Books for CAT preparation

If anybody is concerned about GRAMMAR in VA,

"Better English" by Norman Lewis fits the bill perfectly.

Cost: around 100 Rs. , available in all leading bookstores

Why I recommend it-
1. No regular theory
2. Concentrates on most frequent usage errors, the kind of thing CAT tests u on.
3. Easy to read, very simple to understand
4. Lots of exercises!

With increasing ambiguity in VA , Grammar looks the lesser ambiguious of all parts*

*in my personal opinion

thank you guys.. pg rocks

if any one can provide with sites providing ebooks for CAT prep do reply..

Hi ppls,
Can anyone tell me the best DI book for CAT.
PL do rply

Hey,

Somehow I feel that the DI from the various question papers or mock cats conducted by various institutes specially TIME are the best sources for preparation as they contain all possible sorts of test cases and provides a very good exposure. I feel getting a grab of a lot of them will definitely help and I feel Arun Sharma can also be a good source but then these books are more mechanical and requires more speed that strategies which the TIME papers demands. Rest it all depends on hows everything is going to happen on D day. Enjoy and share lots and lots of papers in PG. ๐Ÿ˜‰

hey thx buddy....got ur point

Well said. I only did DI from the aimcats and managed to be in the top .25% in CAT 07. Actually the DI exercises are very basic in the books provided by coaching insti's. It is better to deal with tough ones, so work with mock cats.

is it really necessary to complete ALL these books??if not, which one or two books should we depend on???

It depends on your level of comfort with the area. Remember there is no "syllabus" for CAT. Quite a few people here at IIM C do not have read any of the above books (including myself). So, it may not be "necessary", but it may help you improve.

My quant preparation was based on TIME and their Mockcats only. Also, with fewer days left for CAT, dont waste your time by trying to read 4 books which may be redundant. Its time to work on specific topics rather than "quants" as a whole.

Hi,
Actually the level of DI/LR/DS asked in CAT is much higher/different than what is given in different books available in market for the same.(as far as i know)
What i have found is that the DI questions asked in AIMCAT/MOCKCAT/SIMCATS are of same or of higher level than of CAT. So try to solve di/lr part of as much aimcat/moccat/simcats as possible. either borrow or get xeroxed of othet institutes's paper and solve them at home.
after going through every post on this thread,
for QA, i think 4 books have been mainly suggested:
1. arun sharma
2. trishna's QA
3. nishit k sinha
4. think without ink

is it really necessary to complete ALL these books??if not, which one or two books should we depend on???
i have seen the book arun sharma. i think the problem with the book is it has got quite a few wrong answers n also no explanations!!!! so sometimes it becomes irritating.

it will be totally unnecessary to go through all the four books.i would suggest you to first be clear why do you want to solve a quant book.
one reason may be that your basic is not clear in some chapters , you do not know basic formulas etc.
second reason may be that your basics are clear, but you are not able to solve slightly tougher question.
third reason may be that, because of lack of practice, your speed (of thinking the approach, calculations etc ) is slow, so you need solve lots of quality questions to improve your speed.
for all the three purpose trishna's quanta book is best.see my earlier post on previous page. (i am talking like a sales agent for the book, but can not help.i am solving the book currently and found this very useful.)

thanks 4 postin about WORLD IS FLAT .....
plz post more of such novels for rc. i think it'll be better to read tested novel rathe than randon ones.:new_ukliam2:

RC Preparation:

1. Read books which require more "thinking" to be done. It is a very subjective thing. I used to read a lot of fiction. But to do better in RC, i thought about reading books that I had found a little more demanding.

( I felt reading Salman Rushdie first time was demanding. But once i read 50 - 60 pages, I got used to it. This is a very subjective opinion. Another personal thing is, I felt "fountainhead" to be that way and never read beyond 3 pages. It depends on a person's taste. I'm a big Rushdie fan now! )

2. Even those who dont read anything other than plain fictional novels (like sidney sheldon) the takeaway should be better reading speed. But to improve understanding and answer "inference" question, its time to do some serious reading.

Personally I have an advantage of reading in a variety of subjects, not just restricting myself to fiction. But I hated "philosophy" books. So, read as per your taste. But a true fact: Reading philosophy books may give u an edge in RC, but its no point in forcing yourself to read it.

3. Books like "world is flat" are good because they can help you with GD /PI preps also. But dont just stick to that theme of reading.

General Note:

The objective now should be to know how good you are at reading and to estimate how much better you can get before Nov 18 and do everything possible to achieve it. Remember to fix "achievable" goals and "achieve" them. Its better than having "sky-high" goals and giving up "mid-way".

Its true for all aspects of preparation, not jus reading.

I was never the best, but I realized how much scope of improvement was there, I worked and I achieved. Anybody reading this post can do that!

P.S: Good reading habit helps you more in MBA rather than just CAT.

Forgive me for my wandering thoughts apart from books to be posted here. I dont follow any other thread due to time constraints.

Hmm... It shows how much exactly I'm connected to the external world!

What to do, You'll realize it when u land up here next year. (Now, take this as a wish!) "Time" is at such a high premium

I recently bought Trishna for Quant. On the face value, it looks pretty good. However, I'd like to ask a few users of the book one question. There is a diagnostic test at the beginning of the book on whose results they predict your standing in the actual CAT. Is it anywhere close to reality or is it just a farce? Obviously, CAT scores cannot be predicted but still whatever the different authors of the book predict in the analysis of that test seems a little ambiguous to me. Can anyone clear this doubt of mine?

Hi there, sorry for deviating but am nt able to get Trishna's quantative aptitude anywhere. As u hv recently bought the book, can u guide me as to from where cn i get the book?
