Books for CAT preparation

Can anybody tell me how is the Quant book by Abhijit Guha?? Is it any good if you want concepts & practice at the same time or is it only good for practice???

I guess loads f formulaes doesnt help anyone in realtime scenario

Hi I have been a guha fan u can definately refer that book
ONLY for basics
its very good :)

Ill share some tips nad tricks in the coming days do check this space
See these tricks are gona be weird
but i can assure u i scored very well in maths using them
so u can use them if u feel like

Eg Geometry

PLEASE TRY IT FIRST ... i scored a 97 % in maths using this ...

Rather than using formulas try judging the answer on the basis of given diagram
cos if u apply formulas out there ur wasting ur time ..... ull never complete the paper
take my wrd ....
Now,
9 out of 10 diagrams will be drawn to scale
(so pick up any maths sum ... frm any paper )

Now 2 sides will be given and say find an angle or 3 side

BY PURELY visualizing the options(answers) ull realize that 3 are eliminated out of 5
Sounds funny
do 1 thing try it with any sum
so u know such methods help

they r faster n better

Quant book By Abhijit Guha is the best book if u want to grasp the basics...there are sum tips too...and many conceptual questions...if you are able to do all of them...tht means u hv understood the basics...then u can try other book like Arun Sharma...or whatever the materials provided by the Time...

I wud not tell u all to buy the book of TYRA....there are only formulas for particular type of questions...they are applicable for those kinds of ques....but there u wud be able to find a lot of stuff regarding vedic maths...addiction...subt..multi...finding squares...wich wud help u to arrive at ur answer as quick as possible..

Don`t know about THINK WITHOUT INK

regarding DI...i wud like to tell tht just read the material provided by the coaching centres..and solve the question papers...MOCK CAT exams...tht`s enough

In cat u will come across many sums like

23^4 + 52 ^ 7 + 22^6

how do u solve them

when i saw them for the first time i left them

we have a method of indices which can be used

check this space

1^1 = 1
1^2 = 1
1^3 = 1

now

2^1= 2
2^2= 4
2^3= 8
2^4= 1 6
2^5= 3 2
2^6= 6 4
2^7= 12 8
2^8= 15 6

do u observe the last numbers repeat at intervals of 4

its the same for all numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

so on a rough paper do it for all numbers

u will notice in cyclyes of four
the last number repeats

when u are trying to solve the sum


in 52^7

u seein the option
the option where last number ends with 8 is it
there be only 1 answer sarsfying this condition



52 ^ 7 + 22^6

here

2^7 + 2^6 karo

8+4=12

so the number ending with (from options) 2 is your answer

My gauruntee there willbe only 1 such option

try it with all numbers in cycles of 4

adn so on here the cycle repeated is

in cycles of 4

NOw,
1000 in cycles of fourth is the 4th number while dividing
as in
cycle is while div by 4

it completely divides
no remainder,
so the answer of ur query will end with 1( our cycle of 7 was 7931)

remember there will be only 1 slution ending with 1 t

trust me its tried and tested !!!!!

7^7^7^7........ 1000 times is different from 7^1000...anurodh has answered the latter one.
for the former...the following methd should be adopted:

since the cycle of last digits for 7 is 4...we need to find out the remainder when 7^7^7...99times is divided by 4...so tht the complete thing can be written as 7^(4k+x).
now...(7^7^7...99times) /4 means (-1)^7^7...98times/4...since 7^7^7..98times is always an odd number..hence remainder is 3.

hence we have 7^(4k+3), hence the ans is 3.

so it should be 7^3

anyone has some idea which is a good book.i have heard of IMS book but it contains only previous 5 years papers.

we c that the DI section of the cat paper is tilting more towards the logical reasoning and puzzles side than the actual data interpretation.
so what are the books available in the market that give us a gud practice of the reasoning skills before takin the cat exam

For TWI and word power made easy, it can be easily said that they are very good in subjects they deal with, worth it to read them atleast once.
