CAT 2017 Verbal Ability Preparation - PaGaLGuY

How to check for the tone, central idea and primary purpose of a passage?

Children from religious families are less kind and more punitive than those from non-religious households, according to a new study. Academics from seven universities across the world studied Christian, Muslim and non-religious children to test the relationship between religion and morality. They found that religious belief is a negative influence on children's altruism. The findings "robustly demonstrate that children from households identifying as either of the two major world religions (Christianity and Islam) were less altruistic than children from non-religious households". Older children, usually those with a longer exposure to religion, "exhibit[ed] the greatest negative relations". At the same time, the report said that religious parents were more likely than others to consider their children to be "more empathetic and more sensitive to the plight of others".

1. Children from religious families are more inclined to inflicting punishment for activities they consider amoral.
2. Children from religious families, contrary to the expectations of their parents, are intolerant and unkind.
3. Religious belief, contrary to the expectations of parents , appears to have negative influence on the children's altruism.
4. Religious families appear to have negative influence on children's altruism and judgments of others' actions even as parents see them as 'more empathetic'.

Biotechnology can sometimes resemble that rather older interaction with nature - gardening. It relies quite heavily on pruning and grafting. Gene-by-gene biotechnology constantly comes up against the problem that living organisms like to plough their own furrow, regardless of what their human "masters" might desire. The pruning part of biotechnology involves eliminating proclivities that might be useful to a wild organism, but drain its energy and metabolic effort away from the task at hand. __________________________________

1)

The pruning part seems to be going with the grain of nature, as wise gardeners do.

2)

A rational act of pruning does a much more thorough job than has been previously possible of grafting.

3)

However, evolution by pruning is likely to prove almost as wasteful as the kind by natural selection.

4)

The grafting part is adding new characteristics from elsewhere to the well-trained root stock.

Each of the following questions has a paragraph from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way.

When the word water appears in print these days, crisis is rarely far behind. Water, it is said, is the new oil: a resource long squandered, now growing expensive and soon to be overwhelmed by insatiable demand. Aquifers are falling, glaciers vanishing, reservoirs drying up and rivers no longer flowing to the sea. Climate change threatens to make the problems worse. ___________________________

1)

Bringing supply and demand into equilibrium will be easy, and political disputes may increase in number and intensify in their capacity to cause trouble.

2)

Everyone must use less water if famine, pestilence and mass migration are not to sweep the globe.

3)

Water is not the new oil.

4)

Water is indeed scarce in many places, and will grow scarcer.
