GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

Dude,

I am pasting the complete explanation given....from Kaplan CR's...

The (Implied) Conclusion: The masks prevent the tigers from attacking the people who wear them.

The Evidence: For the past few years many workers have worn these masks and none of them has been attacked by a tiger. We can't be sure that the masks are responsible for this situation. The tigers might no longer be attacking people at all. To strengthen the case for the masks we need evidence that the tigers are still attacking
humans, though not attacking humans wearing masks.

Evidence about other reserves (B) can't help us-it's just more of the same. Perhaps there were no tigers spotted (C) because they are no longer on the reserve.
In that case masks have nothing to do with worker safety. And maybe it's the singing (D), and not the masks, that has prevented the tiger attacks. Both (C) and (D) are au contraire choices. Tigers attacking deer (E) doesn't tell us anything about the tigers' behavior with regard to humans, much less humans with masks.

But still not able to understand the explanation.....

ok..so how does A affirm the argument that merely wearing masks are not attacked by tiger ??

A simply states that NOT wearing the mask =>tigers will attack.

From this we cant deduce that Wearing masks=> tigers will not attack.

and D may or may not be the right answer. but the rest are definitely wrong. That is why i chose D

anyways will give a thought again. :)

Neo
My pick wud be B...
Explaination
A) It is already known that people are attacked by tigers. This in no way support the argument
B) This clearly supports those people who advocate the use of mask as a way to avoid attacks
C) No relevance to the argument
D) This again takes the credit away from wearing masks as a way to avoid attacks.
E) No relevance..deer and people are not compared in the text

please psot the right answer

yes..on second thoughts... I feel B can be the right answer

but OA mentioned is A :argue:

Hi,

Here goes the original question again....Statements below, if true, would best support the argument of those who advocate the use of the mask

If we paraphrase this ...The statement should support the argument of those people who support the use of mask.....

To strengthen the argument (masks prevent the tigers from attacking the people who wear them)....If there are such cases where recently tigers are still attacking who do not wear the masks....I guess this in the sense tells us that Tigers are not attacking people who wear masks....which lends a support for the above argument...

Tried my best....Criticism welcomed.....

Hi.. can anyone plz help me with these questions? Thanks a ton!

Most radicals who argue for violent revolution and complete overthrow of our existing society have no clear idea of what will emerge from the destruction. They just assert that things are so bad now that any change would have to be a change for the better. But surely this is mistaken, for things might actually turn out to be worse.

The most effective point that can be raised against this argument is that the author says nothing about

(A) the manner in which the radicals might foment their revolution
(B)
the specific results of the revolution, which would be changes for the worse
(C)
the economic arguments the radicals use to persuade people to join in their cause
(D)
the fact that most people are really satisfied with the present system so that the chance of total revolution is very small
(E)
the loss of life and property that is likely to accompany total destruction of a society

Having just completed Introductory Logic 9, I feel competent to instruct others in the intricacies of this wonderful discipline. Logic is concerned with correct reasoning in the form of syllogisms. A syllogism consists of three statements, two of which are premises, the third of which is the conclusion. Here is an example:
MAJOR PREMISE: The American buffalo is disappearing.
MINOR PREMISE: This animal is an American buffalo.
CONCLUSION: Therefore, this animal is disappearing.
Once one has been indoctrinated into the mysteries of this arcane science, there is no statement one may not assert with complete confidence.

The reasoning of the author's example is most similar to that contained in which of the following arguments?
(A) Any endangered species must be protected; this species is endangered; therefore, it should be protected.
(B) All whales are mammals; this animal is a whale; therefore, this animal is a mammal
(C) Engaging in sexual intercourse with a person to whom one is not married is a sin; and since premarital intercourse is, by definition, without the institution of marriage, it is, therefore, a sin.
(D) There are 60 seconds in a minute; there are 60 minutes in an hour; therefore, there are 3600 seconds in an hour.
(E) Wealthy people pay most of the taxes; this man is wealthy; therefore, this man pays most of the taxes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

On a recent trip to the Mediterranean, I made the acquaintance of a young man who warned me against trusting Cretans. "Everything they say is a lie," he told me, "and I should know because I come from Crete myself." I thanked the fellow for his advice but told him in light of what he had said I had no intention of believing it.

