GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

Samuel is obviously a bad fisherman. During the past season, in which he and the five members of his team spent four months on a boat together off Dutch Harbor, AK, he caught fewer fish than any of his teammates.
Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument above?
A)Two seasons ago, Samuel fished on another boat off Dutch Harbor and caught more fish than any other member of that boat.
B)Before becoming a fisherman, Samuel piloted a fishing boat whose members regularly caught record numbers of fish.
C)While fishing this past season, Samuel fell sick for a week and did not catch any fish during this time.
D)Unlike the other fishermen on his boat, at the order of the captain, Samuel fished this past season with experimental bait.
E)Amongst the fishing community in Dutch Harbor, Samuel has a reputation for being an especially bad fisherman.

The OA is D.. was also stumped at first sight and marked C.. but wat if other members also got sick in past season???

IMO.... (D).... OA?

Samuel is obviously a bad fisherman. Tht's what we want to prove wrong...

Let's look at (C).... If Samuel was sick and couldn't get as many fish as his teammates.... this doesn't weaken our arguement. This in fact will provide reason for the same. And other team members being well or sick is of no relevance here.

So... (D) is the best choice here....

To avoid a hostile takeover attempt, the board of directors of Wellco, Inc., a provider of life and health insurance, planned to take out large loans and use them to purchase a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters. The directors anticipated that these purchase initially would plunge the corporation deep into debt, rendering it unattractive to those who wanted to take it over, but that steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years. Meanwhile, revenues from the three new businesses would enable the corporation as a whole to continue to meet its increased operating expenses. Ultimately, according o the directors plan, the diversification would strengthen the corporation by varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues.

Which of the following, assuming that all are equally possible, would most enhance the chances of the plans success?

(A) A widespread drought decreases the availability of cacao beans, from which chocolate is manufacture, diving up chocolate prices worldwide.
(B) New government regulations require a 30 percent across-the-board rate rollback of all insurance companies, to begin immediately and to be completed within a five-year period.
(C) Congress enacts a statute, effective after six months, making it illegal for any parent not to carry health insurance coverage for his or her child.
(D) Large-screen televisions drop dramatically in price due to surprise alterations in trade barriers with Japan; movie theater attendance dwindles as a consequence.
(E) A new, inexpensive process is discovered for making paper pulp, and paper prices fall to 60 percent of their former level.

IMO: C

A - benefits the chocolate company, but does not ensure anything about others.
B,D - Out of scope.
E - Benefits publishing company, but does nit ensure anything about others.
C - Attacks the original issue, and ensures cash flow for the parent company itself.

Recently in City X, developers have stopped buying land, contractors have found themselves going without work for longer periods, and banks have issued fewer mortgages. There must be fewer new residents moving to City X than there were previously.

Which of the following indicates a flaw in the reasoning above?

This year several housing blocks have gone on the market after being held up for months by legal red tape.

The average size of a new home has increased significantly over the past several years.

Re-sales of condominiums have increased over the past six months.

The cost of materials such as lumber and cement has decreased over the past year.

Sales of other big-ticket items, such as automobiles and boats, has remained steady over the past year.

another one::

Everyone who has graduated from TopNotch High School has an intelligence quotient (IQ) of over 120. Most students with an IQ of over 120 and all students with an IQ of over 150 who apply to one or more Ivy League universities are accepted to at least one of them.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions?

Every graduate of TopNotch High School with an IQ of 150 has been accepted to at least one Ivy-League school.

If a person is a high-school graduate and has an IQ of less than 100, he or she could not have been a student at TopNotch High School.

If a person has an IQ of 130 and is attending an Ivy-League school, it is possible for him or her to have graduated from TopNotch High School.

At least one graduate from TopNotch high school who has applied to at least one Ivy-League university has been accepted to one of them.

If a high-school graduate has an IQ of 150 and is not attending an Ivy-League school, then he or she did not apply to one of them.

I wud go with option C for the above one

I wud go with option B
Recently in City X, developers have stopped buying land, contractors have found themselves going without work for longer periods, and banks have issued fewer mortgages. There must be fewer new residents moving to City X than there were previously.

Which of the following indicates a flaw in the reasoning above?

This year several housing blocks have gone on the market after being held up for months by legal red tape. - even though the housing blocks have been off the market, once they are on the market the contractors should be getting the work, which is not the case, therefore eliminated

The average size of a new home has increased significantly over the past several years. irrelevant

Re-sales of condominiums have increased over the past six months. - correctly identifies as reason for no work. and this seems to be the best among the lot

The cost of materials such as lumber and cement has decreased over the past year. - irrelevant

Sales of other big-ticket items, such as automobiles and boats, has remained steady over the past year. - irrelevant

If a person is a high-school graduate and has an IQ of less than 100, he or she could not have been a student at TopNotch High School. - could be an answer, but I would eliminate it because the case of students not being from different school has been discussed in the argument, and it says could not have been, which also means could have been ... so it is possible that a person with IQ 120 .
If a person has an IQ of 130 and is attending an Ivy-League school, it is possible for him or her to have graduated from TopNotch High School. - correctly identifies a possibility of the person to have graduated from TopNotch High school.

At least one graduate from TopNotch high school who has applied to at least one Ivy-League university has been accepted to one of them. - don't see the idea behind this option .. irrelevant

If a high-school graduate has an IQ of 150 and is not attending an Ivy-League school, then he or she did not apply to one of them. - too extreme

Can anyone explain the 1st one - A and C are too close!

exactly .. i was to choose between A or C ... and C made more sense, but again the time frame given is too specific.

and i gave an explanation why I chose C and not A, but I myself was not convinced with that explanation. if anyone can clarify this for me, it'll be nice !!

cheers !!

Not sure why its not 'A'
A ina way weakens the argument by directly providing a new perspective.proves that Samuel is not a bad fisherman.

I guess, and this is again only a guess, what we are looking for here, is another backup explanation for Samuel's inability to catch sufficient fish. His sickness explains that inability without putting a doubt on his quality as a fisherman.

I would select C over A because C is more directly relevant to the time fram under consideration than A. Otherwise, A also seems to provide a supporting evidence to the contrary and should suffice as an explanation.

Folks, what is the OA?

Folks, solve this one...

Is your company going to continue to discriminate against women in its hiring and promotion policies?

The question above might be considered unfair because it

A. fails to mention that other companies might have similar practices
B. assumes that the interviewee agree with the policies of the company
C. reveals a bias on the part of the questioner
D. contains a hidden presupposition that the responder might wish to contest
E. shifts the focus of the attention from the person interviewed to the company.

Also, do they really ask such questions in GMAT?

IMO D

because it assumes that the company is already showing discrimination..

what is OA ?

IMO D

because it assumes that the company is already showing discrimination..

what is OA ?

The OA is "D".

But I still do not get the logic behind the answer. Can someone please elaborate?

I had marked the answer as "C".
