Which of the following is doesn't reflect an assumption on which the above argument is based
1) Those who care for Tsumi bats in captivity should avoid feeding them diets that produce endocrine imbalances.
2) Tsumi bats living in captivity will not be malnourished on diets that contain minimum fruits and berries
3) Tsumi bats living in captivity will consume diets that consist of nuts, grubs and vegetables but no fruits or berries.
4) Tsumi bats living in captivity will be adequately nourished on a diet that consists primarily of nuts, grubs and vegetables
5) For Tsumi bats living in captivity, no health problem stemming from diets consisting mostly of nuts, grubs and vegetables would surpass in severity the problems associated with endocrine imbalances.
I'll go with 4 as well.

Mark these lines "world production of pepper has been running well below worldwide sales for three years" that means production is less than sales so this means there was stock that is coming down. So I'll go with D.

hey,

it's good that u r also contributing to this tread...but, i am not able to relate ur post to any recent question posted by others...plz use "quote" so that ur post will be useful to all of us
Q1.
Although aspirin has been proven to eliminate moderate fever associated with some illnesses, many doctors no longer routinely recommend its use for this purpose. A moderate fever stimulates the activity of the bodys disease-fighting white blood cells and also inhibits the growth of many strains of disease-causing bacteria.
If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by them?
(A) Aspirin, an effective painkiller, alleviates the pain and discomfort of many illnesses.
(B) Aspirin can prolong a patients illness by eliminating moderate fever helpful in fighting some diseases.
(C) Aspirin inhibits the growth of white blood cells, which are necessary for fighting some illnesses.
(D) The more white blood cells a patients body produces, the less severe the patients illness will be
(E) The focus of modern medicine is on inhibiting the growth of disease-causing bacteria within the body.
between 'b' & 'c' ?
Q2.
Because postage rates are rising, Home Decorator magazine plans to maximize its profits by reducing by one half the number of issues it publishes each year. The quality of articles, the number of articles published per year, and the subscription price will not change. Market research shows that neither subscribers nor advertisers will be lost if the magazines plan is instituted.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest evidence that the magazines profits are likely to decline if the plan is instituted?
(A) With the new postage rates, a typical issue under the proposed plan would cost about one-third more to mail than a typical current issue would.
(B) The majority of the magazines subscribers are less concerned about a possible reduction in the quantity of the magazines articles than about a possible loss of the current high quality of its articles.
(C) Many of the magazines long-time subscribers would continue their subscriptions even if the subscription price were increased.
(D) Most of the advertisers that purchase advertising space in the magazine will continue to spend the same amount on advertising per issue as they have in the past
(E) Production costs for the magazine are expected to remain stable.

For Q 1 I'll go with C
and For Q2 I''l go with D.
My take would be (3)...

Shiva, the problem is to find out the statement which doesn't relfect an assumption ;-)

Yes absolutely. As stupid as I can get

1)yes this can be an assumption
2)yes if it has to be the healthiest way then this should be an assumption
3)Yes if the argument should strong then it should assume that bats eat that diet first
4) not Adequately nourished doesn't mean they will be malnourished so looks like even without this the argument is ok
5)This has to be an assumption:)

Hey,

what's the OA for this....as fo now, we have two strong contenders..(C) and (D)..

I chose (C) because it talks about diets that contain nuts, grubs and vegetables but NO fruits or berries. While the passage says that diets should have minimul fruits and berries

1. The extent to which a society is really free can be gauged by its attitude toward artistic expression. freedom of expression can easily be voilated in even the most outwardly democratic of societies. When a government arts council withholds funding from a dance performance that its members deem "obscene", the voices of a few bureaucrats have in fact censored the work of the choreagrapher, therby committing the real obscenity of repression.

which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument above?

a) Members of government arts councils are screened to ensure that their beliefs reflect those of the majority.
b) The term "obscenity" has several different meanings that should not be used interchangeably for rhetorical effect.
c) Failing to provide financial support for a performance is not the same as actively preventing or inhibiting it.
d) The council's decision could be reversed if the performance were altered to conform to public standards of appropriateness.
e) the definition of abscenity is something on which most members of a society can agree.

A. Out of scope. Those of Majority is not of concern here
B. Irrelevant.Definition Obscenity is not on which the argument stands but rather on freedom of expression
C. Looks like the answer. Tells why author should not use this example in referring to violation of freedom of expression
D.Out of scope
E. Irrelevant like B
D is my Answer

Shiva,

Passage suggests that "council withholds the funding" ..it has not "failed" to provide funding...."failed" gives us the impression that council actually wanted to grant funds but failed - which is totally contradictory to what passage suggests...

