Q1. Although aspirin has been proven to eliminate moderate fever associated with some illnesses, many doctors no longer routinely recommend its use for this purpose. A moderate fever stimulates the activity of the bodys disease-fighting white blood cells and also inhibits the growth of many strains of disease-causing bacteria. If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by them? (A) Aspirin, an effective painkiller, alleviates the pain and discomfort of many illnesses. (B) Aspirin can prolong a patients illness by eliminating moderate fever helpful in fighting some diseases. (C) Aspirin inhibits the growth of white blood cells, which are necessary for fighting some illnesses. (D) The more white blood cells a patients body produces, the less severe the patients illness will be (E) The focus of modern medicine is on inhibiting the growth of disease-causing bacteria within the body. between 'b' & 'c' ? Q2. Because postage rates are rising, Home Decorator magazine plans to maximize its profits by reducing by one half the number of issues it publishes each year. The quality of articles, the number of articles published per year, and the subscription price will not change. Market research shows that neither subscribers nor advertisers will be lost if the magazines plan is instituted. Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest evidence that the magazines profits are likely to decline if the plan is instituted? (A) With the new postage rates, a typical issue under the proposed plan would cost about one-third more to mail than a typical current issue would. (B) The majority of the magazines subscribers are less concerned about a possible reduction in the quantity of the magazines articles than about a possible loss of the current high quality of its articles. (C) Many of the magazines long-time subscribers would continue their subscriptions even if the subscription price were increased. (D) Most of the advertisers that purchase advertising space in the magazine will continue to spend the same amount on advertising per issue as they have in the past (E) Production costs for the magazine are expected to remain stable.
NANB hepatitis.... in 'e' if the frequency of the donors with NANB hepatitis reduces, it will certainly reduce the % of ppl infected with NANB from donating blood
Q1) The sequence is this Aspirin ----eliminate moderate fever----moderate fever----helps produce white blood cells. There is no direct link between aspirin and white blood cells so conclusion cannot be made.B is the better of the two.A conclusion most often restates premise in a concise way.
This question is there in OG11.You can see the detailed explanation there
q2) This ,again is there in OG11. See the detailed explanation there. Magazine thinks advertisers stay and there won't be any loss in reducing the numbers. But what if advertisers pay per magazine? the lesser the number the lesser the revenue from advertisement. So answer is D
An artist must suffer for his art say these successful entrepreneurs who attempt to pass themselves off as artist. 1) I think A goes with the mood of the passage. Not sure though. The passage is critical of Entrepreneurs and tries imply that they don't know much about art and is sarcastic in its choice of sentences. Don't know whether its correct. 2) I think answer is A. I don't think its strong but looks stronger than any other choice(which I think are out of scope).Looking to see the right answers

shiva,
i also chose the same options for both, but unfortunately got both of them wrong. As per the book, correct answers are 1. (B) 2.(B)
I m convinced with the answer to the first question now but not with the second question. Moreover, this argument seems very ambiguous to me. As we understood that passage is critical to entrepreneurs but the author is has used "artist" and "entrepreneur" interchangeably. looking for ur opinion on this...are we gonna get these kinds of q's in real GMAT?

hi montaques, the first line " An artist must suffer for his art say these successful entrepreneurs who attempt to pass themselves off as artist" is the one to focus on. Successful entrepreneurs allegedly make money by selling mediocre drawings and pose as artists themselves.Secondly they also say that an artist must suffer for his/her art.
So 1B and 2A would be my choices. 2B, according to the book u r referring, seems out of scope. All they have discussed is financial deprivation.we don't know about any other deprivation but that does not mean that it is the only form of deprivation an artist can undergo, rite? PS: i havent seen these 'fill in the blank' type Qs yet:)

If 'A's are ruled out then 'B's look good. In 1 he is being sarcastic about table-well laid so to make it complete some deprivation sort of thing suits. In second when author says in the introductory statement artists must suffer he doesn't go on to say anything to discredit it. I have not come across these kind of questions (but I haven't seen a lot of questions either π I have finsihed only OG11 nothing else and GMAT prep tests). I took gmat test last month with just 1 and half months preparation.I think you need at least 3 months and Go through OGs(10 and 11) atleast twice(I didn't complete it even once,a cardinal sin) .I ended up getting q(51) and v(2(total 670) so spending most of my time in verbal to improve my area(I had over 90% accuracy in CR but sucked at SC with just 50 % accuracy). I think 1000CR series is good I have just started it.

I got (b) for both questions.
Although artists propagate the idea that they ought to suffer for all their bad works, they never do so because their works still sell. So when the author says that artists don't suffer, he's obviously considering only the financial aspect of it. Hence, (B) for the 2nd question. For the first question, (b) is obvious from the overall theme of the passage (artists claim to suffer for their bad works while they actually don't).

hmmm..thanku for suggesting 1000cr...i was looking for some good material to practice CR...and goodluck for next time

Got it....thanku for clarifying the second answer. well, how do u rate these q's? ...just wanted to know what kind of difficulty level one can expect in real GMAT
thnx dude but m nt 2 mch convinced with Ques1 explanation...in option D, if ppl r genetically susceptilble to diseases..this means they'll fall sick too... may b m nt able to mae out the diff b/w options c & d
Ques 1. Within 20 years it will probably be possible to identify the genetic susceptibility an individual may have toward any particular disease. Eventually, effective strategies will be discovered to counteract each such susceptibility. Once these effective strategies are found, therefore, the people who follow them will never get sick. The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions? (A) For every disease there is only one strategy that can prevent its occurrence. (B) In the future, genetics will be the only medical specialty of any importance. (C) All human sicknesses are in part the result of individuals' genetic susceptibilities. (D) All humans are genetically susceptible to some diseases. (E) People will follow medical advice when they are convinced that it is effective Well the confusion is between choices 'c' & 'd'....... Very triky one, I will feel happy if I see something like this in the exam... I would go with D. Argument summary: "Identify genentic suc to diseases + strat= so never sick" If you denied stament D the argument is useless because you can not conclude that people who follows strat will never get sick. Choice C, take into account that the argument does not say that genetic susc cause human sick...

Paki,
option (d) merely suggests that humans are generally susceptible to some diseases. But, they can be susceptible to some other non-genetic disease as well. Therefore, this statement doesn't provide full support to the argument.
However, option (c) clearly states that all diseases are genetically related. Option (C) seems correct to me

I'd go for option C...The argument flows like this
genetic susceptibility towards diseases would be identified, strategies to overcome them would be devised => people who follow them will never get sick.
Now, to establish a relation between the premises & the conclusion, it is essential that we assume that all sorts of sickness result from genetic susceptibilities.Hence, (c)
1.c 2.b 3.c In my opinion (D)Any field of study that employs scientific methods is a genuine scientific enterprise cnanot be the right answer bcoz we are not talking about just scientific methods but "controlled experiments and statistical tests of clearly stated hypotheses to examine the questions it raises. " 4.d
1. In the twelth century the stained glass windows of Cathedrals were perceived less as works of art than as chronicles of ordinary lives of townspeople. Like modern magazines, they related stories of importent event, depicted prominent citizens in the society, and functioned as a record to preserve events for later generations.
Author of this passage makes her point by:

Ans should be 1) comparing something foreign... Is it?