Which of the following is most nearly analogous to the warning issued by the young man?

(A) An admission by a witness under cross-examination that he has lied
(B) A sign put up by the Chamber of Commerce of a large city alerting visitors to the dangers of pickpockets
(C) The command of a military leader to his marching troops to do an about-face
(D) A sentence written in chalk on a blackboard that says, "This sentence is false."
(E) The advice of a veteran worker to a newly hired person: "You don't actually have to work hard so long as you look like you're working hard."

1. Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent. In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this only when it is damaged in transit. Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent. If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?

A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is damaged in transit.

B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent.

C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed.

D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.

E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent.

2. A survey of food preferences by the school cafeteria showed that casseroles, which were identical in every respect except the spice used, received very different ratings. Therefore, we can expect in the future to find no variation in the spice used.
Which assumption is a logical inference from the above passage?

A) If the preferred spice is not used, the buyer is usually willing to accept another spice.

B) Casseroles differ significantly from each other with respect to food value.

C) There is a single spice generally preferred in the casseroles tested.

D) Menu descriptions of this dish should list all the ingredient.

E) Shoppers give more emphasis to flavor than to price in food purchasing.

3. The government of Zunimagua has refused to schedule free elections, release political prisoners, or restore freedom of speech; therefore, no more financial aid from the United States should be provided to Zunimagua.
Which of the following is an assumption made in the argument above?

A) Withdrawal of U.S. aid from Zunimagua will force a change in the policies of its government.

B) The people of Zunimagua would be better off if their present despotic government were overthrown.

C) The government of Zunimagua is dependent on continued U.S. aid for its existence.

D) U.S. aid should be given only to countries willing to adopt policies in line with U.S. interests and goals.

E) U.S. aid should be withdrawn from any country that refuses to operate its government along democratic lines.

1) correctly addressed mails = within 2 days, correctly addressed and damaged > 2 days . Total average > 3. We don't have any data on incorrectly addressed mails
A. Correctly addressed and damaged > 2 days even if a large proportion is damaged we don't know whether the overall average will be greater than 3 as it is possible that those mails may arrive within the 3 day time frame. And we have no data on other mail to make overall > 3 .So not sure.
B.No data. Out of scope
C.Nearly all correctly addressed mails = within 2 days, and overall > 3 if this is true.
D.I think time is important than proportion. A small number of incorrectly addressed mails may take longer time making the overall average > 3 so we can't be sure on this one I think
E. This cannot happen if overall > 3.
I think answer is C

2)Only factor affecting the ratings is variation in spice. The argument also states No variation in spice No difference in Casseroles . So preference of people is directly related to spice.
Only C can be inferred

3)
A. The paragraph doesn't state anything that supports this.
B.Out of scope.
C. There is nothing in the para that suggest that without aid it can't exist so this cannot be the assumption
D.Certain conditions are mentioned by the author and then he says since Zunimagua doesn't follow US should not provide aid. So this has to be the assumption.
E. Nothing about democratic lines is mentioned.
I think D is correct

People who have spent a lot of time in contact with animals often develop
1.animal-induced allergies, some of them quite serious. In a survey of current
employees in major zoos, about 30 percent had animal-induced allergies.
Based on this sample, experts conclude that among members of the general
population who have spent a similarly large amount of time in close contact
with animals, the percentage with animal-induced allergies is not 30 percent
but substantially more.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest grounds for the experts'
conclusion?
A. A zoo employee who develops a serious animal-induced allergy is very
likely to switch to some other occupation.
B. A zoo employee is more likely than a person in the general population
to keep one or more animal pets at home
C. The percentage of the general population whose level of exposure to
animals matches that of a zoo employee is quite small.
D. Exposure to domestic pets is, on the whole, less likely to cause animalinduced
allergy than exposure to many of the animals kept in zoos.
E. Zoo employees seldom wear protective gear when they handle animals
in their care.

