GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

1. E
Explanation: If the purpose of those organizations is to serve the interests ONLY their members....then defntly these organizations donot voice out the economically disadvantaged ppl.
{ Initially i chose B...as that sounded more appropriate .but a Closer at E convinced me}

2.D
Explanation: The question stem asks to weaken the claim that profit is the only interest of audio market and that digital tapes are not available anyhow.
if could say that there is something else that hinders the commercial distribution of digital tapes(although they are better than CDs) ...It is implied that Audio market doesnt incline to take decisions based on profits....

Hope this helps!! πŸ˜ƒ

Hi Puys,

Could you help me with the Answers & Explanations for the following?

1. The fact that several of the largest senior citizens organizations are constituted almost exclusively of middle-class elderly people has led critics to question the seriousness of those organizations commitment to speaking out on behalf of the needs of economically disadvantaged elderly people.
Which of the following generalizations, if true, would help to substantiate the criticism implicit in the statement above?
(A) The ideology of an organization tends reflect the traditional political climate of its locale.
(B) The needs of disadvantaged elderly people differ in some ways from those of other disadvantaged groups within contemporary society.
(C) Organized groups are better able to publicize their problems and seek redress than individuals acting alone.
(D) Middle-class elderly people are more likely to join organizations than are economically disadvantaged elderly people.
(E) People usually join organizations whose purpose is to further the economic, political, or social interests of their members.

Question 1.
Assumption-based Argument: Id the Assumption

To address this type of question we should find the assumption.
To find the assumption we must look at teh GAP between the conclusion and the premises.

Premises:
Several of the largest senior citizens organizations are constituted almost exclusively of middle-class elderly people.

Conclusion:
Critics question the seriousness of the organizations commitment to speaking out on behalf of the needs of economically disadvantaged elderly people

So the gap here is one between (a) the uniform middle-class nature of the organization and (b) the ability to serve the economically disadvantaged.

Assumption:
Because there are no 'poor' people in the organization, the organization cannot serve the 'poor.'
or
no poor people = not serve poor

Only Answer B. Resembles this assumption.

Thanks Hashim,

I had used same reasoning. Why people join Organizations is irrelevant to the conclusion that questions Org's commitment to speak out on behalf of poor.

Thx.

Cheers,

In order to withstand tidal currents, juvenile horseshoe crabs frequently burrow in the sand. Such burrowing discourages barnacles from clinging to their shells. When fully grown, however, the crabs can readily withstand tidal currents without burrowing, and thus they acquire substantial populations of barnacles. Surprisingly, in areas where tidal currents are very weak, juvenile horseshoe crabs are found not to have significant
barnacle populations, even though they seldom burrow.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the surprising finding?

A. Tidal currents do not themselves dislodge barnacles from the shells of horseshoe crabs.
B. Barnacles most readily attach themselves to horseshoe crabs in areas where tidal currents are weakest.
C. The strength of the tidal currents in a given location varies widely over the course of a day.
D. A very large barnacle population can significantly decrease the ability of a horseshoe crab to find food.
E. Until they are fully grown, horseshoe crabs shed their shells and grow new ones several times a year.

Choice E. This is the only choice that gives alternative evidence for less barnacles.

Answer: E

Population increase is not just a function of burrowing, but there are other reasons Juvenile crabs don't come out to be part of the barnacles populations. E explains gives this reason so E is correct.

Right Guys- E is the answer.

Six months or so after getting a video recorder, many early buyers apparently lost interest in obtaining videos to watch on it. The trade of businesses selling and renting videos is still buoyant, because the number of homes with video recorders is still growing. But clearly, once the market for video recorders is saturated, businesses distributing videos face hard times.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion above?
A The market for video recorders would not be considered saturated until there was one in 80 percent of homes.
B Among the items handled by video distributors are many films specifically produced as video features.
C Few of the early buyers of video recorders raised any complaints about performance aspects of the new product.
D The early buyers of a novel product are always people who are quick to acquire novelties, but also often as quick to tire of them.
E In a shrinking market, competition always intensifies and marginal businesses fail.

Answer: D

Argument rests on the feedback of early buyers. If we were to know that this premise is not accurate representation of a phenomenon then conclusion will be weakened.

Am I correct?

Cheers

d attitude of d early buyers indicates dat they tire easily in 6 months. isnt dat wat is being affirmed in D??

guys!!! i think it shud be A

coz we have to find a statement which weakens the conclusion...

Conclusion is that when once the market for video recorders is saturated, businesses distributing videos face hard times.

so the market is not considered saturated untill 80% homes have video recorder...

i myt nt be correct... just trying

the answer is D..

