# TCA Raghavan, currently India's top envoy in Singapore, has been appointed as the new High Commissioner in Islamabad. He, a 1982-batch IFS officer, has earlier served as Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad 10 years ago. He will replace current envoy Sharat Sabharwal. Vijay Thakur Singh has been appointed as India's new envoy in Singapore. He will replace TCA Raghavan.


# Indian government has hiked the import duty on Gold and platinum by 2% to 8% yesterday in order to curb rising current account deficit. This is the second hike in the duty in six months as gold imports touched an alarming 162 tonnes in May. Higher gold and platinum imports have been the key reason for the widening current account deficit which worsened India's macro-economic condition severely.

# 67 countries in UN General Assembly, which make it a huge majority, voted in favour of the landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). This treaty intends to regulate the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. The treaty covers battle tanks, armoured combat vehicles, large-calibre artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers, and small arms and light weapons.


# Japan has unveiled its new bullet train, designed to travel at speeds of up to 500 kmph. The train has undergone its first test on tracks earlier this week. The 5-car train (L0 model),towed by a locomotive, ran on the track slowly to check whether the train bottom has proper clearance from devices on the ground. Commercial runs of this train are scheduled to start between Tokyo and Nagoya in 2027.
