GMAT aspirants at Hyderabad - Study Group

Sunetra..whats ur background? if u have done ur engineering and done lots of maths early in ur life..then QA and DS will be surely easy for you.

Forget abt engg..If you are good at your 10th class maths and ofcourse if you have a penchant for quant then i m sure you can crack it well. and how good are you at verbal?

First brush up the basic concepts. start working on some material. identify your weakness and try to rectify them.

You may want to give some mock CAT(Computer adaptive test) before you start your prep. try Power prep. But strictly DO NOT use GPrep now. You should keep that s/w until you are very near to your G-day.

Feb March 09 is 6-7 months away. so you can plan meticulously. Thats lots of time for Gmat prep indeed. See that you don't overdo and burn yourself.

all the best. PG is here to help

Hi Neo,
I have been pretty good with maths all thru so i am not really worried about the maths part, DS is what i am gonna start today. I dont find my english faulty so no complaints abt that as well except that GMAT sentence corrections go into much detail. I have started with Manhattan SC. I thot over the dates for exams.... i feel i can put in 3-4 hrs of hardwork everyday (weekends - hsve the whole day at my disposal), so i shud appear for the test in december.... the reason y i am rushing is to be elligible for at least the second round of app processing for year 2009. Havent yet started with CR as yet. Will look into it in a couple of days.
About my background, i am a s/w engg with around 2.5 yrs of exp, currently working with HSBC GLT, hyd. I am involved in social service through office and otherwise.
waiting for ur reply.

Hi everyone,

I am a GMAT aspirant and am planning to take GMAT sometime in Feb or March 2009. I am targeting to join a B school in 2010. Please add me to your group and do let me know how to start my preparation for QA and DS. I have found some good material for VA and SC but nothing much on the QA and DS front. Please help. And do include me in case the GMAT group plans to meet sometime.

Cheers,
Sunetra

Hi Sunetra,

If you can follow the study schedule as mentioned by you, then you better take the GMAT in November. 3 months is the optimum time for the preparation of GMAT and anything less or more is equally detrimental. I kept 3 months for preparation and began to get bored towards the end. Having said that, you are the best judge of your caliber and sincerity.
Best of luck

I do not recommend classroom coaching for the simple reason that there aren't any good ones. I suggest that you continue with your study schedule and take a mock test (Preferably powerprep ETS) after 3 weeks or so. Take a date only when you get above 650. from that point, 2 months should be sufficient to add another 100 points to your score provided you stick to your schedule like a leach.
Hope that helps

Hi there!!

Has anyone checked this one?

Ramana's TestPrep

I went to this place, behind Cherma's Ameerpet, but could not meet Mr. Ramana.
All I could gather is that they have a GMAT batch for 45 days from 6am - 8am and the fees is 12.5K
Anyone there has any information about this institute.

Cheers

Never heard of this. I seriously think that GMAT preparation is better done on your own. Its great if you can form a study group. That really helped me

Hey Guys,
Well well, three years one MBA and a year an a half at a job, since I used PG last. I'm back to remembering those times when I was up all night trying to catch up with what the guys on here had to say about the CAT'05. So, what brings me back? It's the desire and the hunger to do another MBA from an IVY league school (Something I've always wanted to do).
Well for a brief intro to go I'm a pass-out of the class of 2007 from ICFAI Hyderabad, post my MBA I've been working with GE in a risk function, besides I had entrepreneurial work-ex prior to my MBA.
I intend to apply for either in 2010 or 2011, however I do intend to take my GMAT in Feb'09 (Need to get done with it so I can balance work and my applications).
The plan I have chalked out, after going through the stuff on the ever-so-informative PG, includes studying Kaplan Premier- 2008, the Official Guide - 11th edition, and the Kaplan 800, in that order. However I am fairly new to preparing for the GMAT and would welcome any suggestions that you may have, especially on the test-prep front. Besides I would also be keen to join a study group based out of Hyderabad.

Hey guys i too am from Hyderabad...luking fwd to appear for GMAT in a month..i wanted to know how good are these test series which you can buy from institutes like Manhattan,..they cost around 7-8 thousand bucks..we can just buy testcode/passwords from them and appear for them from within the confines of our home!!
Has anybdy already tried/tested these?

Hi Axe man
I am not sure how effective taking just the tests would be. Because I have enrolled with Manhattan Review a little while back and the going is good. Scoring 650+ consistently. I know it would have sounded better if I said 700+ but considering from where I started I am happy with the progress. I took the test prep and scored 550.

