Feed Back Time:

it is 10 august so more 3 months exactly left.

I have completed so far account 1 & 2 numericals (Paper 2 3 chapters pending :()

I have finished stats 1 , now working stats 2 .

Should finish both along with work Book by this weekend else it will be a race against time.

Difficulties :
Accounts 2 - Valuation of G/W this is ctually easy but wb has abt 63 sums all uniques from one another.Share is easy . Dont waste time on p & L bcos u also have it in paper1

Stats1- Easy Dont waste time saw july paper easy

Stats2 - I have so far worked the TB alone , i think it is pretty tough
It is abt relating quants to investment.TIME CONSUIMG ......

Babu told that Fm is tough so u need a month for complete prepartion
So that makes it 17 august & later eco and accounts paper2

So it is time for struggle.

Level 1 guys feedback plz

Ara Babu Quants 2 is difficult yaar.

Hey shankar,

You are doing well 😃 . Goodwill chapter have unique questions but do them. They give you one/two mark question where only one adjustment is asked. But questions from goodwill be average type focussing on core concpet.

FM as a subject is new brimming with all new concepts, theories and questions. This subject also forms base for L 2. i am sure you will be able to handle that one as you are allocating one full month for it.

The first three chapters in quant 2 covers almost whole course ! If you add index numbers in it then you are through with 90% of the course. Try to break the first 3 lengthy chapters in parts and master one part every day.

Cheers,
well..
people are very optimistic about CFA. but i personally feel it lacks practical approach which is a must & its there in MBA. no doubt CFA has got great subjects to study & learn but what about practical approach.
No college, no coaching,.. no sessions..
don't you think its gonna be a problem.. further the university doesn't offer any placement support.

anyone who is doing CFA or looking to do CFA should click on the link below to join the only mailing group for CFAs with so many members.

I know we all miss regular MBA finance activities like classroom fun, projects, internship etc. Getting a job with CFA ICFAI is very much possible provided three things are in hand:
1) Soft Skills
2) Physically Present in delhi, mumbai, bangalore, chennai and hyderabad.
3) Clearity of basics.
Internship have started from this year with cygnus business consulting and research. As it has started this year only effective April 2006 , the process will be refined and new things will be added in the coming years. Within 5 years, i am sure ICFAI will be able to conceptualise internship structure integrated with CFA programme.
Cheers,

Hello All,

Sumit, you are correct when u say that there is a lack of internships and practical training when it comes to CFA. Having done both MBA and CFA, I feel that the basic difference is in the subject and required curriculum for the same. As Babu has already said, most professional courses across the world are distance learning be it CFA (AIMR) or CIIA. The course coverage of and MBA (Fin) and professional courses is very different, with wider coverage and theoretical inputs required for the latter. While doing pursuing the course its thus very important to build a sound conceptual base which can be applied later!!

ATTN MUMBAIKERS: I require some information on coaching classes (private coaching classes, tutors) for CFA in Mumbai, besides the ones conducted by ICFAI. This is a little urgent. Pls Help.

Sunny, Give me 2-3 days. My friend took a private coaching in mumbai for L 2. I will contact him and lets hope he can provide some good lead !

Cheers,
Thanks Akhil, will look forward to your feedback!!l:)
you can try mr. darshan in mumbai. his email address is [email protected]
i don't know if he will be happy if i place his no. on internet.. so i am leaving only his email add.
regarding distance learning in major courses... well we are not concerned here with what others have. my opinion is things will be better if we will have an internship program

ICFAI training classes are very good. But ICFAI gives training for L 1 only. So most of the guys look for L 2 and L 3 private tutions.

Score high !:)

Tumtum, can i ask you one thing?

How did you motivate yourself every day to study? Being a self study professional course, it needs lot of self discipline. In MBA finance one is forced to study but here in CFA procastination is common.

Any tips for self motivation ? Do narrate us your experience when you were doing CFA.

Thanks in advance for career guidance.:)

Frankly speaking, it wasnt easy for me. The only thing in my favour was that I wasnt working at all (studying full-time) and plus the fact that I was pursuing my M.Com (Business Economics) alongside gave me tension and enough motivation fuel (pushed by fear of failure) to keep my engines running and keep working hard.

I do remember very distinctly, the years 2001-2004 were characterized by long hours of tuition, college and extra group study of periodicals and magazines. watching CNBC, and other biz-channels. I devised a time schedule and stuck to it religiously for 3 years. I would get up at 4am and start studyingcontinue till 9 am. Have bfast and go for classes. come back at 3pm. Take half hour off and then begin studying and go on till 10pm in the night. Bas then lights off till 4 am. Although this lead to very little sleep and a lot of mental exhaustion, it worked well for me.

