20. Despite the approach of winter, oil prices to indus-
trial customers are exceptionally low this year and
likely to remain so. Therefore, unless the winter is
especially severe, the price of natural gas to indus-
trial customers is also likely to remain low.
Which of the following, if true, provides the most
support for the conclusion above?
(A) Long-term weather forecasts predict a mild winter.
(B) The industrial users who consume most natural
gas can quickly and cheaply switch to using
oil instead.
(C) The largest sources of supply for both oil and
natural gas are in subtropical regions unlikely
to be affected by winter weather.
(D) The fuel requirements of industrial users of nat-
ural gas are not seriously affected by the
weather.
(E) Oil distribution is more likely to be affected by
severe winter weather than is the distribution
of natural gas.
The answer for this Q is (B). I do not understand why ? Can some one help explain ?

I'll try to make some reasoning...
A, C and E are out of question. Doubt is in B vs D.
Both talk about the 'demand' of natural gas. D is unrelated to the argument which suggests that price of gas will increase if weather becomes severe.
Now since it is a fact that oil prices will not increase, so the reason that gas prices also will not increase can be that users can switch to using oil instead of gas.
Hope it makes sense.

Ok the 1st statement here "Despite the approach of winter, oil prices to industrial customers are exceptionally low this year and likely to remain so." relates winter to oil prices.
The 2nd statement "Therefore, unless the winter is especially severe, the price of natural gas to industrial customers is also likely to remain low." makes a conclusion about price of natural gas.
So what can be the assumption? Prices of natural gas and oil are related somehow. To strengthen this argument, you have to find an option that does that. If users of oil could quickly start using natural gas, it shows that the 2 are related; their prices should vary similarly. Hence B is correct.
Q1. Left-handed persons suffer more frequently than do right-handed persons from certain immune disorders, such as allergies. Left-handers tend to have an advantage over the right-handed majority, however, on tasks controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain, and mathematical reasoning is strongly under the influence of the right hemisphere in most people.
If the information above is true, it best supports which of the following hypotheses?
(A) Most people who suffer from allergies or other such immune disorders are left-handed rather than right-handed.
(B) Most left-handed mathematicians suffer from some kind of allergy.
(C) There are proportionally more left-handers among people whose ability to reason mathematically is above average than there are among people with poor mathematical reasoning ability.
(D) If a left-handed person suffers from an allergy, that person will probably be good at mathematics.
(E) There are proportionally more people who suffer from immune disorders such as allergies than there are people who are left-handed or people whose mathematical reasoning ability is unusually good.
In c they have not even discussed about the immune disorders of the person, so how can that option be correct?
Q2. Mechanicorps newest product costs so little to make that it appears doubtful the company will be able to sell it without increasing the markup the company usually allows for profit: potential clients would simply not believe that something so inexpensive would really work. Yet Mechanicorps reputation is built on fair prices incorporating only modest profit margins.
The statements above, if true, most strongly support which of the following?
(A) Mechanicorp will encounter difficulties in trying to set a price for its newest product that will promote sales without threatening to compromise the companys reputation.
(B) Mechanicorp achieves large annual profits, despite small profits per unit sold, by means of a high volume of sales.
(C) Mechanicorp made a significant computational error in calculating the production costs for its newest product.
(D) Mechanicorps newest product is intended to perform tasks that can be performed by other devices costing less to manufacture.
(E) Mechanicorps production processes are designed with the same ingenuity as are the products that the company makes.
Q3. Damaged nerves in the spinal cord do not regenerate themselves naturally, nor even under the spur of nerve-growth stimulants. The reason, recently discovered, is the presence of nerve-growth inhibitors in the spinal cord. Antibodies that deactivate those inhibitors have now been developed. Clearly, then, nerve repair will be a standard medical procedure in the foreseeable future.
Which of the following, if true, casts the most serious doubt on the accuracy of the prediction above?
(A) Prevention of the regeneration of damaged nerves is merely a by-product of the main function in the human body of the substances inhibiting nerve growth.
(B) Certain nerve-growth stimulants have similar chemical structures to those of the antibodies against nerve-growth inhibitors.
(C) Nerves in the brain are similar to nerves in the spinal cord in their inability to regenerate themselves naturally.
(D) Researchers have been able to stimulate the growth of nerves not located in the spinal cord by using only nerve-growth stimulants.
(E) Deactivating the substances inhibiting nerve growth for an extended period would require a steady supply of antibodies.