Good thing here I saw that I did not see at the other place I took the training last year from, was the help of the faculty. I usually sit there everyday from morning 10 to evening 5 and it helps so much that my score improved and more importantly I have the confidence that I can take the test. I wish I could give u access to the test codes but once I use them no one including me can use it again.

So coming to are books and test codes enough, I am not sure, but for me they would not have been enough, as I needed the guidance from someone that knows the subject. If u r a self study expert, it may be ok. But I had put all my hopes on getting my MBA done from a good b school and I did not want to take a chance with my score.

In fact one guy that sits with me has already paid for the B School application service. He is taking his test next week, so waiting for him to finish his test to see what his result would be.

Good luck

Hello everyone,

Like most people here im trying to prepare for my GMAT too, i was thinking about joining Princeton review and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? they are charging a hefty 24k for a 7 week 2 days a week course. Is it worth it? ive seen a few 700+ scores posted in here what have their preperations been like? shud we join these institutes or just self study?

speaking of self study are there any Gmat study groups going on that i may be able to join? i live near the Lakdikapul are in Hyderabad

Thanks in advance!!
Bilal

Being located at Hyderabad I took virtual course from CSquare Bangalore. Strategy and method whatever taught by this institute are good though I am not still at par with GMAT. Anybody can easily understand that preparation and craking exam are completely different. It varies with mental stamina, perseverance and strong focus. As from course perspective, CSquare is good because they cover only OGs and GMATPrep which are strongly relevant to GMAT exam. On other hand as they only cover GMATPrep software, very soon you will be out of practice questions as example I have exhausted my GMATPrep and now I don't get any relevant question sets to understand my performance level. MGMAT cat is good for practice but actual score varies at least 50-60 points with MGMAT Cat's score. Kaplan is not at par with GMAT and I have no idea about Princeton.
Now I am preparing for my next and last GMAT attempt. Let me know if you want to get any information more. Well in last GMAT I have got 5.5 in AWA. I feel AWA score is not so important factor for University application though it is required.

My 2 cents. No institute is best when it comes to helping a person get a good score. I think it depends on who the faculty is and how much we are able to squeeze out of the faculty and then go back and practice.

So looking at the results they are pretty good as this I think is the 6th 700+ score and obviously 780 being the top. And regarding faculty help, it is really very good. I had taken the training last year in Princeton and now I am taking it here and both are ok but most of the best faculty that was in Princeton is now with Manhattan. So teaching techniques are a bit different but the support I see is more here. Infrastructure is good, free coffee, A/C, Wi-FI enabled office. I was at the Himayatnagar Princeton last year and more than half the time A/C was not working and when I went there few days I was looked at like, "Here he comes". I have lived in the US for 8 years upto May 2007. SO things like A/C, Coffee etc are good as far as I am concerned. Just basic conveniences I guess. And if I were you and you were smart, I would not consider the other players around like IMS or Visu or whoever. Honestly I dont know about C Square. Have heard of them only recently after I joined here. So never had a reason to see what they have to offer. Most people feel that Rs 25k or whatever is too high. But they dont look to get the max out of the institute so that they get a higher score. I would rather pay Rs 50,000 to an institute which can help me get 700+ than an institute that gives me the training for lets say for discussion purposes "free". Because why would I want to save Rs 50,000 and lose a chance to get into a reputed B School. And on the same lines why would I want to lose money on a score that is not worth mentioning even if it means Rs 5000 or Rs 10,000.

So to sum it up. It is not just what they teach. It is how much we practice. But the practice needs to be guided. And ultimately it is our decision to join a particular institute. A year down the road we will say one of two things. I wish I had joined that other institute or I am glad I joined this institute. So if u r happy u get the credit. If u r not, u get the blame.

My advice is do ur homework, attend the demo sessions they conduct, grill the faculty to the max extent by asking them questions, the answers of which will help u make a decision as to whether u should join them.

Having said that, I am actually undergoing training at Manhattan Review. On Sunday there was a celebration in Himayatnagar, the center I enrolled in and the reason for celebration was that a student scored 780 on the test. 99th percentile in Math and 98 percentile in Verbal. I was impressed.

So training, guidance and support and after test revisions sum up the preparation for the test. Now there are a few who dont need the training. God bless them and I am sure not one of them. So here I am, hoping to get a good score and get into a good B School.

Currently I am in the 720 range in my mock tests and hoping to continue the same.

Good luck everyone.

JK
