the points that will help me address your questions. Your entrepreneurial achievement can be another avenue you can explore to differentiate yourself. I cannot answer your specific question regarding whether Wharton will offer financing by the time you apply, however, they are currently offering a loan for international students that does not require a co-signer. You can read more about that on the Wharton website.
