Sri,
Shouldn't it be C? If no,request you to pls explain why not.

Could not understand this sentence
Will pick B as my guess. Waiting for experts' comments.

IMO the ans is C. If the modifier "reference-laden poems characteristic off his early work" is removed it becomes ---
It was in the sonorous where Robert Lowell established his reputation.
A could be an ans if the initial "in" in the "It was in the sonorous" was not there.

yes dude, ur right... and i went with A, but later figured out why it was incorrect...this was from 1000 SC...

IMO C . Looks pretty simple or I am terribly wrong.

this one is unresolved.. but I am sure the answer has to either of the 2 choices: option C or option E

It was in the sonorous, reference-laden poems characteristic off his early work _____ Robert Lowell established his reputation.

"It was in the.." tells me that it is referring to something which constitutes something else.. i.e. poems constitute his repuatation..

now going by rule of thumb, "where" is used to refer places so it is not the best word to fit in..

so going by the rule of elimination only option E is left.. so it must be the correct answer

leyts substitute and check;
It was in the sonorous, reference-laden poems characteristic off his early work that Robert Lowell established his reputation.

It was in the sonorous, reference-laden poems characteristic off his early work in which Robert Lowell established his reputation.
a. in which
b. by which
c. where
d. whereby
e. that

a. In Swansea of Dylan Thomas' boyhood
b. In the Swansea of Dylan Thomas' boyhood
c. There is Swansea in the boyhood of Dylan Thomas
d. At the time of Dylan Thomas' boyhood in Swansea
e. In the boyhood of Dylan Thomas' Swansea

the biggest trouble here is to be able to understand what the actual sentence is trying to imply.. and that largely depends on the reader's ability to grasp the correct meaning only on the basis of non-underlined portion of the sentence..

_____________________ Welsh was understood by a third of the inhabitants.

"Welsh" is being discussed in here which can be anything which is understandable..can be a language or a subject or regulations etc..

now only on this basis lets eliminate the wrong ones first..

a. In Swansea of Dylan Thomas' boyhood - in Swansea of boyhood
b. In the Swansea of Dylan Thomas' boyhood - portrays something which has changed over the time... but the use of "the" before Swansea creates ambiguity
c. There is Swansea in the boyhood of Dylan Thomas - woof.. why would people even care to udnerstand something like tha
d. At the time of Dylan Thomas' boyhood in Swansea
- Put the time frame in context correctly.. and then talks about Swansea.. and then the non-underlined portion of the sentence makes it sound complete and sensible..
e. In the boyhood of Dylan Thomas' Swansea - in the boyhood of Swansea.. wth does that mean

again.. I dunno the OA.. but I would have marked option D
Last August, while cleaning the field, a mine exploded.
a. Last August, while cleaning the field, a mine exploded.
b. While clearing the field, a mine exploded last August.
c. Last August, a mine exploded while clearing the field.
d. A mine exploded last August while the field was being cleared.
e. A mine was exploded by clearing the field last August.

I think this is pretty straight forward.. but with only on glitch, the use of "being" in the most appropriate option..

I would have marked option D
A mine exploded last August while the field was being cleared.

Sometimes simplicity is too tempting. We need to stick by the rules to answer this one.

to vs 'that they' - to wins as a Verb form is always superior to adjective in concision principles.

IMO: C
