GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

As part of our program to halt the influx of illegal immigrants, the administration is proposing the creation of a national identity card. The card would be available only to U.S. citizens and to registered aliens, and all persons would be required to produce the card before they could be given a job. Of course, such a system holds the potential, however slight, for the abuse of civil liberties. Therefore, all personal information gathered through this system would be held strictly confidential, to be released only by authorized personnel under appropriate circumstances. Those who are in compliance with U.S. laws would have nothing to fear from the identity card system.
In evaluating the above proposal, a person concerned about the misuse of confidential information would be most interested in having the author clarify the meaning of which of the following phrases?
(A) "all persons" (line 5)
(B) "however slight" (line 7)
(C) "civil liberties" (line
(D) "appropriate circumstances" (line 11)ďźˆD
(E) "U.S. laws" (line 2)

At one time, European and Japanese companies tried to imitate their American rivals. Today, American appliance manufacturers import European scientists to lead their research staffs; American automakers design cars that mimic the styling of German, Italian, and French imports; and American electronics firms boast in their advertising of "Japanese-style" devotion to quality and reliability. In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.
Each of the following statements, if true, would help to support the claim above EXCEPT:
(A) An American camera company claims in its promotional literature to produce cameras "as fine as the best Swiss imports."
(B) An American maker of stereo components designs its products to resemble those of a popular Japanese firm.
(C) An American manufacturer of video games uses a brand name chosen because it sounds like a Japanese word.
(D) An American maker of televisions studies German-made televisions in order to adopt German manufacturing techniques.ďźˆE
(E) An American maker of frozen foods advertises its dinners as "Real European-style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs."

Studies of fatal automobile accidents reveal that, in the majority of cases in which one occupant of an automobile is killed while another survives, it is the passenger, not the driver, who is killed. It is ironic that the innocent passenger should suffer for the driver's carelessness, while the driver often suffers only minor injuries or none at all.
Which of the following is an assumption underlying the reasoning in the passage above?
(A) In most fatal automobile accidents, the driver of a car in which an occupant is killed is at fault.
(B) Drivers of automobiles are rarely killed in auto accidents.
(C) Most deaths in fatal automobile accidents are suffered by occupants of cars rather than by pedestrians.
(D) Auto safety experts should increase their efforts to provide protection for those in the passenger seats of automobiles.ďźˆA
(E) Automobile passengers sometimes play a contributing role in causing auto accidents

hi B states something that is already there in the question. The question says that in most cases, the passenger dies and driver survives, and points out irony that the passensger has to suffer coz of driver's mistake. So it assumes that mostly the accident is caused by the driver's fault.

Answer is E because frozen foods does not fall under "high technology"
When a new restaurant, Martin's Cafe, opened in Riverville last year, many people
predicted that business at the Wildflower Inn, Riverville's only other restaurant, would
suffer from the competition. Surprisingly, however, in the year since Martin's Cafe
opened, the average number of meals per night served at the Wildflower Inn has
increased significantly.
Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the increase?
A. Unlike the Wildflower Inn, Martin's Cafe serves considerably more meals on
weekends than it does on weekdays.
B. Most of the customers of Martin's Cafe had never dined in Riverville before this
restaurant opened, and on most days Martin's Cafe attracts more customers than it
can seat.
C. The profit per meal is higher, on average, for meals served at Martin's Cafe than
for those served at the Wildflower Inn.
D. The Wildflower Inn is not open on Sundays, and therefore Riverville residents
who choose to dine out on that day must either eat at Martin's Cafe or go to
neighboring towns to eat.
E. A significant proportion of the staff at Martin's Cafe are people who formerly
worked at the Wildflower Inn and were hired away by the owner of Martin's
Cafe.

I think the answer should be D as the Riverville is the only restaurant which is opened on sunday and thus can sell more number of meals on average.

Whats the OA ?

"since Martin's Cafe opened, the average number of meals per night served at the Wildflower Inn has increased significantly" So from all options D seems correct...The wildflower inn is not open on sundays, thus, reducing the nmber of days.

But I doubt because it has been mentioned" since Martin's cafe opened.." because D does nt mention whether wildflower inn was closed on sundays from earlier or after Martin's cafe opened..

Please post the official answer and explanation..

I second this..I too think the option is B.

D cannot be the answer because the wild flower inn was not closed on sundays after martin's cafe opened. So there is no reason for the average no of meals in wild flower to go up.

OA is B.
When i posted this question i dint get it but after giving some thought i did.

The question says "Avg number of meals served in Wildflower increased (compared to its own previous record) after Martin's Cafe opened." B explains a reason for this that most Martin Cafe's customers are new customers to Riverville (ie Wildflower has retained most of its old customers) and moreover Martin's attracts more customers that it could seat...so the excess people account for the increase in Wildflower;s customers.

Hope this makes sense.

hi Puys,
I was not satisfied with the answer for this question.
Someone pls explain...

The world's best coffee beans come from Colombia. The more Colombian beans in a blend of coffee, the better the blend, and no company purchases more Colombian beans than Kreemo Coffee, Inc. So it only stands to reason that if you buy a can of Kreemo's coffee, you're buying the best blended coffee available today.
The reasoning of the argument in the advertisement is flawed because it overlooks the possibility that
(A) the equipment used by Kreemo to blend and package its coffee is no different from that used by most other coffee producers
(B) not all of Kreemo's competitors use Colombian coffee beans in the blends of coffee they sell
(C) Kreemo sells more coffee than does any other company
(D) Kreemo's coffee is the most expensive blended coffee available today
(E) the best unblended coffee is better than the best blended coffee