2.Yeasts capable of leavening bread are widespread, and in the many centuries
during which the ancient Egyptians made only unleavened bread, such yeasts must
frequently have been mixed into bread doughs accidentally. The Egyptians,
however, did not discover leavened bread until about 3000 B. C. That discovery
roughly coincided with the introduction of a wheat variety that was preferable to
previous varieties because its edible kernel could be removed from the husk
without first toasting the grain.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest evidence that the two
developments were causally related?
A. Even after the ancient Egyptians discovered leavened bread and the techniques
for reliably producing it were well known, unleavened bread continued to be
widely consumed.
B. Only when the Egyptians stopped the practice grain were their stonelined
grain-toasting pits available for baking bread.
C. Heating a wheat kernel destroys its gluten, a protein that must be present in order
for yeast to leaven bread dough.
D. The new variety of wheat, which had a more delicate flavor because it was not
toasted, was reserved for the consumption of high officials when it first began
to be grown.
E. Because the husk of the new variety of wheat was more easily removed, flour
Made from it required less effort to produce.

Hi Ashish,

For the 1st question.....

A. Irrelevant to Argument
B. Strengthen the argument ...because if zoo employee keeps pets at home like general public then he is likely to get 30% more allergies ....
C. weakens the conclusion (exposure is small...allergies might be small)
D. weakens the conclusion that exposure to pets causes less allergy
E. Irrelevant since it talks about Zoo employees.....

Hence B is the correct answer......

1)Zoo employees have 30 % infection and author concludes normal people have more. So we should search for a factor which helps us to say normal people with similar exposure will indeed are more likely to get infected
A.Doesn't help to say anything about normal people
B.Ok but doesn't help us to conclude that normal people with similar exposure are more likely

2.
Whales originated in the freshwater lakes and rivers of ancient Asia about sixty
million years ago. Not until about ten million years later did species of whales
develop specialized kidneys enabling them to drink salt water. Although fossil
evidence shows that some early whale species that lacked such kidneys sometimes
swam in the Earths saltwater oceans, these species must have had to return frequently
to freshwater rivers to drink.
Which of the following is most strongly supported by the information given?
A. Fossils of whale species dating from between sixty million and fifty million
years ago will not be found on continents that were at the time separated from
ancient Asia by wide expanses of ocean.
B. Among whale fossils that date from later than about fifty million years ago,
none are fossils of whale species that drank only fresh water.
C. Fossils of whale species that drank fresh water will not be found in close
proximity to fossils of whale species that drank salt water.
D. The earliest whales that drank salt water differed from fresh-water-drinking
whales only in their possession of specialized kidneys.
E. Between sixty million and fifty million years ago, the freshwater lakes and
rivers in which whales originated were gradually invaded by salt water. (A)

3.
Critics of certain pollution-control regulations have claimed that
the money spent
over the last decade in order to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide and of
volatile organic compounds has been wasted.
The evidence they offer in support
of this claim might appear compelling: despite the money spent, annual emissions of
these pollutants have been increasing steadily. This evidence is far from adequate,
however, since
over the last decade a substantial number of new industrial
facilities that emit these pollutants have been built.
In the reasoning given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following
roles?
A. The first identifies a claim that the reasoning seeks to show is false; the second
is evidence that has been cited by others in support of that claim.
B. The first identifies a claim that the reasoning seeks to show is false; the second
is a position for which the reasoning seeks to provide support.
C. The first is a position that the reasoning contends is inadequately supported by
the evidence; the second is a position for which the reasoning seeks to provide
support.
D. The first is a position that the reasoning contends is inadequately supported by
the evidence; the second is evidence used to support the reasonings
contention.
E. The first is a position that the reasoning contends is inadequately supported by
the evidence; the second is evidence that has been used to support that
position.(D)

4.
In order to raise revenue, the federal government planned a tax amnesty program that
allows tax delinquents to pay all owed tax without added financial penalty. However,
economists projected that the federal government would collect a far lower percentage
of total tax owed by delinquents than did state governments implementing similar
programs.
Which of the following, if true, would most contribute to an explanation of the
economists projections?
A. Tax amnesty programs are only successful if they are widely publicized.
B. Most people who honestly pay their state tax are equally honest in paying their
federal tax.
C. Although federal tax delinquents usually must pay high financial penalties, the
states require far lower financial penalties.
D. The state tax rate varies considerably from state to state, but the federal tax is
levied according to laws which apply to citizens of all the states.
E. Unlike most federal tax delinquents, most state tax delinquents fail to pay state
tax because of an oversight rather than a decision not to pay.(E)

I have a query in the explaination for the first question. Option E states that zoo employees seldom use protective gear.Do you want to say that since "seldom" still refers to at times, thats why they have slightly less chances and thus less percentage as compared to general public?