I had my dismal performance in graduation at the back of my mind and this really fuelled my desire to prove myself. Actually I was so much into thinking of completing both courses with good grades that I dont know where those years went!! I cut off from my friends, relatives; forgot festivals didnt go for movies AT ALLprobably punished myself (thats what I think now). I would now term it as a bit of extremism and an obsession but the fact was that I did this. Probably I m that way.

I also remember that many times when I studied during the day, there would be some concept, which I couldnt grasp at the first try. I actually used to get dreams at night that I am writing the paper and that concept is being asked and I am not able to answer it and that I am gonna flunkand I used to wake up with a shock, get up- drink some water, turn the lights on, take out my books and start studying from that minute in the dead of night to clear the concept and continue with it till it was slam-bang clear in my mindjust because of the fear of failure. Like Arjun could see only the eyes of the bird, I was desperate to prove myself academically. bas dimag mein kuch aur aata hi nahi thaa. I laugh at myself now but at that time it was tough and my motivation worked for me.

For all of you who are pursuing it, I dont think that all this is necessary but yes, motivation takes one a long way and it is certainly the biggest lesson the CFA teaches you apart from fundas of finance. My advice. dont take failure to heart. With every failure, you should become stronger and more resolute. I myself flunked throughout level 2 and felt low for some days after failing just because I didnt make up the aggregate of 220. I remember, once I got 216 (4 marks short of aggregate 55%), once 207, once 204 and once 218 (just 2 marks short!!) and had to repeat the groups but with every failure, I felt even more charged became more aggressive- resolute and fearless, which helped me achieve my goal.

Once again, sorry to all those who felt bored in this long post, I was just sharing my experience since Babu asked me to. Got a bit nostalgic.

Tumtum

Thanks a lot Tumtum for inspiring post. The next 2 -3 years will be tough as there will be many ups and down during CFA preparation.

I am sure your passion for perfection helped you to get the current prestigious job which only TOP MBA's can dream of.

My experience shows one needs to force himself to study which translates to 'real effort'. Best thing is 3 months examination system which keeps one on track.

oopss.. 218, 216, 207, 204...Thats too close !! Brutual ICFAI :wow:

Cheers,

Hi tumtum n all those on this thread..
I m also pursuing Cfa n been keeping an eye on this thread for quite sometime... got to post sumthing today only...
I hav done my B.com (hons) n currently giving epsillon
Well... i hav only given one group of L-II, so not much experienced... but i'd like to say i really dint go mad at studying... i dint took tuitions (infact nvr evr till yet).... taught myself all the concepts n njoyed the subjects... the challenge of the subjects was enuf to keep me motivated... but nvr once could i get up at 4 to study...:wow:..
i dont really think Cfa is any course like preparing for IIT JEE... where the kids just lock thm in their study rooms for 2 yrs n forget all abt the world... i believe Cfa is a more practical course...where the more u r in the field... the better u r at understanding... this is a post graduate course... so the methodology to study is also different... u hav to approach the subjects as if u r solving a real life problem... n those who love challenges... there is nothing stopping thm...
tumtum, with all due regards... u must hav really worked hard... but reading ur post gave me goose bumps... there is a diff whn u study for the fear of failure n whn u study taking it as a challenge..!!!
To all those who r pursuing Cfa, my suggestion is create a passion for ur subjects... imagine u hav been given a case study n the future of organisation is on ur shoulders... n one mistake could be disastrous... the challenge is to succeed ... n if u hav this notion there is nothing stopping u... it would be a self motivation... n along with it ull enjoy ur yrs while learning newer concepts.
Cheers!!!

Completely agree with you my friend. However, whether one enjoys or not depends on his past experriences too and I have never got anything easy in my life till now. So the fear of failure was the main catalyst and it made me go all out nto finish the course.

Another thing....whether you study for enjoyment or for getting placed or for whatever objective, you have to understand the concepts!! The fact that I was pursuing another masters degree alongside was also at the back of my mind.

I do acknowledge that it is not like IIT JEE exams but then I have seen people clearing IIT JEE exams with minimal preparation too and make it look like a mere formality. The bottom line is that people work in 2 ways...smart work and hard work. I am more of a latter category and I was just sharing my experience.
