Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large. (A) to survive (B) of firms to survive (C) for surviving (D) for survival (E) for firms' survival Share your answer(s) and explanation(s)/reasoning(s) plz.. ;)
B is the answer.because ,introduces the subordinate clause referring to the same subject of main clause.main clause subject is Firms , so the first sentence must be refeering to firms only.
try this one.. this it took me over 5mins to figure out the answer.. bloody messed up sentence.. there was a point where I started thinking of adding another option, "All of the above".. Any how, try this and have fun!!
In metalwork one advantage of adhesive-bonding over spot-welding is that the contact, and hence the bonding, is effected continuously over a broad surface instead of a series of regularly spaced points with no bonding in between. (A) instead of (B) as opposed to (C) in contrast with (D) rather than at (E) as against being at
In the question , the two type of weldings are compared. The advantage of one over the other is explained.I think instead and rather are used to indicate the alternate choice. So ruled out. I left E bcoz of being usage .In contrast is used in the negative sense. So the only left option is B which rightly put one welding advanatge over other.
hi... can somebody explain wt the answer is and why...?

I would choose C. D/E ruled out as incorrect use of 'between'. A/B ruled out as incorrect use of 'that'. 'variations in life spans' is plural and requires the use of plural form 'those'. A can also be ruled out for incorrect use of 'as' for comparison.
Parallelism, form (singular/plural) and usage of correct Idiom being my reasons... what is ths OA? ;)

I think it should be (C). Is that correct?
Explanation: 1) Usage of "between" is wrong. Use "among" to compare more than 2 things. 2) "those" should be used for "variations" (plural) rather than "that" Hence (C).

IMO - D

I'll go with Option B.) as opposed to
I would go with Choice D. This is my analysis: 1. The contact is effected over a broad surface instead of a series - doesn't sound good obviously. Pronoun "at" is missing - this is another issue. 2. The contact is effected over a broad surfaceas opposed to a series - you can not "oppose a bonding to a series", while you can "oppose against". 3. The contact is effected over a broad surfacein contrast with a series - nope, "contrast with a series"?. This creates a modifier issue. 4. The contact is effected over a broad surfacerather than at a series - correct, as the contact is somewhere, rather than at somewhere else. 5. The contact is effected over a broad surfaceas against being at a series- "being" is the issue. This creates a tense problem.
Am I right?

Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.
(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive (E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids

it seems the 2nd and joins so2 and n20 while the 1st one joins emissions and atmospheric water..with seems to modify the sentence incorrectly ,it should have brought in preposition of to introduce with in the sentence.sentence remains in present indefinite tense. should not it be e as the correct option?
I think use of with is between two entities here that`s not the case, author is defining the consequences of pollution, hence "with" is ruled out. Option-C is in present perfect tense which one cant use here, similarly option-d is having tense problem(Past perfect). Left with Option-E, which is appropriate with its tense.
Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids.
(A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (B) with atmospheric water vapor producing highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (C) and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive
(E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids
I wud have chosen option E, reason being.. sentence structure and tense.
The correct idiom usage is-between x and y X -sulfuric and nitric acid Y-atmospheric water vapor
which is illogically refeering to water vapor. E is definately the right answer.
Between x and yIt should not be between X with y. A and B eliminated. Acid rain result from the chemical reactions between To produce ..changes the intent. Production of sulphuric acid and nitric acids is the unwanted result. But from the sentence to produce it appears as if the reaction is made to occur to produce these acids. So the best answer is C. Reactions is plural, so has has to be used instead of have.
My Mistake San.... Yes reactions is plural. So have to be used. Now the only choice would be D. But I am a bit skeptical about D as it is wordy/awkward (two times which are used. ) It can be expressed in a short sentence. Now I would go with E.
