Let me try to explain dis...
d structure of sentece is a giant fungus that is an .. blah blah and..spawned by....and extending..
Now spawned & extending are past participle and present participle respectively and both are parallel.
whenever there is a noun or adjective which modifies subject, present participle is used ie +ing.
whenever there is a noun or adjective which modifies object, past pariciple is used

Here, extend modifies giant fungus which is subject.therefore extending sud b used.
spawn modifies single fertilized spore which is object. therefore spawned sud b used.
n remember spawned and extending are parallel. is extending will violate d rule.. hope u'll get it....

thanks sdt83 !!!!! I'll remember that rule.

IMO:
1 - C, (Not very confident, but all other choices seem awkward)
2 - E, (companies's is correct and 'to profit' is parallel to 'to pay off'
1. A day-care discussion must begin with the fact ofthere being in America four and one-half million working women whose children under six years of age are being cared for by others.

2. A discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin with the fact of there being an independent Western Europe which now thinks of itself in trans-nationalist terms.
t

IMO - 1 = C; 2 = C. Similar construction and 'fact of there being' appears awkward.

1. In order to evenly and effectively paint a rough surface, it is necessary to sand it and apply primer before applying the paint.

IMO = A

2. As the etched lines on computer memory chips have become thinner and the chips circuits more complex,
both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive have vastly increased.

IMO = B

You are correct for both. It is A and B.

For the second one can you please expain your approach. ( Why not A or C ?)

so A and B it is

OA please !!

OA for these are C and D.

1. IMO the ans for the first one should be 'D' but since it contains "exists" and the subject is plural " Women" option D is not valid so the next best option is 'C'

Please post what do you think about this ?

..... there are in America ... construction somehow doesnt convince me

if somebody could shed some light on this OA please !!
You are correct for both. It is A and B.

For the second one can you please expain your approach. ( Why not A or C ?)

in option B .. it is the power of .... and power is the subject hence has is the correct verb

in every other option it is incorrect. i would suggest you to plug in the sentence and read the whole thing and B is the best sentence, with correct logical meaning.

2. As the etched lines on computer memory chips have become thinner and the chips' circuits more complex,
both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive have
vastly increased.

(A) the chips' circuits more complex, both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive have - both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive ... complete alters the meaning
(B) the chips' circuits more complex, the power of both the chips and the electronic devices they drive has - correctly attributes the changes to power and .. it is power that vastly increases .. therefore right
(C) the chips' circuits are more complex, both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive has - same mistake
(D) their circuits are more complex, the power of both the chips and the electronic devices they drive have - construction itself is wrong
(E) their circuits more complex, both the power of the chips and the electronic devices they drive have - construction itself is wrong

one can eliminate D E immediately

Among A, B, C

B conveys the correct meaning

Here is another one..

(B) crests and troughs that remain stationary although they are formed by rapidly moving air, are

Here the subject is resulting flow pattern , there fore verb shud be is and not are ... so A B and D are eliminated it

Between C and E ... E uses passive form .. so i'd rather go for C, which is nicely framed and the info between the comma, modifies "the resulting flow patterns''

Therefore Answer C, IMO

Cheers !!

C should be the answer.

3:2 split.
Singular " the resulting flow pattern" so " is " needed and not are. Eliminate A,B,and D.

Yup.. C is the correct answer.. I eliminated 3 on the basis on singular.. forgot to check Active/Passive.. :splat:
Thanks..
