how much useful is technical analysis overall...compared to fundamental analysis..when I was in college..most of the guys said that companies and brokerage firms usually recruit fundamental analysis guys and market technicians are just for supporting their (fundamental analysis guys') view points and that no firm trades solely or majorly based on the news of technical guys..

Markets are not made by either fundamental analysts or technical analysts. Its rather made by the astute call of the investor who bases his decision on both of them equally plus other signs. At the end of the day, its the prerogative of the investor.

Fundamental analysts generally have a more broader expertise in financial and economic areas and understand the psychology of companies.
Technical Analysts are people who NEED to be very good at their technical stuff hence they are most of the time super-specialised or rather have to be super-specialised in their working knowledge of market technicals. Exceptionally good technical analysts will just look at a stock, do their calculations and tell you if its worth the pain.

Its a myriad of opinions, don't bother about all this. do things which naturally come to you. you should only need to know what works best for you and what you believe in.

You can check out BSE website.. There under archives you can find previous days rates etc.. You can find more than just prices on that site.. ratios like P/E, beta, volatility, etc can also be find related to a script.

Lets suppose i need to see history of 13/04/2010 or xx/yy/zzzz - the list of gainers, losers and their move in terms of percentage and real price. Can that happen? I need a website that does this for BSE.
Need some help.

I need a way to see daily history of the Indian Stock Market from the past.
Stock Market history of Daily gainers and Daily losers (in percentage and real price terms) over a considerable period of time.
Even a paid subscription would do but a free subscription would be preferred.

Would be a great help.

Thanx in Advance.

Well, the NSE website has a record of the closing values for about the past couple of decades. You can easily calculate the % returns from this data. But it is not adjusted data, for adjusted data you will have to use a database (like datastream, thompson financials etc., if you have stock borkers, investment bankers as friends they should have access to these databases) that usually gives both adjusted and non adjusted data.

Edit: Did not see the last couple of posts before I posted. Anyway I think the NSE website does have gainers and losers for the day. Explore the website thoroughly, if you dont find what you want call up NSE they provide data for research but that will be a paid service.

What is adjusted data? Also can you tell about the databases you mentioned?

Adjusted data is data adjusted for stock splits, bonus etc. which changes the price of the stock, but not due to changes in fundamentals.

If you are doing research it is necessary you use adjusted data or you risk the chance of getting spurious results.

Datastream, Thompson financial are financial databases that are used for research and usually contains tonnes of data related to stock markets and also other financial and economic data.

Hi, I will try and make it easier.

Go here -> Dashboard - NDTV Profit

Click on the website->click BSE-ALL on the top left screen->click on GAINERS->It shows you percentage wise and real terms gains for THAT DAY ONLY. I need the same for xx/yy/zzzz or ANY DAY IN THE PAST - well, a year worth of data would do but its best if it spans 2-3 years atelast. Is that possible for Indian stocks in the bse?

@devil money.rediff provides u daily, weekly and monthly gainers/loosers list. But u wont find more than month.

National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. .. Click on Equity --> Click on Market Information--> Click on Historical Data and you will get the closing price, the Lowest Price, the Opening Price, the Highest Price, Quantity traded and the previous day closing for any date from when the stock has begun trading to the present. You can calculate the % returns and price returns from this data in a few seconds.

You need to check if data for only gainers are provided, I am not entirely sure. When I was doing my thesis I got all the data I wanted from the NSE website, but you need to spend some time exploring it.

If you are studying in a decent B School they usually have access to most important databases. If not then I assume Investment banks and Brokers use these databases. I cant think of any other way in which you can access them. Sorry.

Just came across this thread for the first time in 2 years . wow, lotsa interesting discussion going on.
Punit , you shared a link of inditraders , anychance you member in traderji also and are you currently trading FX live also ? Have some queries , sent you a PM , do reply.
Saw some posts about TA(Technical analysis) . Well with help of TA , you can certainly have a regular source of income from trading , but do remember the prices doesnt rise or fall just because there is a EMA crossover or the stochastics are overbought. Am not telling you to trade blind without charts or by CNBC's advice but instead of concentrating on too much indicators , try to trade by watching naked price action on charts. Google about this guy - Avery Horton aka TRO , the only TA this guy uses are straight lines(yes ,S/R) . Just my 0.02$.

Public forums are good for reference like an encyclopedia. You cannot - rather should not- expect serious business talk there.

Forex trading is absolutely legal.

Check with Foreign Exchange Trading, ECN Brokerage Services or http://www.interactivebrokers.co.in/en/main.php

Most traders maintain their own database, including me.

Price data is easy to download- just google.

Back-adjusting data is an easy job... shoot your queries and I will be willing to answer.

How things works is people maintain a database of OHLC prices for past several years... you can get it free by searching or many data vendors provide for small price. I have a personalized databse of most liquid 200 stocks in NSE.

Once you have the data.. even writing excel macros will answer such basic queries.

Alternatively a far more efficient way is to get a technical analysis software which supports coding. Fibotrader is a free one. Amibroker is one of the best and not really expensive.

But thats the problem. I need the data, the software analysis is a later part. Whatever i need software wise is doable on excel itself.

Dood google karo... its totally free.

agar nahi mile to get back to me some vendors give 5-10yrs of data for less than 500Rs.

Attention! - Forex trading is illegal in India!

Traderji ka forex section ki baat hi maat karo , only few serious FX traders are there, most are interested in legality rather than trading and if you go to Forexfactory , you will see how many fx traders from our very own India are there , including some very active members.
