Batch of Gd(GT)/PI: 1.45 PM at YMCA, Mumbai on 4th March, 2008
Panel: Prof. Sarita D'souza & Prof. Mihir Mahapatra
While waiting for the GD (case-study discussion), Prof. Mihir conducted an informal PI asking us general questions. He also gave lot of information about GIM and Goa as a whole.
Inside the room, Prof. Sarita asked if we had any questions. Some questions related to Social activities and Operations specialization were answered by her. Then, she jested with us about us being able to tell her about the GT process rather than her explaining it to us - courtesy Pagalguy.
Then we were explained the process - it is already elaborated previously; won't go into the details.
The Actual case:
There is a certain telecom services company. 85% of its employees are females. Most of these are in their late teens and early twenties. However, the employees are very irregular - being regularly absent. Hence, the company has to hire extra staff in order to complete the work. This leads to losses for the company. You, as a consultant to this company, need to find a solution to this.
I was last in the group. So had to make the opening statement in the end. Most points (read all ) were said before my turn came :. However, managed to raise the point about performance based pay. .
PI:
I was the last person to be interviewed that day. It started at around 6.50 PM.
Interviewers: Prof. Sarita D'souza(S) and Prof. Mihir Mahapatra (M).
Me: Deep (D)
S: So, are you tired?
D: Well, not really. Atleast not as much as you are ma'am. 😃
S: Plz. give us your marksheets.
M: (While checking them) So you are from Fergusson college? (Did my 11-12th from Fergusson). Which stream? Science or Arts?
D: Sir, I have done engineering. Hence, science
S: You are from Pune too?
D: Yes, ma'am. (The girl before me was from Pune too )
S: So where do you work?
D: xxx company.
S: Ah, ok. (My company has a branch in Goa too )
S: Tell us something about your work.
D: Told. Some discussion regarding my responsibilities, etc.
S: So the low score in verbal - does it reflect your true ability?
D: :. No ma'am. I don't think so. Ma'am... do you feel it does?
S: Well, i don't know. I am judging you only based on this score.
D: It doesn't coz i always used to do well in the verbal section in the mocks i had given. I feel my thinking about the answers did not match with the examiner's that day
M: What are your strengths?
D: Answered.
M: (Looking at my individual scores for different semesters). Certain questions related to them - Average percentage etc.
D: Answered.
S: Are you logical?
D: Yes
S: So you don't have emotions?
D: I am a human ma'am :). You need to take into account various things while dealing as a manager. You cannot just instruct them and expect results. . You need to counsel them too.
S: So, why should we NOT take you?
D: Well, I am bit restless sometimes. :
S: So u didn't get restless waiting outside for this interview?
D: No Ma'am, we all interacted with each other. We had a great time
S: So how was your experience in the GD?
D: Ma'am it was different. For the first time, the girls were in a majority. They spoke well. It was a nice discussion. Also, i am all for women empowerment
S: Ah, you are telling this coz i am there in the panel?
D: No. These are true thoughts. You can check them on my blog too :)
S: So what do u blog about?
D: General things. Personal experiences. Reviews, etc.
S: Why did you start blogging?
D: Answered.
S: So, don't you think your privacy is breached upon?
D: No. And explained.
Thats it. (As far as i remember). Will keep adding questions in case i remember.
Overall, the process was awesome. It was very well organized. Both Prof. Sarita and Prof. Mihir were smiling all the time. Making you feel comfortable.
I hope to get some positive news.
Also, Prof. Sarita said that the results could probably be out around 3rd week of march.

hey ...just a piece of info...
during my pi the interviewers explained me how they take the weightage of XAT...
what ever the %tile u hav they divide it by 2...and it becomes the score weightage outta 50...
so a prson wid 91%tile will hav-----45.5
and wid 98%tile will hav-------49
so it all boils down to uor performance in gdpi and the 10% of wrk ex :(:((am a fresher)....

heyy i really think that this is not possible....by what u are saying no one will score less than 45.5....and for a person with say 91 and someone wid 96%tile the diff in marks would jus be 2.5.....i really think (and hope) they would give more weightage to the xat scores.......

i think its a pretty decent breakup...
out of 100, 50% marks r as per ur XAT score...
rest 50% r based on ur profile n gd/pi... its fair enough...
a person with low score is given ample opportunity to cover it up n person with high score is also compelled to give in best performance to convert the call...
i really appreciate GIM for this transparency...

I still can't believe that I messed up the PI this badly. The process was smooth till then... but to no use. All because I didn't do my home-work properly. GIM is no longer a backup... its a last cause.
Update after results (March 20)
The result says "Second list" which means a waitlist in normal terms as per discussions going around on results thread. Surprising after the PI!
No statistics about no of calls and waitlist is available now.
don't worry dude...
in fact GIM appreciates honesty....

