Folks plz try this one, I confused between B and D
Samples from a ceramic vase found at a tomb in
Sicily prove that the vase was manufactured in
Greece. Since the occupant of the tomb died during
the reign of a Sicilian ruler who lived 2,700 years
ago, the location of the vase indicates that there was
trade between Sicily and Greece 2,700 years ago.
Which of the following is an assumption on which
the argument depends?
(A) Sicilian potters who lived during the reign of the
ruler did not produce work of the same level of
quality as did Greek potters.
(B) Sicilian clay that was used in the manufacture of
pottery during the ruler's reign bore little
resemblance to Greek clay used to manufacture
pottery at that time.
(C) At the time that the occupant of the tomb was
alive, there were ships capable of transporting
large quantities of manufactured goods between
Sicily and Greece.
(D) The vase that was found at the Sicilian tomb was
not placed there many generations later by
descendants of the occupant of the tomb.
(E) The occupant of the tomb was not a member of
the royal family to which the Sicilian ruler
belonged.

Option D
I would eliminate B on the basis that it talks about clay, which is kind of out of the scope of the argument.
The other options can be eliminated easily on the basis of irrelevance.
Sorry for the double post!

Ya, the answer is D. the vase wasn't placed in the tomb later by the descendants of the occupants of the tomb is certainly the assumption on the conclusion is based.
In B, The kind of clay used is out of the scope of the argument.
and rest choices are irrelevant.

folks,
Please try this,
Following the introduction of mobile phones last year, the number of automobile accidents has increased. Talking on a mobile phone distracts the driver and hence causes accidents.
All of the following could be used to weaken the above argument, except:
A. The number of cars on the road has increased in the last year.
B. Radio stations have broadcast more interesting programs in the last year, which distract drivers.
C. Due to poor maintenance, the road conditions have worsened over the last year.
D. Most of the mobile phones were sold to people who spend at least 4 hours on the road everyday.
E. Most mobile owners travel in chauffeur driven vehicles.
I'm confused between C and D.

IMO D
If C is the reason of accident it weakens the argument and D supports it.
Capuchin monkeys often rub their bodies with a certain type of millipede. Laboratory tests show that secretions from the bodies of these millipedes are rich in two chemicals that are potent mosquito repellents, and mosquitoes carry parasites that debilitate capuchins. Some scientists hypothesize that the monkeys rub their bodies with the millipedes because doing so helps protect them from mosquitoes.
Which of the following, if true, provides the most support for the scientists' hypothesis?
- A single millipede often gets passed around among several capuchins, all of whom rub their bodies with it.
- The two chemicals that repel mosquitoes also repel several other varieties of insects.
- The capuchins rarely rub their bodies with the millipedes except during the rainy season, when mosquito populations are at their peak.
- Although the capuchins eat several species of insects, they do not eat the type of millipede they use to rub their bodies.
- The two insect-repelling chemicals in the secretions of the millipedes are carcinogenic for humans but do not appear to be carcinogenic for capuchins.
Puys please help me with this one:

E. Most mobile owners travel in chauffeur driven vehicles.
I'm confused between C and D.
D is the answer.
A tells the cause of increase in accidents is the increase in number of cars on road. B tells it's the Radio Stations which distracts the drivers and C tells the poor maintaince of roads are responsible for the accidents.
I doubted E, cause thought probably the chauffeurs use mobile while driving but can't assume that. and so D supports the argument.

A is irrelevant, it tells about millipede passes around among several capuchins, all of whom rub it on thier bodies but doesn't tell whether they use it to protect them from mosquitos or not.
B is irrelevant too, it tells about two chemicals that repel against mosquitos repels too against other insects, and doesn't talk about the hypthosis in question.
D does tell that the capuchins eat several species of insects, but they do not eat the type of millipede they use to rub their bodies. But again it's irrelevant. doesn't talk why they do so, to protect themselves from mosquitos or not.
E too talks non-sense! Says that two insect-repelling chemicals in the secretions of the millipedes are carcinogenic for humans but do not appear to be carcinogenic for capuchins! the ques asks: does monkeys rub their bodies with millipedes to protect themselves form monkeys...and E talk about human beings!
C is the only sensible option left telling monkeys rub the millipedes on thier bodies in rainy season when mosquitos are there is number. which tells to protect themselves.and strengths the hypothesis.
Hope the reasoning is clear.