Hi Sumit,
1. lets take the option one by one.
a) Author has just rephrased the first statement
b) It is also a kind of rephrase of first statement. As long as person is lefthanded, he has higher probability of afflicting with allergies - in this case this left handed person is a mathhematician
c) It actually uses the explaination/reason stated in the passage to prove itself. therefore it is correct (though it is not the perfect answer)
d) not at all correct. it means if a person has a allergy, it should be a good mathematician
e) it contradicts the passage meaning
2. correct option should be (A)...all other options seems to be out of scope or irrelevent.
3. i would go with (A) again.....if those subsantances have some other function in the body, deactivating these substances might result in some other disease. And hence, cannot be used as standard procedure for nerve repairing.
Other option are not relevant in this context.
Let me know the answers soon....
1. A recent survey by the economics department of an ivy league university revealed that increase in the salaries o f preachers are accompanied by increases in the nationwideaverage of rum consumption. From 1965 to 1970 preachers' salaries increased on the average of 15% and rum sales grew by 14.5%. From 1970 to 1975 average preachers' salaries rose by 17% and rum sales by 17.5%. From 1975 to 1980 rum sales expanded by only 8% and average preachers' salaries also grew by only 8%\
Which of the following is the most likely explaination for the findings cited in the paragraph?
A) When preachers have more disposable income, they tend to allocate that extra money to alcohol.
b) When preachers are paid more, they preach longer; and longer sermons tend to drive people to drink.
c) Since there were more preachers in the country, there was also more people: and larger populationwill consume greater quantities of liquor
d) The general standard of living increased from 1965 to 1980, which accounts for both increase in rum comnsumption and preachers' salaries
e) A consortium of rum importers carefully limited the increases in imports of rum during the test period cited.

I think Montaqes has given a good explanation but I couldn't resist answering.
1) Sumit pay close attention to the use of "however" this sights an advantage of left handers(not right handers).
Left handers---> have advantage over right handers on taskscontrolled by right Hemisphere---Right hemisphere ---better mathematical reasoning.
Now look at C. Hence the hypothesis
2) Customers don't believe in low price products. MechaniCorp reputaion fair price (low price here)
A.Price high ---threaten reputation, price low----- people don't buy. Hence the difficulty
3)To cast a doubt it should directly weaken one of the premise or state a disadvantage of the process
A. States a disadvantage so its has to be the Answer.

Hi Shiva,
1. Answer is (b) Because author pints out the goverment shud not take private land- because its written in the constitution. But, at the same time, points that it s the government that defines private property. in other words, author's point is that doesn't matter what is written in the constitution....government is the one that decides that whether to take a land or not..moreover (C) is out scope..as it talks abt the individual's liberty
2. perfect answer..u caught the young lady redhanded!!

Q)
Tsumi bats are a rare breed of omnivorous bat found only in highly temperate climates. Most Tsumi bats living in captivity develop endocrine imbalances from their normal zoo diets, which consist mostly of fruits and berries. The healthiest way to feed the bats, therefore , is to provide them primarily with nuts, grubs and vegetables and only minimum amount of fruits and berries.
Which of the following is doesn't reflect an assumption on which the above argument is based
1) Those who care for Tsumi bats in captivity should avoid feeding them diets that produce endocrine imbalances.
2) Tsumi bats living in captivity will not be malnourished on diets that contain minimum fruits and berries
3) Tsumi bats living in captivity will consume diets that consist of nuts, grubs and vegetables but no fruits or berries.
4) Tsumi bats living in captivity will be adequately nourished on a diet that consists primarily of nuts, grubs and vegetables
5) For Tsumi bats living in captivity, no health problem stemming from diets consisting mostly of nuts, grubs and vegetables would surpass in severity the problems associated with endocrine imbalances.
