Anyways here goes...a short intro about me and my aspirations and how the whole story of distance education falls into perspective..

I work with a company in the ITES sector. Have done my hotel management from IHM' Blore...we fall directly under the Ministry of Tourism and are not affiliated to any University....(we studied for 3 yrs like any other degree) ...thus we did not get a degree, but got a diploma instead (for the people from around Delhi, PUSA will ring a bell :)).
Well IGNOU came out with a bridge course (1.5yrs)...which I just completed this June 6th. Think I will clear that exam.....(am begging God on bended knee 😉 )...anyways with plans of my degree in place....I have been dreaming of that elusive MBA ........intend to give the GMAT by Mid Sept. Have been scouring the net for resources when I came across Pagalguy ..... tis gr8 to have forums like this :)
Anyways...wanted to ask some of the experienced members of this forum,....if there are any problems with having a Degree from IGNOU and wanting to do an MBA from ISB or some of the b-schools abroad. I am aware that some schools ask for work-ex after the degree...wonder how that would affect my case? Already have a consolidated work-ex of 5+ yrs (with HM diploma).
Also wanted to know from all of you, the respect that distance learning holds/ commands in the corporate world.

I think that u shud qualify to apply for any MBA college.......That shud not be an isssue...........

The other part.........How does the MBA by distance learning stack in the eyes of the corp world.........well, it may sound a lil harsh but distance learning does not really hold much of a value in the corp world........Any person either does it to gain some knowledge or to show it to his/her employee that the prson has another degree against their name.

Hi I am Kartik Patel.
I m in the final year of BA Economics from IGNOU.
I have worked alongwith my graduation and having 3.5 years' work ex including one year at TATA Teleservices where my juni was an MBA !!!
And they recruited me when I was in Second Year but ofcourse they were already aware of my performance as I was working with a Franchise earlier.
So my personal experience says that Distance education's degree doesn't matter if u can prove urself. But Yes, that's for Graduation only so no way I wanna say that distance MBA equals to a fulltime MBA.
Add to that now I m joining IMDR for PGDM and I belive that fulltime PGDM plus 3.5 year's work ex would be good enough to put me ahead of any freash full time BA+PGDM student.
But as U r talking about GMAT, my knowledge is ZERO in that field.

Thanks Abhi and Kartik for your responses. I am heartened by the fact that both of you feel that my IGNOU degree would not be a problem while applying to B Schools abroad...but Kartik like you very correctly said

This I think, I need to check individually with each school that I apply to...my work-ex of 5+ yrs is not without its positives 😃 as almost all my peers are MBA's. I also think one's career progression makes a difference in the application.

Another query, how have all of you finalised the list of B-Schools you want to apply to?

Will be glad to have answers.

I hope that u're considering top colleges........Thats the only thing that makes sense, specially if u're palnning to move away from India after a while............

I have seen too many MBA's from unknown or lesser colleges who r working with simple grads)( not engineers) at the same level. Remember, an MBA degree takes 2 yrs away from ur productive life ( U lose job ex and money ).BTW, I plan to give the exam again........and IF interested u can contact me................my first score was 730 !

No I m currently not thinking about MBA from foreign schools.
And I have taken admission in India.

Yes ...I am considering the top colleges only...sometimes I wonder if that is being 'too big for my boots' ;)...anyways...why on earth do you want to give the GMAT again after getting a good score like 730:wow: :wow: ...I am sorry, but I am not able to see the reasoning behind giving the GMAT again.

I know to finalise the list of schools, one wants to apply to-- requires loads of research...something that I have not exactly started. Did you just go through each school's website to understand what they look for, or are there other ways of going about it....am a little at sea here, so it will be great to get some tips

Yaar, the point here is
1) I screwed up AWA..........I wasn't awre that it is also looked into..........i wrote a couple of lines and simply left it...........Other point is that I will have close to 4 yrs at the time of joining.......which is less if we compare it to europen schools...........So, I am looking to see if I can add some kinda X factor to the profile...............I dunno if u have gone through my profile .If not please do so........I am a Bangy rt now and have my BTech from NIT/REC.There will be too many guys with my kinda stuff.

Hey , If i go for a PGDM from IMT distance learning center for 1 year, will I be able to do an MBA later on as IIM's also offer an PGDM degree?

As a person who remotely received a second degree, my advice is that you should first look at the rating of an educational institution.
