Vorlands government is planning a nationwide ban on smoking in restaurants. The objection that the ban would reduce restaurants revenues is ill founded. Several towns in Vorland enacted restaurant smoking restrictions five years ago. Since then, the amount the government collects in restaurant meal taxes in those towns has increased 34 percent, on average, but only 26 percent elsewhere in Vorland. The amount collected in restaurant meal taxes closely reflects restaurants revenues. Which of the following, if true, most undermines the defense of the governments plan?
A. When the state first imposed a restaurant meal tax, opponents predicted that restaurants revenues would decline as a result, a prediction that proved to be correct in the short term.
B. The tax on meals in restaurants is higher than the tax on many other goods and
services.
C. Over the last five years, smoking has steadily declined throughout Vorland.
D. In many of the towns that restrict smoking in restaurants, restaurants can maintain separate dining areas where smoking is permitted.
E. Over the last five years, government revenues from sales taxes have grown no
faster in the towns with restaurant smoking restrictions than in the towns that have no such restrictions.
correct.. expln plz ;)
Frobisher, a sixteenth-century English explorer, had soil samples from Canadas Kodlunarn Island examined for gold content. Because high gold content was reported, Elizabeth I funded two mining expeditions. Neither expedition found any gold there. Modern analysis of the islands soil indicates a very low gold content. Thus the methods used to determine the gold content of Frobishers samples must have been inaccurate.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. The gold content of the soil on Kodlunarn Island is much lower today than it was in the sixteenth century.
B. The two mining expeditions funded by Elizabeth I did not mine the same part of Kodlunarn Island.
C. The methods used to assess gold content of the soil samples provided by Frobisher were different from those generally used in the sixteenth century.
D. Frobisher did not have soil samples from any other Canadian island examined for gold content.
E. Gold was not added to the soil samples collected by Frobisher before the samples were examined
will go with E
IMO C.
Others either go against the given premise or are irelevant. E is little close but it indicates that conclusion is wrong. We don't have to defy the conclusion here.

D. Frobisher did not have soil samples from any other Canadian island examined for gold content.
E. Gold was not added to the soil samples collected by Frobisher before the samples were examined
Conclusion Forbisher's method used to determine gold was inaccurate.
Author concludes this due to the fact that during Forbishers test gold content came as high and recently gold content came as low.
Hence the assumption is the test samples were identical. (otherwise why would he conclude that the method was inaccurate)
Option E says gold was not added externally i.e. 'gold content wise' the samples were identical.
A recent survey found that more computers than copies of computer programs were purchased by Germans last year. The best interpretation of this finding is that the practice of illegally duplicating commercial computer programs is widespread among Germans.
Each of the following, if true, would counter some reasonable objection to the interpretation advanced above EXCEPT:
(A) Few German computer users write their own computer programs.
(B) There are few free noncommercial computer programs available in Germany.
(C) Some Germans purchase computers outside of Germany for use in Germany, and such purchases were counted in the survey.
(D) The typical German computer user has several commercially written computer programs on his or her computer.
(E) Many Germans legally make duplicates of commercial computer programs, but such duplicates were counted as purchased copies in the survey.
IMo C because computers purchase within Germany or outside Germany doesn't hurt the interpretation.
1. Doctor: Research shows that adolescents who play video games on a regular basis are three times as likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome as are adolescents who do not play video games. Federal legislation that prohibits the sale of video games to minors would help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents.
The doctors conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
A. The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors.
B. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.
C. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome.
D. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children.
E. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-eye coordination and improved reaction time.
2. On monday, daisys lemonade stand sold lemonade at 20 cents per cup. The lemon shack sold lemonade at 30 cents per cup. At the end of the day, daisys lemonade stand and the lemon shack reported identical revenues and identical profits.
The statements above best support which of the following assertions?
A. On monday, daisys lemonade stand sold fewer cups of lemonade than did the lemon shack.
B. The lemon shack sells higher quality lemonade than does daisys lemonade stand.
C. On monday, daisys lemonade stand and the lemon shack incurred identical costs to run their businesses.
D. In general, lemonade consumers prefer the lemonade at daisys lemonade stand to the lemonade at the lemon shack.
E. The lemon shack would not increase its revenues by lowering its prices.

