159) Based on accounts of various ancient writers, scholars have painted a sketchy picture of the activities of an all-female cult that, perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., worshipped a goddess known in Latin as Bona Dea, the good goddess.

(A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers
(B) Basing it on various ancient writers accounts
(C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis
(D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used
(E) Using accounts of various ancient writers

What should be the answer????

Ok..I think I have already solved this one before and got it wrong too. The answer to this must be E. Here is why...

(A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers - Incorrect usage of based on. Should have been based on various ancient writers' accounts, scholars have...

(B) Basing it on various ancient writers accounts - Basing it on...(incorrect)

(C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis - Wordy and awkward

(D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used - By not correct. Awkward.

(E) Using accounts of various ancient writers - Correct usage of gerund Using. Refers directly to the object accounts.
nairpraveenk Says
Sorry Satish, the correct answer is 'A'. I dont know the analysis :(.

Hmm...wonder what is the explanation for B being incorrect... ??:

Analysis for these guys......

What should be the answer????

Okay...i agree with satish on the answer...i think its E...but the explanation is not a great one...
my try...
Based on accounts of various ancient writers is the modifier. So it can be placed before or after the object, but it has to be close...rite??
now if i shift it to:

Scholars,
Based on accounts of various ancient writers, blah blah...
it shud sound correct. ok??

But this one doesnt...because scholars are not based on anything!!
A gone!!
basing is wrong usage...B gone!!
C is awkward and wordy....gone!!
D is awkward...i cant explain whats wrong...but its totally ridiculous..Gone!!
E...fits like it shud!! Scholars,
using accounts of various ancient writers,
have painted a sketchy picture.....

So for mmodifiers...try placing after...makes more sense and u can see the error!

cheers!!

Same like last one...based on...scientists are not based on anything...the conclusions are based upon the findings....
so A, C, E gone!!

B & D left...on vertical scanning...i find that the fight is between like vs such as...
i will go for such as...cuz they are examples of reptiles...
on the othyer hand like is similarity...which is not the case here..
so i will go for B...

here i wud see what does carefully coordinating them refer to?? illustrations i guess...rite?? so i wud see which choice refers to it most accurately...
A and B use of them is not clear....i think C is clear ...uses which.
Not so sure...but i wud go for C.

(C) Besides heat and light, the Sun is also the source of a continuous streaming
(D) The Sun is the source not only of heat and light, but also of a continuous stream
(E) The Sun is the source of not only heat and light but, as well, of a continuous streaming

Answer is 'A'. Why is the answer not 'E'? Can some one help me please?

D should be the answer...not only...but also...is correctly used...
A B C are awkward and unidomatic...parallelism is wrong.

All are correct. You are really good in SC. 😁 And nice analysis too :). Well how did you come 'C' for the last problem? Please psot the analysis. :)

for the third one....interval between sounds rite to me...so i wud see only A and C

now...between passing is not so gud...i wont go for a verb here...if it were between its passing...it still wud make some sense...between its passes is more clear...
thats how C

and hey...i am not getting thanx for explantions...that too long ones....and u gettin thanx for posting questions!!

And Puys, this is stil unaswered.....
I aslo wanted to know is this a type of BOLDFACE Question??
Consumer advocate: it is generally true, at least in this state, that lawyers who advertise a specific service
charge less for that service than lawyers who do not advertise. It is also true that
each time restrictions on the
advertising of legal services have been eliminated, the number of lawyers advertising their services has
increased and legal costs to consumers have declined in consequence.
However, eliminating the state
requirement that legal advertisements must specify fees for specific services would almost certainly increase
rather than further reduce consumer's legal costs. Lawyers would no longer have an incentive to lower their fees
when they begin advertising and
if no longer required to specify fee arrangements, many lawyers who now
advertise would increase their fees.
In the consumer advocate's argument, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
(A) The first is a generalization that the consumer advocate accepts as true; the second is presented as a
consequence that follows from the truth of that generalization.
(B) The first is a pattern of cause and effect that the consumer advocate argues will be repeated in the case at
issue; the second acknowledges a circumstance in which that pattern would not hold.
(C) The first is pattern of cause and effect that the consumer advocate predicts will not hold in the case at issue;
the second offers a consideration in support of that prediction.
(D) The first is evidence that the consumer advocate offers in support of a certain prediction; the second is that
prediction.
(E) The first acknowledges a consideration that weighs against the main position that the consumer advocate
defends; the second is that position.

Gurus,

I got stumped by fairly basic questions from GMAT Prep. I'd better read the chapter on exponents once again ! Can someone help me with these questions:

Q1. 5^21 * 4^ 11 = 2 * 10 ^x
Determine value of X

Q2. 2 ^ (4-1)^2 / 2 = ??

I was surprised to see the answer or Q2 as 2^8 . I was expecting 2^5 as answer. I didn't know that there is an exponent of an exponent. I expcted it to evaluate as 2 ^(3*2) / 2, but it turned out to be 2^9 /2.

Any inputs please?

Thanks in advance.

Gurus,

I got stumped by fairly basic questions from GMAT Prep. I'd better read the chapter on exponents once again ! Can someone help me with these questions:

Q1. 5^21 * 4^ 11 = 2 * 10 ^x
Determine value of X

first step... 4^11 = 2^22
second step... 2^22 = 2*2^21
third step... club 5 and 2 together since now they hav same powers...
that gives...10^21
so X = 21

Q2. 2 ^ (4-1)^2 / 2 = ??

the mistake u made is....u evaluated division before exponent...
PEMDAS rule says...exponent before division...

so we proceed as...
P = parantheses...(4-1) = 3
now E = exponents... 2^(3)^2= 2^9
now D = division...(2^9)divided by 2 will give 2^8
answer 8

Cheers!!

Thanks a lot Mucool... no wonder you bagged 770 on the test !

Here is one more from the world of exponents.. I'm sure this is easier than it looks.. but not easy enough..

!. What is the value of 4^1/2 + 4^1/3 + 4^ 1/4

Options were like :

1.Between 2 and 3
2.Greater than 3
3.Greater than 4

Here are some more questions from GMATPREP .... can someone help please

Alpha, the answer will be 3.Greater than 4
My analyssi...

4^1/2 + 4^1/3 + 4^ 1/4

4^1/2 = Square root of 4 = 2
4^1/3 = Cube root of 4 = (This is greater than 1.) Let it be 1.x
4^1/4 = 2^(2/4) = 2^1/2 = Square root of 2 = 1.4 (approx)

so the sum = 2 + 1.x + 1.4 > 4.
