GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

hey can some one explain this to me....the oa is A

In Patton City, days are categorized as having heavy rainfall (more than two inches),
moderate rainfall (more than one inch, but no more than two inches), light rainfall (at
least a trace, but no more than one inch), or no rainfall. In 1990, there were fewer days
with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall, yet total rainfall for the
year was 20 percent higher in 1990 than in 1910.
If the statements above are true, then it is also possible that in Patton City
A. the number of days with heavy rainfall was lower in 1990 than in 1910
B. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was the same
in 1990 as in 1910
C. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was higher in
1990 than in 1910
D. the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990
was more than twice what it had been in 1910
E. the average amount of rainfall per month was lower in 1990 than in 1910

days of light and moderate rainfall have been reduced as compared to 1910.still,total rainfall is higher,so,either the number of days with heavy rain should be more or the quantity of rain must be more.as the question mentions, which of these is "possible",A fits the bill,as it surely is possible.

other options are wrong as can be verified.so,another reason for A to be through.

tricky one though πŸ˜ƒ

Hu Puys have a look at the OG question. Its helpful if someone can come out with a method for such questions-
It is true that it is against international law to sell plutonium to countries that do not yet have nuclear weapons.
But if United States companies do not do so, companies in other countries will.
Which of the following is most like the argument above in its logical structure?
(A) It is true that it is against the police departments policy to negotiate with kidnappers. But if the police want
to prevent loss of life, they must negotiate in some cases.
(B) it is true that it is illegal to refuse to register for military service. But there is a long tradition in the United
States of conscientious objection to serving in the armed forces.

(C) It is true that it is illegal for a government official to participate in a transaction in which there is an apparent
conflict of interest. But if the facts are examined carefully, it will clearly be seen that there was no actual conflict
of interest in the defendants case.
(D) It is true that it is against the law to burglarize peoples homes. But someone else certainly would have
burglarized that house if the defendant had not done so first.
(E) It is true that company policy forbids supervisors to fire employees without two written warnings. But there
have been many supervisors who have disobeyed this policy.

I take that answer is D.

Logic: Y is forbidden. But if X doesn't do Y, then Z will do Y.

Y: to sell plutonium to countries that do not yet have nuclear weapons.
X: US

(Even if X abides the rule Y, there's chance that Z will not)

now check the options.

A. Y: to negotiate with kidnappers; condition after if should be 'then somebody else will negotiate' e.g. Ralatives of kidnapped person. but that's not the case here so this isn't the same logic.

B. Y: to refuse to register for military service
Again doesn't fit the bill

C. Y:to participate in a transaction in which there is an apparent conflict of interest
Check last part. not in line with logic in original argument.

D. Y: to burglarize peoples homes
But someone else, if not defendant, might have burglarized the house.

This is like saying ' It is true that it is against the law to burglarize peoples homes. but clearly if defendant hasn't done so, somebody else must have.
this is similar to original argument.

E. to fire employees without two written warnings.
next sentence states an event that has already happened, not something that might happen.

I found D more convincing after first read itself. Hope answer is correct.

Nice explanation with the right approach to a right answer.
It has clear my concept too to approach such questions.
Hi Vikas , I will request you to post the answers for your previous questions
days of light and moderate rainfall have been reduced as compared to 1910.still,total rainfall is higher,so,either the number of days with heavy rain should be more or the quantity of rain must be more.as the question mentions, which of these is "possible",A fits the bill,as it surely is possible.

tricky one though :)

Are you not saying the reverse of what stated in option A?
Premise: Six months or so after getting a video recorder, many early buyers apparently lost interest in obtaining videos to watch on it.

Conclusion: But clearly, once the market for video recorders is saturated, businesses distributing videos face hard times.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion above?

Assumption: The trend observed from early sale of video recorder will continue to be true in future.

Now any argument that finds the flaw in assumption will weaken the conclusion.

That's what D does by stating the fact that early buyers' behavior doesn't not represent that of masses.

Hope this help.

Some more from my side. Pls post explanations for the benefit of everyone.

1. The cost of transatlantic airfare has nearly doubled over the past five years, yet airlines are doing a booming business. Clearly, people today have more money to spend on vacations than they did five years ago.

