As best I know, this is not true. Although I have heard that the test is getting tougher as time progresses, to factor in ever-rising scores from the Indian and Chinese junta. Punishment for being smart, I guess ;).
I gave the GMAT 2 yrs ago for the first time and screwed it up. It was also a hurried effort and also one where I didnt do much research about the test and the difficulty levels.
The nature of the GMAT Test is very statistical and the way the test progresses is very probabilistic in nature. This is why it becomes very tough for anyone, even the test makers to do much about "one off" instances, for which we end up on the wrong side of the score.
I have a fair idea of statistical theorems (those as applied to business) and it's implications.
I would say this is the way different people would look at the GMAT Test (especially people on the other side of the table)
1. They DO NOT look at individual tests. For understanding the performance of the adaptive nature of the test, they monitor SD (Standard Deviation) on a periodic basis and that becomes the metric on which decisions are based, whereas for any one of us, the test takers, it's a very very critical test that we take and pay 10 Grand for.

esp the question: How reliable are GMATscores?
I have come to the belief that I now have to be really well prepared and also to practice a LOT before I give it again, and strategize to minimize all 'surprises' on Test Day.

A little off topic but has anyone heard of "experimental sections" on the GMAT. I have been told by someone that there is an experimental section on the GMAT about which you may or may not be informed. If you are informed about it well and good. If not... it could be either a verbal or quant section extra and you will never know which was the experimental section.
How true is this.

It is said that a few questions in GMAT are always trial questions. Perhaps the idea is to determine the difficulty level of such questions so that they can be used as actual questions.

guess u r right...I took GMAT this july...got 720 (49q 40v)..and the QA level was definetly more than that of OG questions...Infact I got 2 P&C; and 1 Probabilty question at the crucial stage of first 20 questions of the test...
VA, though, was compatible with the OG level.
