During an ice age, the buildup of ice at the poles and the drop in water levels near the equator speed up the Earths rotation, like a spinning figure skater whose speed increases when her arms are drawn in.
(A) like a spinning figure skater whose speed increases when her arms are drawn in (B) like the increased speed of a figure skater when her arms are drawn in (C) like a figure skater who increases speed while spinning with her arms drawn in (D) just as a spinning figure skater who increases speed by drawing in her arms (E) just as a spinning figure skater increases speed by drawing in her arms
hi, is the answer for this 'E' I think A, B,C can be eliminated because the action 'increase in speed' is compared here and like is used to compare only nouns. D is wrong because it compares the increase in speed with the spinning figure skater. Hence I would go with 'E'
1) Presenters at the seminar, one who is blind, will demonstrate adaptive equipment that allows visually impaired people to use computers. (A) one who (B) one of them who (C) and one of them who (D) one of whom (E) one of which
2) Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large. (A) to survive (B) of firms to survive (C) for surviving (D) for survival (E) for firms' survival

I think the answer the is (c) Can anyone tell me why this cannot be the answer?
B,C both use 'is' where i think a prural verb is more appropriate. But by 'parallelism' only D,E fit the bill. D as pointed out by sandy uses 'is' awkwardly hence i would rather merit E as the correct answer.
During an ice age, the buildup of ice at the poles and the drop in water levels near the equator speed up the Earth's rotation, like a spinning figure skater whose speed increases when her arms are drawn in.
This one seems very tricky. I think the trick here is to guess what the comparison is between. According to me here the the spinning Earth is compared to a spinning figure skater and then how her speed increases when she draws in her arms. Also, for comparison, like should be used and not just.
Hence B is out as the subject should not be the speed. C is out as the comparison is with a spinning figure skater and not just a figure skater.
I think the answer the is (c) Can anyone tell me why this cannot be the answer?
This deals with parallelism. In the sentence the focus is what is well known. 1) how items are placed on shelves 2) the frequency of inventory turnovers can be Hence item 2) should be parallel to 1) i.e. (E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be. You might ask why it is not (D). Inventory turns over by itself. No one turns it over.
Also, I feel it would better if the person who posts the question also posts the answer a few days hence.
He can mention in his post (the one with the question) as to when he is going to post the answer.
Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged in 1911,Scott Joplin's ragtime opera"Treemonisha"was not produceduntil 1972,sixty-one years after its completion. (A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged (B) Except for a concert performance with the composer himself staging it (C) Besides a concert performance being staged by the composer himself (D) Excepting a concert performance that the composer himself staged (E) With the exception of a concert performance with the staging done by the composer himself.
According to me the answer is A and not E. Exception is used when there is a group of like things and one of them is different from the others.

(A) to survive (B) of firms to survive (C) for surviving (D) for survival (E) for firms' survival
Answer to (1) is (D). All presenters are going to demonstrate not just the person who is blind.
Answer to (2) is (B). We need the word firms to complement it in the later part of the sentence.
will go for C. Later part of the sentence has singulars. A rally, A weakening. Hence, A lowering is correct. Among B and C, C sounds much better. B does not indicate that the inflation will lower. Use of "Along with" makes that meaning clear. Please PM if answers are wrong :)
I have almost give this up, but if I had to make a choice, it would be E. Reason: to be used | with to make computers. Also, beacause of comparison, like is more appropriate.
Cheers! Satish
According to me,
Answer for (1) is (B) and not (C) since present tense should be used. The filigree still exists.
Answer for (2) is (B) and not (C) since (C) implies that it leads to fears about inflation.
Answer for (3) is (C) since the given purposes are examples and hence "such .... as" should be used.
has anyone heard of this phrase - "increasing by important"? I came across this in one of the IMS GMAT tests. I always thought its "increasingly important" or "increasing in importance" but the correct answer is one with "increasing by important"?
1) Lacking information about energy use, poeple tend to overestimate the amount of energy used by equipment, such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate that used by unobstrusive equipment, such as water heaters.
A) equipment, such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate that
B) equipment, such as lights, that are visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
C) equipment, such as lights, that is visible and must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
D) visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate that
E) visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate it when
2) However much United States voters may agree that there is a waste in government and that the government as a whole spends beyond its means, it is difficult to find broad support for a maovement toward a minimal state.
A) However much United States voters may agree that
B) Despite the agreement among United States voters to the fact
C) Although United States voters agree
D) Even though United States voters may agree
E) There is agreement among United States voters that
would be a lot more helpful, if u cud also give the proper reasoning for ur answers.
A - > no parallelism, B -> Sentence is correct, but i think 'equipment' as a whole is a collective noun and shub be supported by a singular verb IS D, E -> Visible equipment doesn't make sense.
Second one ... is very confusing :) A is out .. it can be how much ever , which also wont fit B -> Closecall .. but i think it is passive and wordy C -> no may here .. D -> This is my choice E -> the sentence is wrong, i think it needs to be an agreement.

Hi, I think the answer to Q.1. is 'D'. The 'that' in underestimate that refers to the amount of energy. 'it when' is wrong usage. this eliminates B,C,E. Between A & D, D is short and simple. Hence D.
For Q.2 it is 'A'. agree is to be followed by that. Only A & E has 'that'. E is awkward and doesnt convey the meaning. Hence 'A'

i had one doubt regarding the second ques. isnt much united states voters wrong Eng. much is usually used for non countable things??????
also in the first one it can b said that underestimated it when is to compare usages by two kind of eqiupments and thus bring out a diff b/w them.

Answer to (1) is D. The subject here is "equipment" and hence "visible" should modify "equipment" and not "lights". Also for same reason "is" should be used and not "are".
Answer to (2) is A. The sentence has to start with However much or Although or Despite or Even Though. Option A seems to be the best choice.
@gmat_delhi2007 - You are right, "much" has to be used for non-countable things. In 2nd questions, "much" is used for agreement and not voters.
