GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

I would have marked option C

The only confusion I believe is between option C and option E.. to kill the confusion I omitted the middle sentence (unwanted part for me)

Although fruit can no longer grow once it is picked, it continues for some time to respire, taking in oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide, ______

so the answer should fit the new sentence (without the highlighted section above) fine..

Although fruit can no longer grow once it is picked, it continues for some time to respire, _just like the breathing of human beings_

Comparing the respiration in fruits with the breathing (aka respiration) in human beings..

so the correct answer must be option C

please share the OA ;)

IMO: Answer .... E

C - With "Just like" is a close contender, but here for this SC, we need to concentrate on "taking in o2 and leaving co2" which is a action.

"Just" when used with "like" is extending or emphasizing a little more, but carries the same meaning as "Similar to"

Since we need to concentrate on the action here, "Just As" is better.

A good one indeed !

Dude the Answer is B.

Can u please elaborate why " TO AVOID " can not be the correct answer.

What's inappropriate reference ???

1. C.
Gut instict is to be treated as singular. Now is the fight between C and D. I somehow prefer C. Someone please throw some light on it.

2. E
Booming marker is singular therefor "has" fits here. Another is inappropriate.
Now between B and E, I prefer E because its in simple present tense.

Dude

In this case, "TO AVOID" is not referring to chalice(noun), thats the reason pronoun "it" word is required before the word "being" in sentence.

Please provide your reasonings as well. I wanted to clarify something, will do that once you guys are done.

Q. Among the objects found in the excavated temple were small terra-cotta effigies left by supplicants who were either asking the goddess Bona Dea's aid in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.

A. in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help
B. in healing physical and mental ills and to thank her for helping
C. in healing physical and mental ills, and thanking her for helping
D. to heal physical and mental ills or to thank her for such help
E. to heal physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help

Who told u that..??..

You can use "so as" when sentence is negative such as;
1. so unrealistic as
2. not so much as

"The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculpture portrait, the features of which are so unrealistic as to constitute what one scholar calls an 'artificial face." (OG #88, 10th edition, answer choice A)

I meant the usage of "so as", which is wrong on the GMAT and not "so unrealistic as to".

Had the above sentence been, "..............which are unrealistic so as to constitute.....", it would be wrong.

Hope that makes things clear.
