hi
There is a very subtle difference between use of "instead of " and "rr ather than".

USE OF "Instead of " ======for choice
when u want to indicate choice u say instead of.
eg. I will have tea instead of coffee. ie.i like tea but i dont like coffee.so u r choosing tea over coffee. Instead has negative connotation.

USE OF "rather than" ========== for preferance
when u have to decide amongst the options then wat u prefer.
eg. I will have tea rather than coffee. ie.I like both tea and coffee but i will prefer tea over coffee.