1.In the course of her researches, a historian recently found two documents mentioning the same person, Erich Schnitzler. One, dated May 3, 1739, is a record of Schnitzlers arrest for peddling without a license. The second, undated, is a statement by Schnitzler asserting that he has been peddling off and on for 20 years.
The facts above best support which of the following conclusions?
(A) Schnitzler started peddling around 1719.
(B) Schnitzler was arrested repeatedly for peddling.
(C) The undated document was written before 1765.
(D) The arrest record was written after the undated document.
(E) The arrest record provides better evidence that Schnitzler peddled than does the undated document.

2.The only purpose for which a particular type of tape is needed is to hold certain surgical wounds closed for ten daysthe maximum time such wounds need tape. Newtape is a new brand of this type of tape. Newtapes salespeople claim that Newtape will improve healing because Newtape adheres twice as long as the currently used tape does.
Which of the following statements, if true, would most seriously call into question the claim made by Newtapes salespeople?
(A) Most surgical wounds take about ten days to heal.
(B) Most surgical tape is purchased by hospitals and clinics rather than by individual surgeons.
(C) The currently used tapes adhesiveness is more than sufficient to hold wounds closed for ten days.
(D) Neither Newtape nor the currently used tape adheres well to skin that has not been cleaned.
(E) Newtapes adhesion to skin that has been coated with a special chemical preparation is only half as good as the currently used tapes adhesion to such coated skin.

3.Advertisement: The worlds best coffee beans come from Colombia. The more Colombian beans in a blend of coffee, the better the blend, and no company purchases more Colombian beans than Kreemo Coffee, Inc. So it only stands to reason that if you buy a can of Kreemos coffee, youre buying the best blended coffee available today.
The reasoning of the argument in the advertisement is flawed because it overlooks the possibility that
(A) the equipment used by Kreemo to blend and package its coffee is no different from that used by most other coffee producers
(B) not all of Kreemos competitors use Colombian coffee beans in the blends of coffee they sell
(C) Kreemo sells more coffee than does any other company
(D) Kreemos coffee is the most expensive blended coffee available today
(E) the best unblended coffee is better than the best blended coffee

4.Advertisement: For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex. So when you want the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the advertisements argument?
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctors prescription.
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.
OA for the below CR is option C.I doubt the OA.I marked option E.

Can you check again plz?
if u read the ques stem carefully u are supposed to negate the negation of de argument or rather strengthen de argument dat "the practice of illegally duplicating commercial computer programs is widespread among Germans."
if u look at E it says "Many Germans legally make duplicates of commercial computer programs" and these are also counted under illegal.. so dat means in effect d actual number of illegal programs is actually lesser which weakens are main argument. Ergo d reasoning..
Padmalathas SaysOA is C . I was confused on why not E.

Insurance companies decrease their exposure to fraudulent claims by increasing the ratio of insurance claim specialists available to go out into the field to the number of open policies they currently hold. The more claim specialists that are available to go out into the field, the higher the number of questionable claims that are rejected. Some insurance companies can increase their claim specialist to open policy ratio by retraining personnel from other divisions or by not renewing some of their current policies when the time comes.
The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions?
(A) Rejecting more questionable claims is the best way to decrease exposure to fraudulent claims.
(B) Retraining personnel to become claim specialists decreases the exposure of insurance companies to fraudulent claims.
(C) Insurance companies that retrain personnel and renew fewer policies when the time comes will decrease their exposure to fraudulent claims more than a company that just did one or the other.
(D) Insurance companies avoid more fraudulent claims by increasing the number of claim specialists than by any other method.
(E) Some insurance companies can decrease their exposure to fraud by limiting the number of open claims they renew.
