Pls post OAs

Yeah the OAs are E, B & D. Thanks for the explanation.

The value of a society must be judged on the total amount of satisfaction that exists within it. Clearly, the best society is the one that allows every individual the opportunity to unleash, and to seek to gratify his or her personal desires.

The argument above assumes which of the following?

A) People's desires and pursuits are mutually compatible and the gratification of one person's desires never excludes the gratification of another's.
B) Laws have been imposed only to ensure the even distribution of the available amount of group satisfaction.
C) Each individual has it within his or her power to gratify all of his or her personal desires, provided the state does not interfere.
D) The total amount of satisfaction within any given society would be the greatest if that society left all desires unfettered.
E) It is possible to erect a completely peaceful and harmonious society solely on the basis of individual power struggles.

I think C, what is the correct OA? I say C because if the first is the premise, the second statemtn say if society allows ppl will achive their desires and assumes that each ind has within its power to achieve his desires. which perhaps in not true. Maybe the state needs to help ppl in achieveing there desires.

To me A seems incorrect...not quite actually ...but C says each person and then all desires, which need not be true, it should probably be most and many... so perhaps A is incorrect. But my initial choice was C.

Whats the OA?

The OA is (A).

1. A private bus company gained greater profits and provided bus service to the area at lower fares by running buses more frequently and stimulating greater ridership. Hoping to continue these financial trends, the company plans to replace all older buses with new, larger buses, including some double-decker buses,.
The plan of the bus company as described above assumes all of the following EXCEPT
(A) the demand for bus service in the companys area of service will increase in the future
(B) increased efficiency and revenues will compensate for any new expenses the company incurs
(C) the new buses will be sufficiently reliable to ensure the company a net financial gain once they are in place
(D) driving the new buses will be no more difficult than driving the buses they are to replace
(E) the larger, double-decker buses will not face obstacles such as height and weight restrictions in the bus companys area of service

2. A newly discovered disease is thought to be caused by a certain bacterium. However, recently released data notes that the bacterium thrives in the presence of a certain virus, implying that it is actually the virus that causes the new disease.
Which of the following pieces of evidence would most support the datas implication?
(A) In the absence of the virus, the disease has been observed to follow infection by the bacterium.
(B) The virus has been shown to aid the growth of bacterium, a process which often leads to the onset of the disease.
(C) The virus alone has been observed in many cases of the disease.
(D) In cases where the disease does not develop, infection by the bacterium is usually preceded by infection by the virus.
(E) Onset of the disease usually follows infection by both the virus and the bacterium.

3. Critics of sales seminars run by outside consultants point out that since 1987, revenues of vacuum cleaner companies whose employees attended consultant-led seminars were lower than revenues of vacuum cleaner companies whose employees did not attend such seminars. The critics charge that for vacuum cleaner companies, the sales seminars are ill conceived and a waste of money.
Which of the following, if true, is the most effective challenge to the critics of sales seminars?
(A) Those vacuum cleaner companies whose sales were highest prior to 1987 are the only companies that did not send employees to the seminars.
(B) Vacuum cleaner companies that have sent employees to sales seminars since 1987 experienced a greater drop in sales than they had prior to 1987.
(C) The cost of vacuum cleaner sales seminars run by outside consultants has risen dramatically since 1987.
(D) The poor design of vacuum cleaner sales seminars is not the only reason for their ineffectiveness.
(E) Since 1987, sales of vacuum cleaners have risen twenty percent.

4. Economies in which a high percentage of resources are invested in research and development show greater growth in the long run than do those in which resources are channeled into consumption. Japanese workers spend a higher percentage of their income investing in research and development than do American workers.
To grow as fast as Japan has in the past three decades, the United States must change the tax code in order to encourage savings and investment and discourage debt.
Which of the following, if true, tends to weaken the argument?
(A) Japanese research is more focused on consumers than is research by American firms.
(B) Class mobility, highly valued in American culture, is encouraged by a growing rather than a stagnant economy.
(C) Studies have shown that countries with high consumption rates prosper in the short run.
(D) Proposed changes to the tax code could involve strict limits on the deductability of interest, and increased allowance for research.
(E) Because a decreasing percentage of the United States is under 40, an age when savings are traditionally low, the savings rate will increase without changes to the tax code.

I had a really difficult time choosing b/w A & D.

Passage says "Best society ==>Total amt of satisfaction within it"
It also says "Best society = which allows all individuals to gratify his/her desires"

So doesnt the passage assume that "Total amt of satidfaction is greatest if all individuals are allowed to seek the gratification of their desires", which is wht option D says.