All of the following, if true, would weaken the argument above EXCEPT:

(A) Most people buying transatlantic tickets today use them for business trips, so airfare is refunded by their companies.
(B) There are fewer airlines in existence today than five years ago.
(C) People are taking shorter vacations and staying in cheaper hotels than they used to.
(D) Crossing the Atlantic by ship requires more time than most people can afford.
(E) Domestic airline flights have seen a steady increase in passengers.

2. Archaeologists have recently found, in various grave sites in the Mexican state of Veracruz, small ceramic animals with attached wheels. At first, this find might seem to discredit the belief that the heel and its uses were unknown in pre-Colombian culture. On reflection, however, it would seem that the discovery actually bears out this belief. To be familiar with these toys and yet not to apply the principle of the wheel to daily tasks such as carting, transportation, and pottery making must indicate a lack of understanding of the wheel and its potential benefits.

Which of the following best expresses the argument made in the passage above?

(A) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had understood the principle of the wheel, they would not have attached wheels to ceramic animals.
(B) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had understood the principle of the wheel, they would have adapted it to everyday use.
(C) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had uses for the wheel in their everyday lives, they would have adapted the idea of the wheel from the wheeled ceramic figures.
(d) The pre-Colombian people of Veracruz must have known of the wheel and its uses because they attached wheels to ceramic animals.
(E) Since the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz did not know of the wheel or its uses, the ceramic animals found in the grave sites must be the remains of later cultures.

3. The conflict between an artists work and the context in which it is placed is a traditional problem in aesthetics. Recent exhibits have given it a new urgency. Too often a painters canvases have been hung in an improper context because the gallery managers have not understood what the painter envisioned as the works proper environment.

As an attempt to solve the problem described above, it would be most reasonable to
(A) bring artists and gallery managers into closer contact, so as to increase the artists input into the way the exhibit is held
(B) provide brochures at the exhibit that describe the artist and how he or she intended the exhibit to look
(C) redesign galleries so that their dcor contains nothing that would distract the audience from the works themselves
(D) provide a uniform environment for all the works in an exhibition so that they appear within the same context
(E) instruct gallery managers in the fine points of aesthetic theory so that they will be able to tell what, if anything, a painting means

OAs

1. E
2. B
3. A

I understand 1 and 2, but not really convinced about 3rd one. I chose E for 3.

if there are fewer days of light and moderate rainfall in 1990 when compared to 1910, and still the amount of rainfall in 1990 is 20% more when compared with that of 1910, then that means the amount of rain is more in 1990 than 1910.

So according to this E is wrong as the monthly average was lower in 1990 than in 1910
D this does not makes it clear why rainfall in 1990 is 20% more
C this is also not for sure as the some rainfall, but no more than two inches(means light and moderate rain) is contradicting with premises.
B again contradicting with premises same as C
A can be true as the amount of rainfall on those can differ and the total amount can result in 20% more in 1990.
Let me know if i am wrong.

What do you guys say?

What is the source of questions and answers ,Vikas?I will request you to explain the answer for first , why E?Dont u think we have to explain why the passengers increased despite price hike?
And for the Third one I was confused between A nd D , so I think A may be the right answer.

I still cant understand the logic.I think It has to be C , as it says that the rainfall has increased.

1. Plant Y thrives in environments of great sunlight and very little moisture. Desert X is an
environment with constant, powerful sunlight, and almost no moisture. Although Plant Y thrives
in the areas surrounding Desert X, it does not exist naturally in the desert, nor does it survive
long when introduced there.

Which of the following, if true, would be most useful in explaining the apparent discrepancy above?

(A) Desert Xs climate is far too harsh for the animals that normally feed on Plant Y.
(B) For one week in the fall, Desert X gets consistent rainfall.
(C) The environment around Desert X is ideally suited to the needs of Plant Y.
(D) Due to the lack of sufficient moisture, Desert X can support very little plant life.
(E) Plant Y cannot survive in temperatures as high as those normally found in Desert X.

2. The World Automobile Association (WAA) publishes a list of the Best and Worst Drivers of
the World, ranking the drivers of every nation according to the number of traffic deaths per
mile driven in that country.

