8. Will the first 10 volumes of a 20-volume encyclopedia fit upright in the bookrack whose width is x
(1) x = 50 centimeters.
(2) Twelve of the volumes have an average (arithmetic mean) thickness of 5 centimeters.
Are x and y both positive?
(1) 2x - 2y = 1
(2) x/y > 1
My try:
what does stmt mean? It means x is 1/2 a ditance away and to the right of y. that is x is always 1/2 a distance to the right of y. So this can give us sign of (y,x) as (--) (-+) (++). Notice (+-) is not possibel. So not conclusive.
What does 2nd stmt mean?
Both have same sign and in magnitude x is greater than that of y. so not conclusive.
consider both: In the case of (--) the magnitude of y will be greater. so neglected. hence (++) is the only valid scenario for both the stmt to hold true. Hence the answer is C.
Koi shaq??

Another one from GMAT Prep:-
If x is a positive number less than 10, is z greater than the average (arithmetic mean) of x and 10?
1) On the number line, z is closer to 10 than it is to x.
2) z = 5x
x lies between 0 and 10. and the AM is exactly in the middle of x and 10. so z being closer to 10 is alqays greater than the avg. so A is sufficient.
z=5x>(x+10)/2=> 9x>10 => x>10/9. but this will not hold when x is less than 10/9. So not sufficient.
hence answer is A.
which two equation do we have
a+b= -1 and ab= -6 so how can we find a and b from this
(a-b)^2 = (a+b)^2-4ab=1+24=25. so a-b=+/-5.
so (a,b)= (2,-3) or (-2,3). Ok so what is OA? I think in this case it sud be E.

we cannot find out the thickness of 1st 10 volumes. So E is the answer.
hi,
can someone pls explain the soln. for this DS question?
thanks,

once we say r=s, that means we are drawing an equilateral triangle inside the circle if we join x and y. So circumference will be 27 units. so C sud be the answer. what is OA??
While on a straight road, car X and car Y are traveling at different constant rates. If car X is now 1 mile ahead of car Y, how many minutes from now will car X be 2 miles ahead of car Y ?
(1) Car X is traveling at 50 miles per hour and car Y is traveling at 40 miles per hour.
(2) 3 minutes ago car X was 21 mile ahead of car Y.
(1) Car X is traveling at 50 miles per hour and car Y is traveling at 40 miles per hour.

Answer can be found out using option 1 but not option 2 alone
While on a straight road, car
X and car Y are traveling at different constant rates.
Answer sud be option A. We can also conclude from stmt 2 that car X wil never be 2 km ahead of Y after the current situation.

(1) Car X is traveling at 50 miles per hour and car Y is traveling at 40 miles per hour.
(2) 3 minutes ago car X was 21 mile ahead of car Y.
My take : D
Its clear that we can get answer frm 1.
From 2 we know that Car X will never be 2 miles ahead of Car Y again (Constant speed).
Hence D.

yes C is the answer.
But i didn't understand ur explanation.
the formula arc length = radius * angle subtendended at the center of the circle .
Here the circle is not fully inscribed inside the triangle.
Integers m and p are such that 2 1
1) GCF of m and p is 2
2) LCM of m and p is 30
Integers m and p are such that 21
1) GCF of m and p is 2
2) LCM of m and p is 30
Gcf * lcm = m*p
60= 3*2*5*2
numbers are 6 and 10
So we can find de rem...
Whtz de Oa?

My answer is A.
Coz using (1) alone you can find out the answer.
But using (2) you cannot find out / say the time required to overtake car Y.

My picks are E,C,B.....pls post OAs....
ashishjha100 SaysMy picks are E,C,B.....pls post OAs....
How did ye arrive to the conclusion that it's B?
According to me:
Well if its greater than the median
1 3 8 12 x
then x is atleast 9
when x is 9 avg= 31/5 = 6 something
now lets say x is 26 then 40/5= 8 which is the median
inc the value of x and the avg increases
The OAs are C, C & E respectively.
