1)Insect infestations in certain cotton growing regions of the world have caused dramatic increases in the price of cotton on the world market. Knowing that cotton plants mature quickly, many soybean growers in ortovia plan to cease growing soybean, the price of which has long been stable, and to begin raising cotton instead, thereby taking advantage of the high price to increase their income significantly at least over the next several years
Which of the following, if true, most calls into question the reasoning on which the plan is based?
a) the cost of raising soybeans has increased significantly over the past several years and is expected to continue to climb
b) tests of a newly developed, inexpensive pesticide have shown it to be both environmentally safe and effective against the insects that have infected cotton crops
c) in the past several years there has been no sharp increase in the demand for cotton and for goods made out of cotton
d) many consumers consider cotton cloth a necessity rather than a luxury and would be willing to pay significantly higher prices for cotton goods than they currently pay
2) Following several years of declining advertising sales, the Greenville Times reorganized its advertising sales force 2 years ago. Before the reorganization, the sales force was organized geographically, with some sales reps concentrating on city center businesses and others concentrating on different outlying regions. The reorganization attempted to increase the sales reps knowledge of clients businesses by having each sales rep deal with only one type of industry or of retailing. After the reorganization advertisement sales increased.
In assessing whether the improvement in advertising sales can properly be attributed to the reorganization, it would be helpful to find out each of the following except
A) two years ago, what proportion of the Greenville Times total revenue was generated by advertising sales?
B) Has the circulation of GT increased substantially in the last 2 years
C) Has there been a substantial turnover in personnel in the advertising sales force over the last 2 years?
D) Before the reorganization, had sales rep found it difficult to keep up with relevant developments in all the types of businesses to which they were assigned?
E) Has the economy in Greenville and the surrounding regions been growing rapidly over the last 2 years?
3) One of the limiting factors in human physical performance is the amount of oxygen absorbed by the muscles from the bloodstream. Accordingly entrepreneurs have begun selling at gymnasiums and health clubs bottles of drinking water, labeled SuperOXY that has extra oxygen dissolved in water. Such water would be useless in improving physical performance, however, since the amount of oxygen in the blood of someone who is exercising is already more than the muscle cells can absorb
Which of the following , if true , would serve the same function in the argument as the statement in boldface?
a) world class athletes turn in record performance without such water
b) frequent physical exercise increases the body`s ability to take in and use oxygen
c) the only way to get oxygen into the bloodstream so that it can be absorbed by the muscles is thru the lungs
d) lack of oxygen is not the only factor limiting human physical performance
e) the water lost in exercising can be replaced with ordinary tap water
4) Excavations of the Roman city of Sepphoris have uncovered numerous detailed mosaics depicting several readily identifiable animal species : a hare, a partridge and various Mediterranean fish. Oddly most of the species represented did not live in the Sepphoris region when these mosaics were created. Since identical motifs appear in mosaics found in other roman cities, however, the mosaics of Sepphoris were likely created by traveling artisans from some other part of the roman empire
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
a) The sepphoris mosaics are not composed exclusively of types of stones found naturally in the Sepphoris area
b) There is no single region to which all the species depicted in the Sepphoris mosaics are native
c) No motifs appear in the Sepphoris Mosaics that do not also appear in the mosaics of some other roman city
d) All of the animal figures in the SM are readily identifiable as representations of known species

I can try for the first one. It shows one of the latest traps in CR. The argument starts with insect infestations as the reason for increasing cotton prices and then go too far to soybean, its price and farmers changing the crop to cotton because of high price. By the time you end up reading u r almost looking for an answer which looks more or less like option C. But read the question stem again and understand what the question is asking. It asks first to find the reasoning on which the plan is based. The hidden assumption here is that the cause of increasing cotton prices will remain the cause in future as well, which is insect infestations. So we are looking for an answer which calls into question the insect infestation activity, apprently the cause of the stated effect (increasing prices of cotton). This is where option B comes into picture. If that new pesticide is used then the cause will no more be cause for the effect and reasoning is questioned!!

May I suggest to post the answers separately (please do not highlight the original options in the first post tself) and to provide the explanations for each option as why 4 options are incorrect and the 5th is correct?
This will best serve the purpose of posting the questions on the forum for others to solve. Also, without the explanations, it is never clear whether it was a guess or there was any thought process in getting the answer.