But even D doesn't seem to fully make sense. I am not sure how D weakens the conclusion. D just provides an explanation for why people leave, but how does it weaken the conclusion that sales will fall off?

well guys dats de OA!! guess vikas is de only one who got it rite!!! vikas cud yu be a bit more clear in ur explanation!!

Premise: Six months or so after getting a video recorder, many early buyers apparently lost interest in obtaining videos to watch on it.

Conclusion: But clearly, once the market for video recorders is saturated, businesses distributing videos face hard times.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion above?

Assumption: The trend observed from early sale of video recorder will continue to be true in future.

Now any argument that finds the flaw in assumption will weaken the conclusion.

That's what D does by stating the fact that early buyers' behavior doesn't not represent that of masses.

Hope this help.

1. The cost of transatlantic airfare has nearly doubled over the past five years, yet airlines are doing a booming business. Clearly, people today have more money to spend on vacations than they did five years ago.

All of the following, if true, would weaken the argument above EXCEPT:

(A) Most people buying transatlantic tickets today use them for business trips, so airfare is refunded by their companies.
(B) There are fewer airlines in existence today than five years ago.
(C) People are taking shorter vacations and staying in cheaper hotels than they used to.
(D) Crossing the Atlantic by ship requires more time than most people can afford.
(E) Domestic airline flights have seen a steady increase in passengers.

2. Archaeologists have recently found, in various grave sites in the Mexican state of Veracruz, small ceramic animals with attached wheels. At first, this find might seem to discredit the belief that the heel and its uses were unknown in pre-Colombian culture. On reflection, however, it would seem that the discovery actually bears out this belief. To be familiar with these toys and yet not to apply the principle of the wheel to daily tasks such as carting, transportation, and pottery making must indicate a lack of understanding of the wheel and its potential benefits.

Which of the following best expresses the argument made in the passage above?

(A) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had understood the principle of the wheel, they would not have attached wheels to ceramic animals.
(B) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had understood the principle of the wheel, they would have adapted it to everyday use.
(C) If the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz had uses for the wheel in their everyday lives, they would have adapted the idea of the wheel from the wheeled ceramic figures.
(d) The pre-Colombian people of Veracruz must have known of the wheel and its uses because they attached wheels to ceramic animals.
(E) Since the pre-Colombian people of Veracruz did not know of the wheel or its uses, the ceramic animals found in the grave sites must be the remains of later cultures.

3. The conflict between an artists work and the context in which it is placed is a traditional problem in aesthetics. Recent exhibits have given it a new urgency. Too often a painters canvases have been hung in an improper context because the gallery managers have not understood what the painter envisioned as the works proper environment.

As an attempt to solve the problem described above, it would be most reasonable to
(A) bring artists and gallery managers into closer contact, so as to increase the artists input into the way the exhibit is held
(B) provide brochures at the exhibit that describe the artist and how he or she intended the exhibit to look
(C) redesign galleries so that their dcor contains nothing that would distract the audience from the works themselves
(D) provide a uniform environment for all the works in an exhibition so that they appear within the same context
(E) instruct gallery managers in the fine points of aesthetic theory so that they will be able to tell what, if anything, a painting means

hey can some one explain this to me....the oa is A

In Patton City, days are categorized as having heavy rainfall (more than two inches),
moderate rainfall (more than one inch, but no more than two inches), light rainfall (at
least a trace, but no more than one inch), or no rainfall. In 1990, there were fewer days
with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall, yet total rainfall for the
year was 20 percent higher in 1990 than in 1910.
If the statements above are true, then it is also possible that in Patton City
A. the number of days with heavy rainfall was lower in 1990 than in 1910
B. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was the same
in 1990 as in 1910
C. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was higher in
1990 than in 1910
D. the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990
was more than twice what it had been in 1910
E. the average amount of rainfall per month was lower in 1990 than in 1910

Argument is-Biz increasing despite increased fairs.
Option B contradicts this by saying that most people who use such flights are not concerned by Airfare.
B-How many airlines may be earlier there were 100 and now 99.
c.irrelevant
D.What about two years before?
E.What is the rate?

Point mentioned in the last line is-must indicate a lack of understanding of the wheel and its potential benefits.
Only Option B does that.
A.Why will not attach?
C.Why the idea would have come from the ceremic wheel? Its the concept of wheel which is important.
D.Oposite of what mentioned.
E.Against what is mentioned.

I will go for D.
A.A close one but what if gall manager does not agree, artist not available.
B.Will confuse people and what is the importance of the artist's work .
C.Will create more prob in the given situation.
E.what about their learning capacities?