Yes, D is the OA. Thanks all.
Dobson: Some historians claim that the people who built a ring of stones thousands of years ago in Britain were knowledgeable about celestial events. The grounds for this claim are that two of the stones determine a line pointing directly to the position of the sun at sunrise at the spring equinox. However, there are many stones in the ring so the chance that one pair will point in a celestially significant direction is high. Therefore, the people who built the ring were not knowledgeable about celestial events.
Which one of the following is an error of reasoning in Dobson's argument?
A. The failure of cited evidence to establish a statement is taken as evidence that that statement is false.
B. Dobson's conclusion logically contradicts some of the evidence presented in support of it.
C. Statements that absolutely establish Dobson's conclusion are treated as if they merely give some support to that conclusion.
D. Something that is merely a matter of opinion is treated as if it were subject to verification as a fact.
E. Dobson is not a scientist.
Question 2:
After a week, the body of anyone infected by virus X will produce antibodies to fight the virus. The antibodies will increase in number for the next year or so. There is now a test that reliably indicates how many antibodies are present in a person's body. If positive, this test can be used during the first year of infection to estimate within a month of accuracy when that person became infected by the virus.
Which one of the following conclusions is best supported by the statements above?
A. Antibodies increase in number only until they have defeated the virus.
B. Without the test for antibodies, there is no way of establishing whether a person has virus X.
C. Antibodies are produced only for viral infections that cannot be fought by any other body defenses.
D. If a person remains infected by virus X indefinitely, there is no limit to the number of antibodies that can be present in the person's body.
E. Anyone infected by virus X will fail for a period of time to exhibit infection if tested by the antibody test.
Question 3: This one's strange:
I recently doubled my salary by taking a new job. I 've been working at a company for two days and now realize that the company 's workers are mean-spirited and egotistical. I have decided that high paying companies have unfriendly employees.
Which of the following, if true, would weaken the above conclusion?
A. The work environment brings out the worst in people.
B. The company has 150,000 employees.
C. Salary is more important than work environment.
D. The benefits of the new job outweigh the unfriendly people.
E. Egotistical workers can often outperform less self-confident employees.
Question 4:
There has been a sharp increase in the subscription prices of many professional and scholarly journals in the past seven years. Many publishers ascribe these increases to the availability of photocopying facilities, which facilitates copying articles in lieu of buying an entire journal.
Which of the following, if true, would best strengthen this explanation?
A. The great majority of professional and scholarly journals have a massive backlog of papers awaiting publication.
B. Over the last three years, there has been a substantial decline in the number of individual subscriptions to professional and scholarly journals, while library subscriptions have remained fairly stable.
C. In the five years immediately preceding the price surge, there was a substantial decline in the number of individual subscriptions to professional and scholarly journals, while library subscriptions remained fairly stable.
D. Many libraries have recently begun cutting back on subscriptions to professional and scholarly journals.
E. In almost every field, several new professional and scholarly journals have begun publication in the past few years.
Question 5:
Over the last 10 years the retail hardware business has seen massive consolidation with many smaller hardware retailers going out of business. These changes have been attributed to the new ' category killer ' stores that have the volume and buying leverage to offer very low prices while maintaining healthy profit margins. This analysis is incorrect, however, because since even today the so-called superstores only have a small share of the total retail hardware market.
Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument that the analysis is flawed?
A. Most of the larger customers for hardware purchases buy directly from manufacturers and thus do not participate in the retail market.
B. The superstores' heavy advertising of their low prices has forced prices down throughout the retail market for hardware supplies.
C. Many of the ' category killer ' stores have themselves gone out of business.
D. Most of the hardware superstores sell a diversified base of goods, not just hardware.
E. The internet has created new openings for dozens of small internet-based hardware retailers.

Can anyone post right answer explanation to below question?
High school students who feel that they are not succeeding in high school often drop out before graduating and go to work. Last year however , the city's high school drop out rate was significantly lower than the previous years rate. The is encouraging evidence that the program instituted two years ago to improve the moral of the high school students has began to take effect to reduce dropouts.
Which of the following , if true about the last year , most seriously weaken the argument?
A. There was a recession that caused high level of unemployment in the city.
B. The moral of students who drop out of high school had been low even before they reach high school.
C. As in the preceding year more high school students remained in the school than dropped out.
D. High schools in the city established placement offices to assist graduates in obtaining employment.
E.The anti drop out program was primarily aimed at improving students moral in those high schools with high dropout rates.
This question is from power score CR bible. I'm always being trapped in shell game answers. and the reason doesn't seem to be convincing why my answers are wrong. does any one know the right answer nd its reason?
Hi. I just gave my first GMATPrep exam, and my accuracy in CR was below 50%! Sheesh...anyway...I thought I should answer qs. posted on this forum for more practice. But, I want to know the SOURCE of questions posted here...cos if they're from any of the OGs, then I don't want to be answering them just as yet. Please let me know...thanks a lot!
Hello,
I am posting one of the classic critical reasoning problem:
try solving this and know/learn the explanation of the same well.
once you understand such a problem I am sure most of your CR fear is out.
try this:
By process of elimination it's option C

There is no fixed source... these Qs come from various sources (including OG) and various users... why don't you want to solve OG by the way... OGs are considered the best source available... rather you should solve each OG (10, 11, 12th editions) twice if possible...