Oddly most of the species represented did not live in the Sepphoris region when these mosaics were created. Since identical motifs appear in mosaics found in other roman cities, however, the mosaics of Sepphoris were likely created by traveling artisans from some other part of the roman empire
Premises:
a. Numerous mosaics found in Sepphoris
b. None of the animals shown in the mosaics lived in Sepphoris
c. Identical animals in mosaics in other roman cities i.e. these "motifs" were prevalent in that area in that time.
Argument/Conclusion:
Animals in mosaics created by travelling artisans from other part of the roman empire
We try to "prephrase" the answer choice by thinking out what could be the possible assumptions aka linkage between premise and argument.
Linkages:
Was not found in Sepphoris but in other areas -> hence found in motifs in Sepphoris by "travelling" artisans
MEANS
a. Such animals were found in "other" locations
b. Artisans were allowed to travel (a bit vague I admit
)c. Someone else apart from the Artisans could have passed on information
This is as best you can get to assumptions. Let us attack the answer options now.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
a) The sepphoris mosaics are not composed exclusively of types of stones found naturally in the Sepphoris area
This means that the mosaics were not created in Sepphoris at all which is not what the argument says that they were created in the same city. Eliminate.
b) There is no single region to which all the species depicted in the Sepphoris mosaics are native
This is a classic "trap" - this is out of scope. We are not talking about what kind of species, where they existed, whether they co-existed etc.
c) No motifs appear in the Sepphoris Mosaics that do not also appear in the mosaics of some other roman city
Confusing when you read it the first time but if you read it carefully you will realize it talks about motifs appearing in other roman cities - which is again out of scope since we are restricted to only motifs appearing in Sepphoris.
d) All of the animal figures in the SM are readily identifiable as representations of known species
This one is not even out of scope - it is actually irrelevant. Whether they are "readily identifiable as representations" is not something we know about or care about.
e) There was not a common repertory of mosaic designs with which artisans who lived in various parts of the roman empire were familiar
This meant there was some other means of the information about the motifs coming into Sepphoris other than travelling artisans. This *is* an important assumption/consideration that I am making in arriving at the conclusion.

Thanks Arun for the wonderful explanation.
However, I have a question on this.
The conclusion says: the mosaics of Sepphoris were likely created by traveling artisans from some other part of the roman empire.
However, your explanation for option (e) says that there was some other means of the information about motifs into Sepphoris other than travelling artisans.
I am not able to clearly stablish a linkage between the above two. Is the word likey in the conclusion telling us there could be some other means? I agree that rest of the choices seems to be wrong (from your explanation).
Another questions - what is the level of this CR?

1. Likely means something that is possible. Now as a conclusion when the author is trying to debate on something he will not say "definitely"
So you can pardon the reasoning license (where do I apply for one
) in this question. It means our assumption needs to say why it is "likely" and not "unlikely"2. This was 700-level but not a super-toughie.

Technically a given category of insurance policy is under priced if, over time, claims against it plus expenses associated with it exceed total income from premiums. But premium income can be invested and will then yield returns of its own. Therefore, an under priced policy does not represent a net loss in every case.
The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions?
(A) No insurance policies are deliberately under priced in order to attract customers to the insurance company offering such policies.
(B) A policy that represents a net loss to the insurance company is not an under priced policy in every case.
(C) There are policies for which the level of claims per year can be predicted with great accuracy before premiums are set.
(D) The income earned by investing premium income is the most important determinant of an insurance companys profits.
(E) The claims against at least some under priced policies do not require paying out all of the premium income from those policies as soon as it is earned.
IMO answer should be B. please post your explanations and answers. i couldnt find OA.

Hey,what is the range of this question ?
Premise - If insurance policy is over time, and claims against it plus expenses associated with it exceed total income from premiums then
Conclusion - A given category of insurance policy is under priced.
Counter Premise - "but" ( signalling word to prove that it is counter premise) premium income can be invested and will then yield returns of its own.
Main conclusion based on counter premise - Beginning with signalling word "therefore" an under priced policy does not represent a net loss in every case.
Now the assumption should be the one which should lead premise to justify the validity of conclusion efficiently.
Only B which said "policy that represents a net loss to the insurance company is not an under priced policy in
every case" can be the assumption to the argument. as our counter premise says premium income of every
policy can be invested and if this investment leads more profit than the loss incurred on any under priced
policy then also under priced policy does not leads to overall loss, which is our main conclusion.

Hey atrish22,
thanks for a wonderful explanation. I wonder if you apply similar strategy for solving each CR question that too in 1.75 min. but sure u get higher percentage of accuracy. I have no idea about the range of this question. below is my line of reasoning.
main conclusion is an under priced policy does not represent a net loss in every case. I have got some summary for CR which says for assumption question look for answer choice that links the premise with conclusion or supports/defends the conclusion from breaking down. Also look for similar words with conclusion i.e. if conclusion talks about every that assumption answer choice cant be the one which talks about some or most... It has to be every. This is to eliminate close choices. Then also look for yes/no test for assumption.
in our case B says " A policy that represents a net loss to the insurance company is not an under priced policy in every case." now if a policy with net loss is an underprised policy in every case then our main conclusion is gone. words "not and every" defends our conclusion, so B is the choice.
I apply your style only when i run out of my techniques, that means i have 90% probability of getting that question wrong. hahaha... it moves on...
cheers and thanks.

IMO Answer is E. Well the assumption here is that you earn returns on the premium and to do so you have to have some time i.e. the claims are not paid out right away. Am I missing something?

As part of our program to halt the influx of illegal immigrants, the administration is proposing the creation of a national identity card. The card would be available only to U.S. citizens and to registered aliens, and all persons would be required to produce the card before they could be given a job. Of course, such a system holds the potential, however slight, for the abuse of civil liberties. Therefore, all personal information gathered through this system would be held strictly confidential, to be released only by authorized personnel under appropriate circumstances. Those who are in compliance with U.S. laws would have nothing to fear from the identity card system.

try this:
In the years since the city of London imposed strict air-pollution regulations on local industry, the number of bird species seen in and around London has increased dramatically. Similar air-pollution rules should be imposed in other major cities.
Each of the following is an assumption made in the argument above EXCEPT:
(A) In most major cities, air-pollution problems are caused almost entirely by local industry.
