GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

I believe that skill can be both a count noun as well as a non-count noun. it all depends upon the context.

Take a look at the example below:
1. Harry knows quite a few driving skills.

Conversely, if were to ask Harry about his driving skills, I would ask.
2. How much skill do you have in driving a car, Harry?

So you see, the word "skill" remains the same but depending on the context, skill can be a non-count or a count noun?

hope that clarifies stuff.. ;)

nuttyvarun Says
"SKILL".. countable or non-countable??

pj02 Says
Skill is non countable !!!

My understanding says that as long as you can convert any noun into its plural form, you can say it is countable.
skill(s) is therefore countable.

pj02 Says
It takes much skill to drive a truck !!! --> Un countable.

There is something else too in this example apart from the uncommon use of "that which".
This sentence is an example where we need to decide where the emphasis of the meaning is. Here the emphasis is on "defiance" which happens to be similar to the one in US ....
If we ignore this emphasis thing, A can as well be an answer but that would be incorrect.

Also, when we see 'similar" showing similarity between two items, more often than not, the correct form will be:

X similar to Y
similar X to Y --INCORRECT

very rare example..

The inhabitants of Somalia greeted the measures outlawing polygamy with a similar defiance that welcomed the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the nineteen-twenties.
a...
b. a similar defiance which welcomed
c. a similar defiance to what welcomed
d. a defiance similar to that which welcomed

e. the same defiance welcoming
try this.. lemme know if you see what I see as unique in this example.. anyway I shall share my thoughts later tomorrow.. ;)

IMO : D

We always say "that which" for that that --- Source Manhatten SC book.

Dude... why tomm.. wait.. Lets study whole night...

IMO : D

Gud example of 'that which' used together.

If you follow logically, it seems to be most plausible answer. Others are trying to say that the defiance caused prohibition of alcohol.......

A: At first look i feel her can not referback to possesive noun..i.e. Agatha Christie's travels....I know her should refer back to agatha christie.. But i feel the same error is in E.

E uses passive voice and it looks better however i feel A should be the answer.

Between A and E i will go with A.

My ans: E

A-> Here subject is Agatha christie's travel. the 1st her refers to Agatha christie while d 2nd her refers to Agatha christie's travel which is abs. wrong.
B-> awkward construction.. How come Agatha inspire mystery novels???
C-> same as B
D->awkward & wordy constuction..
Main concept behind is 'an object pronoun (her) can never refer to a possessive noun ( Agatha christie's )' . Just replace n try Agatha christie's in place of her in A & E.

I feel E is the best possible answer.
2 reasons:
1.resources are countable --> number of
time --> amount of
2. Rule :'As' is used to compare two clauses and Like' is used to comare two Nouns.

I will go with E.
C looks fantastic though... just because of presence of word "are" its eliminated.. else it would have been best...

I will say E...

I'll go wid E..
Needs a parallel construction. Amount of X.. number of Y..
Now C can be a probable ans. but we cant use like to compare two clauses.Like can be used to compare only Nouns.

Try to understand what i am saying...

if C is not having word "are" in it.. It will compare 2 nouns... So it will be best answer.

May be u r saying right, but i still feel 'are' is required cause if u add the hidden word 'related', it makes more sense.

As other performance indicators are ''related'', the growth rate of a start-up business is generally related to the amount of time and number of.....

Also comparison here is b/w the performance indicators, so i suspect usage of like. Maybe i have to go for lunch, cause empty stomach makes hollow noises πŸ˜‰

hahahaa :)

Ok rahul...I am trying to put my thoughts here:

As to compare two clauses :
1.other performance indicators are
2.the growth rate of a start-up business is.

So sentence becomes :
As other performance indicators are, the growth rate of a start-up business is generally related to the amount of time and number of

This is E. which we all marked as answer. Which should be correct too :)

Like to compare two nouns :
1.other performance indicators
2.the growth rate of a start-up business

So sentence becomes:
Like other performance indicators, the growth rate of a start-up business is generally related to the amount of time and number of

This is not in answer options... But this one is the best...