Each of the following, if true, would by itself provide a logical objection to using the WAAs ranking as a representation of the quality of drivers in each nation EXCEPT:

(A) The roads in some countries are in bad repair and are therefore more dangerous than roads in other countries.
(B) The average driver in industrialized countries can afford to maintain his or her car in better condition than can the average driver in less developed countries.
(C) Some countries contain hundreds of thousands of miles of road while other countries contain relatively few miles of road.
(D) Minor accidents that would cause little injury in many countries are often fatal when they occur in extremely mountainous countries.
(E) Because of differences in national economies, the average car in some countries contains many more passengers than does the average car in other countries.

3. The population increase over a given year is always calculated as a percentage of the previous years population, with a population decrease being recorded as a negative increase. In 1990 Essex County and Union County both experienced a population increase of more than 3 percent. In 1991 Essex County and Union County both experienced a population increase of 1.5 percent. In 1992 Union County
experienced a negative increase in population of 1.7 percent. Essex County had 209,100 residents in 1990 and 209,000 residents in 1992.

If the information above is accurate, which of the following must be true?
(A) Both counties experienced positive population increases in the years 1990 and 1991, yet both experienced negative population increases in 1992.
(B) In 1992 more people moved from Union County to Essex County than moved from
Essex County to Union County.
(C) In 1990 there were more people living in Union County than in Essex County, but in 1992 there were more people living in Essex County than in Union County.
(D) Both counties experienced negative population increases in the years 1990 and 1991, yet both experienced positive population increases in 1992.
(E) Both counties experienced positive population increases in the years 1990 and 1991, yet while Essex County experienced a positive increase in 1992, Union County had a negative increase.

4. Although statistics and definitions are inexact, educated guesses put the number of refugees worldwide at well over 10 million. The overwhelming majority prefer to return to their native land than to emigrate to a foreign one. The millions of refugees from Afghanistan are sufficient proof: Despite the toll the war and subsequent fighting have taken on their country, very few have applied for permission to emigrate.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument above?
(A) Most refugees are as reluctant to emigrate as are the refugees from Afghanistan.
(B) The refugees from Afghanistan fled what they considered political oppression rather than economic disaster.
(C) Most of the children born to refugees prefer to remain in their adoptive country rather than return to the land their parents left.
(D) Although refugees flee their homes for a variety of different reasons, the overwhelming majority are looking for improved living conditions.
(E) The number of refugees worldwide has risen dramatically over the last ten years.

5. Recent statistics make it seem unlikely that the total consumption of electricity determines its
cost to individual consumers. Recent increases in total consumption, especially during the hot
summer months, have sometimes been accompanied by a decrease in the cost per unit
and at other times by an increase.

Which of the following positions is best supported by the information presented above?
(A) It must be the case that the cost of electricity to consumers is what determines the total consumption.
(B) Even though a correlation exists between the total consumption of electricity and its
cost to consumers, no causal relation exists.
(C) Further investigation into the way these statistics were gathered is certainly called
for.
(D) The cost of electricity depends upon something other than the total consumption of electricity.
(E) The cost-per-unit of electricity to consumers is dependent on the total electricity consumption.

This is a classic example of causation type of reasonings. Here the researcher claims that the immune system decides mental health(as well as physical). Now, for this to be true his assumption for the causal connection between immune system and mental health has to be true. It could be completely the reverse if the mental health affetcted the immune activity----THAT IS WHAT THE RESEARCHER ASSUMES IS NOT HAPPENING--Hence the Answer is D which says " Mental illness does not cause people's immune-system activity to decrease."

I still cant understand the logic.I think It has to be C , as it says that the rainfall has increased.

C cannot be correct as in premise its given:
No. of days for light rainfall(0-1 inches) is less in 1990 than in 1910
No. of days for moderate rainfall(1-2 inches) is less in 1990 than in 1910
So according to C, no. of days for Light + moderate is more in 1990 than in 1910, which is contradicting.

2. after second thought the answer should be D:wow:

3.Premise (given):
  1. In 1990 Essex County and Union County both experienced a population increase of more than 3 percent
  2. In 1991 Essex County and Union County both experienced a population increase of 1.5 percent
  3. In 1992 Union County experienced a negative increase in population of 1.7 percent
  4. Essex County had 209,100 residents in 1990 and 209,000 residents in 1992
that means that the essex even after and increase in population after 1990 and 1991 ended up with less population, means that it had a negative growth in population. So that is only true in A
