I understand the theory of as and like. But my gut feeling is that 'as' can be used when the comparison is too close or is real.
His students can be his friends and he treats them so friendly as if they are his friends. His students cannot be animals. 'He treats his students as animals' sounds wrong. As is used when the comparison is very close, I mean when the comparison is almost a reality. Like is used when the comparison is not that close and it cannot be real.
I somehow find this logic hard to understand ... How do you quantify "close".? Your logic may work for this example, but be sure to find some very close answers ahead ...
As I posted before, "as" is used to compare 2 clauses while "like" is used to compare 2 nouns/noun phrases. This is also what I've read at a number of places.
Can someone try to explain why is "like" not the answer in (3)?
I understand usage of 'as' is incorrect in sentence where comparison is to animals but whats wrong to say '...treats like friends'? '....treats as friends' is also correct but why choose 'as' over 'like'. Now here some GMAT rule should be there, I believe.
Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large. B is the answer..
Reasoning..Non underline portion has a reference to firms in last line..(Such firms)...which is nothing but the modifier for the first line..and especially modifing the firms...hence the first line should have a reference to "Firms".. come to B/E.. 1) TO survive is the right idiom 2) we need Firm not possesive subject, Firm's survival...
Require to is the correct idiom. Hence A should be the answer.
Regards Ritu
Yes you are correct that Require needs an infinitive. So to survive is correct. Now we have A and B answer choices left.
Again, if you look on complete senetece, it says about firms. Also, enormous research and development expenditures required to survive is incomplete. Considering all these, B is the right one.

Hi all,
Like and As, Both can be used with Nouns as per the sentence. In GMat, when two sentences are correct, we check which on eis sounding awkword.
With FRiends, Like is also correct. We have to choose the best answer choce, so, i will choose He treats his students as friends.

(A) to survive (B) of firms to survive (C) for surviving (D) for survival (E) for firms' survival Share your answer(s) and explanation(s)/reasoning(s) plz.. ;)
i solved it like this
require can be used as mentioned below require of require to
if something is expected --then use require of
e.g. what is required of me in this job?
if something is essential (considered as a mandate or duty) --then use require to
e.g. we are required to report to the manager on the very first day.
Here the research and development is expected out of firms for survival.

Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large. (A) to survive (B) of firms to survive (C) for surviving (D) for survival (E) for firms' survival Without looking into the choices: In the second part of the sentence such firms is mentioned. So it is referring to something which should be already mentioned. Hence firms should be mentioned in the first part of the sentence. After looking into choices and applying my understanding, I am left with only two options, B and E. E sounds easy and understandable. I will go with E as Enormous research required of firms to survive in the electronics industry appears more wordy and Enormous research required for firms survival in the electronics industry give you a clear picture of what the intent of sentence is. Please let me know your comments.

There is no pronoun used. I think the answer should be E. A President entering the final two years of a second term is likely to be at a severe disadvantage and is often unable to carry out a legislative program. A) likely to be at a severe disadvantage and is often unable to (B) likely severely disadvantaged and often unable to (C) liable to be severely disadvantaged and cannot often (D) liable that he or she is at a severe disadvantage and cannot often (E) at a severe disadvantage, often likely to be unable that he or she can Without looking into choices, Likely to be in a severe disadvantage .should be used rather than likely to be at. But after looking at the choices:
Likely to be at - I am not sure if this can be used.
Likely severely disadvantaged - too wordy
Liable to be - This changes the meaning and intent of the sentence.
Liable - Changes the intent of the sentence
This again changes the meaning of sentence.
Now I think out of all these choices A is the best choice. 84. One legacy of Madison Avenue's recent campaign to appeal to people fifty years old and over is the realization that as a person ages. their concerns change as well. Without looking at the choices: As a person ages their concerns change as well : No parallelism. Person is singular and the pronoun used is their. It should be his. Or the sentence should be: As people age their concerns change as well. After looking into the choices: (A) the realization that as a person ages, their: No parallelism plural pronoun is used for singular subject. (B) the realization that as people age, their : Seems to be ok (C) to realize that when a person ages, his or her: more wordy (D) to realize that when people age, their to realize that when.usage of that when seems awkward. (E) realizing that as people age, their: unnecessary usage of present continuous(realizing)it can be simple present.
The reasoning given by amsey1382 is very close to the explanation given in OG, and holds good.
Thanks all!!

try this one.. this it took me over 5mins to figure out the answer.. bloody messed up sentence.. there was a point where I started thinking of adding another option, "All of the above".. Any how, try this and have fun!!

I would go with Choice D. This is my analysis: 1. The contact is effected over a broad surface instead of a series - doesn't sound good obviously. Pronoun "at" is missing - this is another issue. 2. The contact is effected over a broad surfaceas opposed to a series - you can not "oppose a bonding to a series", while you can "oppose against". 3. The contact is effected over a broad surfacein contrast with a series - nope, "contrast with a series"?. This creates a modifier issue. 4. The contact is effected over a broad surfacerather than at a series - correct, as the contact is somewhere, rather than at somewhere else. 5. The contact is effected over a broad surfaceas against being at a series- "being" is the issue. This creates a tense problem.
