Hopefully is incorrect in GMAT. And there is a comparison involved. Hence "such as" should not be used. Hence E out.

Here are the answers according to me: 1. We need an option which starts with a contradiction. Hence A,D,E are out. From the later part of the sentence it appears that Samuel Johnson is also dead. Hence to keep the tense same, I choose C. 2. We need the word "between" in the answer. I choose C. 3. We need the option to start with "as" to complement the idiom "as close..... as". And to complement "to being..." I think we need "come" to complement "came". Hence I choose A.

Here are my answers,
1) There is a contradiction involved, so however wud make sense than furthermore or in addition. Considering the tense & paralleilsm into account we can narrow down to C
However and 'Have bothered'
2) This is a good one. The seventy-six-year interval period is the key here. This denotes the interval between the times when the commet passes the earth. Based on this, we can say it is 'C'.
3) Idiom involved is as +close+ as . So it has to be a,b,c . anyone has ever come suits the structure here. So A.

Hi Every1!! I am a new person here!! First let me introduce myself. I am a software engineer working for the past 3 yrs and now trying to crack the GMAT. Just came across this thread and i guess this is the best. I would keep it short and sweet. I have been preparing for a month now, unfortunately not getting too much time mainly coz of my work schedule. Lately i assessed my preparation and i found that i have a lot of problems with my sentence correction. I somehow am not able to get the things right. Could some1 please help me understand the method that should be followed. something that would increase my accuracy. Would be looking forward to your replies. Thanks in advance.

Hmm, thats interesting. I couldn't see any problem with C, although, now that you mentioned the answer as B, it seems to fit as well :). Any reason why they have eliminated C ?? maybe from that we can conclude something.

Well while choosing the answer I was stuck between B and C. Now after knowing the answer is B I can say why.
Whenever we are stating facts they are always in the Perfect tense. Here also we are simply stating that "Caffeine did not seem to bother...." and then we go on to say what he used to do. Hence B is the answer.
Heres another... My take is B. A is wrong were published (subject verb agreement error) in C as shud be presnt cause ur relating two things published in the same year in D,E that suggests that The adventures of huckleberry finn revealed that Twain.... and not the the letter by mark twain

wats the OA
A, D and E are conspicuously incorrect In option (c), 'That' is used as a conjunction As per American Heritage Dictionary it can be used in the following ways i) To introduce a noun clause that is usually subject or object of the verb Ex. That Ram is a good student is undenialble... ii) To introduce a subordinate clause stating result, wish, purpose, reason or cause Ex. We hoped that India Tendulkar will fire in World cup. There are many other ways where 'that' can be used as a conjunction, however use of 'that' doesnt fit in here.
I think correct answer should be (b) Here 'as' is used as a conjunction meaning 'At the same time that'

Here's the answer... Question source: 1000 SC, Number 11. Answer: (C)
(A) is clearly wrong becoz of "were published" (B) is wrong since the comparison between parallel objects has not been made. Comparison between the year of publication and the book has been made. The correct comparison would have been "...written in the same year of publication as that of The Adventures ..." (D) & (E) change the meaning of the sentence.

Here's the answer according to me... (A) is wrong since it is not clear what is co-ordinated with narratives. Is it illustrations or is it her observation and love. (B) is out for same reason. (D) and (E) are awkward and wordy. I think answer is (C).