Yes with seldom use zoo employees = 30 %
with no use at all > 30 %. And none of the other answers seemed close. Hey Ashish is this the OA to the question?
A certain cultivated herb is one of a group of closely related plants that thrive in soil with
high concentrations of metals that are toxic to most other plants. Agronomists studying
the herb have discovered that it produces large amounts of histidine, an amino acid that,
in test-tube solutions, renders these metals chemically inert. Possibly, therefore, the
herbs high histidine production is what allows it to grow in metal-rich soils, a hypothesis
that would gain support if ______.
A. histidine is found in all parts of the plantroots, stem, leaves, and flowers
B. the herbs high level of histidine production is found to be associated with an
unusually low level of production of other amino acids
C. others of the closely related group of plants are also found to produce histidine in

D. cultivation of the herb in soil with high concentrations of the metals will, over an

E. the concentration of histidine in the growing herb declines as the plant approaches
maturity

@ashishjha

All other options seem irrelevant except D which says cultivation of this herb over a long period of time makes the toxic soil suitable for other plants to grow which were not able to survive earlier in the soil as it contained toxic metals i.e. the herb has produced enough amino acid (histidine) to make all the metals inert.
This statement supports both the chemical science and gives solid reason as why this herb can grow in toxic soil.

Please let me know if D is the correct answer.

Though sucking zinc lozenges has been promoted as a treatment for the common cold,
research has revealed no consistent effect. Recently, however, a zinc gel applied nasally
has been shown to greatly reduce the duration of colds. Since the gel contains zinc in the
same form and concentration as the lozenges, the greater effectiveness of the gel must be
due to the fact that cold viruses tend to concentrate in the nose, not the mouth.
In order to evaluate the argument, it would be most helpful to determine which of the
following?
A. Whether zinc is effective only against colds, or also has an effect on other virally
caused diseases
B. Whether there are remedies that do not contain zinc but that, when taken orally,
can reduce the duration of colds
C. Whether people who frequently catch colds have a zinc deficiency
D. Whether either the zinc gel or the lozenges contain ingredients that have an
impact on the activity of the zinc
E. Whether the zinc gel has an effect on the severity of cold symptoms, as well as on
their duration

Astronomer: Observations of the Shoemaker-Levi comet on its collision course with
Jupiter showed that the comet broke into fragments before entering Jupiters atmosphere
23
in 1994, but they did not show how big those fragments were. Nevertheless, some
indication of their size can be inferred from spectrographic analyses of Jupiters outer
atmosphere. After the fragments entry, these analyses revealed unprecedented
traces of sulfur. The fragments themselves almost certainly contained no sulfur, but
astronomers believe that the cloud layer below Jupiters outer atmosphere does contain

sulfur. Since
sulfur would have seeped into the outer atmosphere if comet fragments
had penetrated this cloud layer, it is likely that some of the fragments were at least
large enough to have passed through Jupiters outer atmosphere without being burned up.
In the astronomers argument, the two portions in

A. The first is a claim that the astronomer seeks to show is true; the second
acknowledges a consideration that weighs against the truth of that claim.
B. The first is a claim that the astronomer seeks to show is true; the second provides
evidence in support of the truth of that claim.
C. The first and the second are each considerations advanced in support of the
conclusion of the argument.
D. The first provides evidence in support of the conclusion of the argument; the
second is that conclusion.
E. The first is a circumstance for which the astronomer seeks to provide an
explanation; the second acknowledges a consideration that weighs against the
explanation provided by the astronomer.

Rabbits were introduced to Numa Island in the nineteenth century. Overgrazing by the
enormous population of rabbits now menaces the islands agriculture. The government
proposes to reduce the population by using a virus that has caused devastating epidemics
23
in rabbit populations elsewhere. There is, however, a chance that the virus will infect the
bilby, an endangered native marsupial. The governments plan, therefore, may serve the
interests of agriculture but will clearly increase the threat to native wildlife.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?