I m totally confused in this...though it is the most logical statement to defy author's claim, the use of "failed" is not correct, what say u...

montaqes. True but I like to mention 2 points here
1) Failing to provide is not = preventing. it doesn't say that government failed. Also when something is withheld then it also means that it was earlier slated to go through. so if it withholds and funding doesn't go through then the government failed to fund (whatever may be the reason whether it had no money or because certain condition was not fulfilled) right?
2) No other option comes close. So we have to select the next best option an option which doesn't require us to assume too much

I would go with C with following reason - Not funding may sound like not promoting it but no one can say it's a repression which author is trying to say. Hence C

can someone help on this cr question?

Modern physicians often employ laboratory tests, in addition to physical examinations, in order to diagnose diseases accurately. Insurance company regulations that deny coverage for certain laboratory tests therefore decrease the quality of medical care provided to patients.
Which one of the following is an assumption that would serve to justify the conclusion above?
(A) Physical examinations and the uncovered laboratory tests together provide a more accurate diagnosis of many diseases than do physical examinations alone.
(B) Many physicians generally oppose insurance company regulations that, in order to reduce costs, limit the use of laboratory tests.
(C) Many patients who might benefit from the uncovered laboratory tests do not have any form of health insurance.
(D) There are some illnesses that experienced physicians can diagnose accurately from physicians examination alone.ďźˆA
(E) Laboratory tests are more costly to perform than are physical examinations.

The question asked for the assumption supporting conclusion and as per me it is "therefore decrease the quality of medical care provided to patients" . so the answer should be "E", but it is given as "A". can someone explain this?

Hi guys

Here's a CR question I couldn't attempt right. Someone plz help explain.

Simon observed that Internet users tend to recall best the first advertisement that they see when they get on the Internet and that they largely ignore other ads. Theodore responded by saying that Internet advertising is losing effectiveness because the ability of Internet users to recall the ads they see while using the Internet is decreasing. Which answer choice could synthesize these two assertions?

A) The average time an Internet user spends on line is increasing.

B) People are increasingly less likely to click through ads.

C) The average number of hours per day that people spend on the Internet is decreasing.

D) A few sites get nearly all Internet traffic.

E) Studies show that when listening to a speaker, people remember the first and last things they hear most clearly.

Correct answer is (A).

A survey of food preferences by the school cafeteria showed that casseroles, which were identical in every respect except the spice used, received very different ratings. Therefore, we can expect in the future to find no variation in the spice used.
Which assumption is a logical inference from the above passage?

A) If the preferred spice is not used, the buyer is usually willing to accept another spice.

B) Casseroles differ significantly from each other with respect to food value.

C) There is a single spice generally preferred in the casseroles tested.

D) Menu descriptions of this dish should list all the ingredient.

E) Shoppers give more emphasis to flavor than to price in food purchasing.

Option E tells a probable reason why companies don't give test coverage. But it is A which tells that by not giving test coverage, the insurance companies don't give proper medi-care.

Pranal,
Please do not post the answers in advance let everyone first take a look at the question and post their answers and explanations then we can discuss over it.

Requirement of doctors --- Physical examination + Laboratory tests
Conclusion ------- Insurance companies don't pay for laboratory tests---quality decreases
What can be the assumptions?
best could be patients don't go for Lab tests if insurance company deosn't pay but thats not given here so try to eliminate answers
A. States the modern Physician's requirement in a more general form
B.Out of scope opposing insurance company is not the concern here
C.Out of scope
D.Out of scope conclusion is about how the quality decreases id Lab tests are absent
E.Irrelevant assuming Lab costs are costly doesn't help us say patients will not go for it
Only A states something connected with the paragraph. But the question looks obscure .From where did u get it?A could have been a very good assumption if this part "in order to diagnose diseases accurately"was removed from " Modern physicians often employ laboratory tests, in addition to physical examinations, in order to diagnose diseases accurately"

I think C is the answer. If only variation is spice caused difference in ratings and in future if no variations in spice will be found it is logical that all of the casseroles will contain the same spice that got the best rating.
This the first time I am seeing a CR question which is asking about an assumption which is a logical inference :nervous: so far I have seen only questions asking either assumption or inference !!!!

E) Studies show that when listening to a speaker, people remember the first and last things they hear most clearly.

Correct answer is (A).

Hi Anish,

Answer to this question has to be (A) because all other options are just irrrelevant..a possible explaination of option (A) is as follows:
Simon states that only first add is effective and others are LARGELY ignored.
Theodore states that effectiveness of advertising is decreasing because ability to recall the interent adds (of the adds people see while browsing) is decreasing
If we are asked to club these two together, we need to retain the truth of both the assertions. Since, people are able to recall each and every "first" adds and "largely" ignore others, one way to decrease the efficiency of adds is to reduce the number of "first" adds and increase the number of "other" adds which are not going to be recalled by anyone. Hence, people have to surf longer to see more adds so that they can ignore more adds

Moreover, optionc(C) just says that duration of surfing is reduced. It doesn't mean that ability to recall the adds is affected.

Now you have explained it, C looks correct to me also.
Because of asking a diff thing, I also got totally confused...!

Thanks for helping.