Ok ...... I did not even know that there was a GIM GD/PI 2008 thread. I wish I did .... .but it is only a few hours after I came back home from my GD that I am seeing someone mention about this thread in GIM Admissions thread. But, I doubt things could have gone any different if I had seen this thread beforehand.
I just had my GDPI a few hours ago in New Delhi. Prof. Raghuveer Vernekar and Prof. Anirban Sengupta were taking the GD and interviews.
The GT case was that you and another of your colleague work in a firm and have to hire a summer intern. You get a stack of resumes from HR, in which you notice that an applicant has the same name as the Senior Vice President of your company with a suffix 'Jr.' Soon, the Senior Vice President comes to your office and casually enquires about how the selection process is going. The Sr. VP has never even talked to you directly before, and you have hired interns many times before. What do you do?
The GT was a total fish market. I think I gave some useful points, but probably everyone thinks that. In fact, Prof. Vernekar said clearly at the end of the discussion that you all are not acting as a team. But, I believe that if I have some excellent points and no one is letting anyone speak then I won't just withdraw and sit back just for the sake of not adding fuel to the fire. I made sure that without interrupting anyone excessively, I spoke whatever I had to speak.
The girl who started introducing the topic said that we have an application of the Sr. VP's junior, which I corrected as that a suffix Jr. actually means the son of the person of the same name. e.g. George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr. I corrected this without making a big deal out of her mistake. There were a few people that said that this guy may not be his son and that nothing is given to prove that it's not just a co-incidence. I replied that usually in case studies, facts are deliberately hidden and that you have to take inferences from whatever is given. Since, the Sr. VP himself visited you for the first time, it most probably is not a co-incidence. Then people agreed but, some became too rigid on the ethics issue and insisted that hiring this candidate would be unethical (probably to show the panel that they value honesty as much as GIM does). There was one guy who said the opposite that you should save your own job and hire this applicant (blindly, although he did not use this word). My take for the rest of the argumentative GD (and of a few others) was that you should probe deeper into the application of this candidate and actually see whether he is fit to be hired. I also said that since it is an intern's position, one must focus on the potential rather than current qualifications. If his son is not the sort of person who will become too complacent at work, coz his father is a senior employee and if he shows enough potential to be one of the top candidates then we should go ahead and hire him, and reject other equally (not more) qualified candidates, if needed. Pretty much, no black and white, only shades of grey. In the end, Professor Vernekar gave everyone 45 seconds to conclude individually.
I don't know whether anyone mentioned this earlier, but you have to write your conclusions and the process of the GT on a piece of paper in a few minutes after the discussion ends.
I was not happy with the way the GT turned out. We started discussing the GD outside in the waiting area as well, which I found out was not helping in improving my mood. Fortunately, I had my old iPod with me so I just listened to music for the rest of the time, till I was called for interview. Trust me guys, music helps A LOT.
The interview, fortunately, went well. At least, I think it went well.
The first question was an expected one. Prof Vernekar was not smiling right now.
Q. I see that you have finished your Comp Engg. degree in Texas, USA. You have even worked there for some time. Why have you come back to India? You could have finished your MBA in US itself.
A. I gave a totally honest answer. I never had any plans of staying there forever but I did not initially plan to come back so soon either. I had some visa related issues and I came back to India for a 5-6 months to re-apply for the next year. But, seeing the way the job market was booming here and knowing from my US experience that companies in US are sending all the software related work to India anyways, I decided not to return back immediately and finish my MBA here. Here is where the real action is and since I am from India itself there is no limit to what I can achieve with an MBA education. In the US, the best I can achieve is a slow and steady growth.
Q. But the firms in the US only send the low level coding work to India. The real big decisions are made in the US.
A. Indeed. But, as a junior level software developer, I was not making those big decisions anyways. Unless you are the top brass of any company, the real work is done here in India itself. 90% of Windows XP code was written in India.
Q. I think your answer sounds like a cliche.
A. With 0 ms of delay, I said, "That may be. But this still is my story."
Then, Prof RV started smiling. Probably, he wanted to stress me a bit and he was glad to see that I was still not troubled. Then again, this may be wishful thinking. But, Prof Vernekar did not seem to be a person who will give a fake smile just out of courtesy.
Q. What was your salary in the US?
A. $53,000 a year.
Q. To maintain the same lifestyle in India, how much would you have to earn?
A. Rs. 50,000 - Rs. 60,000 a month.
Q. What is one thing you learnt from your job and would like to share with us.
A. There was one big thing at work that I almost single handedly managed and a major client of my company decided not to switch to our competing company because of it. It was much more than what was expected out of a fresher software engineer. It's a long story, and I told a much abridged version of it to the professors. I will not bore you guys with it.
Q. Which other calls you have?
A. TAPMI, x, y, z.
Q. I see that you have awards for public speaking. What did you speak on?
A. I was awarded a Best Debater award by Mr. L.K. Advani while I was still in high school. It was a Cambridge format debate with two teams of 3 debaters debate two sides of a topic and it goes on like a tournament. I won the tournament .... but there were many topics involved in the whole tournament.
Q. Do you have a hangover of US culture and accent?
A. I adapt to wherever I go. There may be a few words that I pronounce differently after returning from the US, but I do not think I have an accent or undue amount of US culture's influence.
That's it. Thank you! Please call the next interviewee.....
Thank you, Sirs!
----------------------------------------
Seniors, please comment, how did it go?
Thanks and Good Luck to anyone whose GTPI is still left.
Edit: Thanks a lot, Seniors! You guys really helped me with the whole process. I praised you all in the interview and I meant every word of it. Even if I don't get through GIM, you guys are still my favorite seniors in all the B-schools in India. You guys are the #1 reason for why GIM is my #1 choice.