I know that option A is also assumed. But how do u choose b/w them ?

Many small roads do not have painted markings along their edges. Clear edge markings would make it easier for drivers to see upcoming curves and to judge the car's position on the road, particularly when visibility is poor, and would therefore seem to be a useful contribution to road safety. However, after Greatwater County painted edge markings on all its narrow, winding roads the annual accident rate along these roads actually increased slightly.

which of the following if true, most helps to explain the increase in accident rate?

a) Greatwater County has an unusually high proportion of narrow, winding roads.
b) In bad weather it can be nearly as difficult for drivers to see the road as it is at night.
c) Prior to the painting of edge markings, Greatwater County's narrow, winding roads already had a somewhat higher accident rate than other Greatwater County roads.
d) Many of the accidents on narrow, winding roads involve a single vehicle veering off the road, rather than the collision of two vehicles.
e) After the markings were painted on the roads, many drivers who had gone out of their way to avoid driving on those roads at night no longer did so.

E . many drivers who had gone out of their way to avoid driving on those roads at night....

Many drivers hardly used those roads earlier hence less no of accidents on those roads. Now with increased users, accidents increased after marking these roads.
*arch* Says
OA is (E). Can someone plz help?!

The answer of course is E.

The question is asking for a reason why the accidents increased after the edges of the raods were marked yellow. This is a paradox.
The markings must have increased the safety, but sthg else has increased teh accidents. What can it be ? Sthg like the traffic on the road increased after adding the safety...or drivers getting over-confident cos of safety or the like.

Choice E correctly identifies this by saying tht those night drivers who used to avoid the particular road began using it cos of its added safety. And hence accidents increased !

Doesnt it make purrrrfect sense ?

Jhawarster,

You posted a set of questions and havent given the OA's yet. Waiting for those (2nd set).....

My pick would be A
The argument states that if individuals are allowed to gratify their personal desires, then total amount of satisfaction would be most in the society and thus will be valuable. However, it might be the case that one person's desire may hamper/obstruct some other one's desire.
Option A highlights this and is the correct assumption.

Intially I came to D and later found that it states what is there in the passage..And Finally came to A..
A should be the answer..What's OA??
*arch* Says
OA is (E). Can someone plz help?!

Ans should be E because it shows the possibility that the percentage of accidents is either same or lower because the number of ppl who drive has also increased ,thereby indicating that the increase in accident rate is justifiable. this explains the paradox.
hope this helps...

kingcat,
I agree with the answers for 3 and 4,but I chose 1.C and 2.B.
In your answer for 1.D,
driving the new buses will be no more difficult than driving the buses they are to replace
would be true because the buses are new and it must be easy to drive them than the old ones.
Also for 2. I had to choose between B and C.
Can you tell me why you didn't choose B?

hey this is chhavi from delhi
can anyone tell me what will be the answer for the below and y

Mr. Janeck: I don't believe Stevenson will win the election for governor. Few voters are willing to elect a businessman with no political experience to such a responsible public office.
Ms. Siuzdak: You're wrong. The experience of running a major corporation is a valuable preparation for the task of running a state government.
M. Siuzdak's response shows that she has interpreted Mr. Janeck's remark to imply which of the following?
(A) Mr. Janeck considers Stevenson unqualified for the office of governor.
(B) No candidate without political experience has ever been elected governor of a state.
(C) Mr. Janeck believes that political leadership and business leadership are closely analogous.
(D) A career spent in the pursuit of profit can be an impediment to one's ability to run a state government fairly.ďźˆA
(E) Voters generally overestimate the value of political experience when selecting a candidate.

Which of the following best completes the passage below?
One tax-reform proposal that has gained increasing support in recent years is the flat tax, which would impose a uniform tax rate on incomes at every level. Opponents of the flat tax say that a progressive tax system, which levies a higher rate of taxes on higher-income taxpayers, is fairer, placing the greater burden on those better able to bear it. However, the present crazy quilt of tax deductions, exemptions, credits, and loopholes benefits primarily the high-income taxpayer, who is consequently able to reduce his or her effective tax rate, often to a level below that paid by the lower-income taxpayer. Therefore, ______
(A) higher-income taxpayers are likely to lend their support to the flat-tax proposal now being considered by Congress
(B) a flat-tax system that allowed no deductions or exemptions would substantially increase actual government revenues
(C) the lower-income taxpayer might well be penalized by the institution of a flat-tax system in this country
(D) the progressive nature of our present tax system is more illusory than realďźˆD
(E) the flat tax would actually be fairer to the lower-income taxpayer than any progressive tax system could be
