GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

1)a
2)b
3)b

Friend... Do quote the question number and the explanation for your answers πŸ˜ƒ
has anyone heard of this phrase - "increasing by important"? I came
across this in one of the IMS GMAT tests. I always thought
its "increasingly important" or "increasing in importance" but the
correct answer is one with "increasing by important"?

Hey Hugdrug, why dont you try to give us the sentence. Maybe with proper context the idiom might be correct. Or like I previously had said "GMAT expects the best of the options and not necessarily a correct answer." The options must be the better one among the others.

Trying to learn some of the basics of programming is the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager: some people end up going to engineering school, and others, twenty years later, remember nothing of the experience.
(A) the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager
(B) similar to a teenager tinkering with a car
(C) like tinkering with a car as a teenager
(D) the same as a teenager tinkering with a car
(E) like the teenager's tinkering with a car

Well people... I am way way way behind my original schedule. According to my schedule I should have stopped SC more than 20 days back. Finally I have put my foot down. I am now only gonna do whatever I can on this thread and am moving on to CR. So from now on, you will find me active on that thread as well. πŸ˜ƒ

Is the answer A ??

Parallelism

I'm stuck between B n D.A is awkward ....
Like is used to compare nouns , So B n D left
I'll go for B...I guess it is an example rather than a comparison

the ans are indeed D for 1 and A for 2.

Thanx a lot mealiennohuman and o-range for ur explanations.

seems comparison for a phenomenon, A,C and E fit the bill but because E seems beastly awkward and A assumes them to be the same, I would merit C to be the correct choice.

Heres the answer...
Question Source: 1000 SC, Number 878
Answer: A

The main reason is parallelism. The action "to learn" is compared with "to tinker" and hence the two should be parallel. "Trying" is not the action being compared.

My answer is E....Hopefully is always almost wrong
"such as elecctromagnetic waves do" is a well placed example....:)

I think the answer is B. "in the way electromagnetic waves do" sounds more appropriate than "such as electromagnetic waves do".

Hi All,

1. I think correct option is D
(Visible equipment matches unobtrusive equipment)
(No confusion with usage of is / are)

2. D

Ans .
1) D...Visible correctly modifies equipment.it when...is akward and wordy.
2)A .More precise than other choices

(D) like electromagnetic waves, would enable, hopefully
(E) such as electromagnetic waves do, will, it is hoped, enable

Hey guys..

I would go with B. "in the way electromagnetic waves do" is a better choice than like (absolutely wrong) or such as...do.
"hopefully will enable" is awkward.
Leaves choice B.