P1: Oh, so u shud have been in Panel 2
Me: how do I know Sir. While calling you only said "Pratik"
P1: speaks to P2, ok since we have already evaluated him for GT, lets take the interview.
P1: starts checking my certificate. So where have u worked.
Me: gave details.
P1: asks about my percentage.
Me: told
P1: is the B.E. percentage aggregate?
Me: told, no sir its final year. thats what is considered for awarding class degree in our degree.
P1: ok. so whats the aggregate.
Me: i tell
P1: have u won any scholarship in graduation.
Me: No sir, but i have been a merit holder in SSC.
P1: oh good.
P2: so tell me something about your work.
Me: told.
Then some more question on work. dont remember exactly the questions.
P1: ok pratik so tell me what are your strengths.
Me: sir, i am focussed and very determined towards my goal.
P1: oh, thats why you were focussing towards mam while speaking to her.
Me: I just smile. (actually, P1 was seating in front of me and P2 was slightly at an angle of 45 degree)
P1: so give me an example (for the strengths I said)
Me: sir, I was focussed towards doing an MBA. so, inspite of not scoring good last year, I tried again. And was determined to do better.
P1: so did you score improve
Me: certainly sir.
P1: ok, so tell me what quality a manager should have.
Me: I said manager should know how to get things done in minimum amount of time. Should have good communications skills etc.
P1: ok so if you are a manager then you will not do any work.
Me: no sir, its not like that.
P1: allrite, so in getting things done by your team; you wont even care what problems they have.
Me: no sir, here's the communication skills play the role. I will maintain a proper communication within the team. I will listen to their problem and act accordingly.
P2: ok so which other calls do u have ( i think this question was asked earlier)
Me: sir ximb, nirma
P2: so which one will you take.
Me: ximb, but I believe in grabbing the opportunity at hand. and if ximb is 20 then gim is 19.
P2: what 20?
Me: said again ....
P2: oh ok
P2: so why gim?
Me: said some good pts about gim like faculty, placement. Also, said that selection done in gim is very transparent which leads to very diverse profile and that is very important.
P2: how do u know that.
Me: read on website.
P2: so on what basis do u select which college to apply?
Me: again told the same.....faculty, placement scenario etc.
P1: so what are your other strengths.
Me: sir, i am very straightforward.
P1: so is'nt that harmful.
Me: sir sometimes it is harmful. I may hurt someone's feelings. But, its better than saying things at the back.
P1: allrite, so what are your weakness.
Me: said same, that because of being straightforward I sometimes hurt peoples emotion....
P1: neother weakness?
Me: no sir....
P1: ok i am done. asks P2 if she asked questions about the previous company?
P2: yes i have asked.(that means P1 was not even listening.)
P1: ok pratik, you may leave and ask the next person to wait outside.
Me: ok sir, thank you.
Me: sir that goofup of name....wont it be a problem?
P2: dont worry about it...we will take care...
Me: thank you sir, thank you mam....
I may have missed some questions. lasted for around 15-20 minutes. wot say seniors....do i have chance? I am very skeptical.....

Questions asked:

- Checked my file n then asked some questions related to my academic projects.
- Why MBA?
- Whether I m happy with my XAT score?
- Whether I'm too small to b a manager? ( How I would manage ppl much older than me)
- Any questions I wanted to ask

Had my GT/PI today at IIM Bangalore . The time was 1:45 PM
10th: 79%
12:63%
Grads: B tech (7.7 CGPA)
XAT : 93.4 %ile
There were 13 of us who turned up for the interview .
There were two panelists one LADY (L) and a MALE (M)
The first thing they said was that do we want to know anything about GIM .People pitched in with doubts like pay structure, Industry wise distribution. They eagerly and honestly answered all our queries.
Now then the process..
We were divided into two groups of 7 and 6 . There was a group task which was same for i guess both the groups and it was different ....we were asked to select 2 candidates among the group who will be selected for GIM . Every body was asked to make an opening statement where have to present themselves as why he/she should be selected then a discussion and then a conclusion where each one of us has to select two candidates.
The discussion was cool where everybody pitched in .I guess every body was taken by surprise with the topic.
Then the PI's and i was the last one for PI.
The question were a mixed bag...
1) What are integrated circuits ,VLSI .... as my majors was ETC
2) Interests ....what all do you read , interesting things you have read.... a long discussion on this
3) How will you rate your GT performance
4)Any other calls
5)My time log between between 12th and Engineering..."i got bombed here"
That's all i remember ...over all i guess it was a nice experience for every body.
All the best for every body as all of you PG's have been a big help this season.
You guys are the #1 reason for why GIM is my #1 choice.
Saurabh.
Thanks for the praises heaped on us.. seems Goa wont be too much of a problem adjusting for you!
Hi Puys,
