GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

.
.
.
this is the expln,
.
I think that the answer is A. the idiom is 'consider.....to be'. On those lines i feel the answer should be A.
.
E is definitely out as 'are' doesnt logically fit in the sentence.
.
In C, 'as being' is wrong. In GMAT one has to watch out when the word 'being' is used. It is almost always wrong.
.
.
.
.
Hence adding a 'they' makes it wrong.

This is my view. Whats the correct answer?

And guys,
I got a message while quoting sumeet's question, saying that the message is too short. Please lengthen this message. Did anyone of you get it?

No sandy I ain't got that message ever! did you just discover a bug in vBSEO ? :wow:
I don't think so, it must be something with browsers... I am sure Jack (that's the name of our PG tech guy we met right? ) he must know...

Even I had thought of (A) but then I thought again, and saw that "consider..to be" in Manhattan to be wrong. So with (D) let's see who wins

@sumeet.tayal

D00d!!! Post the answers soon!!!

sheeeeesh...

Keep em' comin.

Cheers,
_Abhi.

Maybe dude, I am also confused now. Maybe someone else can throw some light on this. Find attached the section of Man SC which talks abt this idiom.

Also,

consider (used as a verb) "to be" seems redundant, and awkward. I have seen "considered to be" that too only used in special cases like... ummmm....

"Going to Mandir is considered to be sacred in India"

see the different connotations in both the SC and this sentence.

Anyways, still speculating... So never mind
Cheers,
Abhi.

A) it has made possible the raising of
B) has made possible fro them to raise
C) have made it possible to raise
D) have made it possible for raising
E) thus making it possible for them to raise

My pick C
has is out right away. have produced...so have made. now from C and D, -ing form unnecessary. infinitive form is better. so C.

2. In January 1994 an oil barge ran aground off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, leaking its cargo of 750000 gallons into the ocean, while causing the pollution of the city's beaches.
A) leaking its cargo of 750000 gallons into the ocean, while causing the pollution of
B) with its cargo of 750000 gallons leaking into the ocean, and it polluted
C) and its cargo of 750000 gallons leaked into the ocean, polluting
D) while it leaked its cargo of 750000 gallons into the ocean and caused the pollution of
E) so that its cargo of 750000 gallons leaked into the ocean, and they were polluting
My pick C
past followed by progressive tense is a logical tense sequence..showing cause and effect. C is best. A is out because both are -ing (progressive). B is out becuz wrong tense sequence. first -ing and then past...ridiculous.
D is out becuz while is used wrongly. E is out because its ridiculous..so that...sounds as if tha cargo wanted that to happen.

3. The Industrial Revolution, making it possible to mass-produce manufactured goods, was marked by their use of new machines, new energy sources, and new basic materials.
A) making it possible to mass-produce manufactured goods, was marked by their use of
B) making possible the mass production of manufactured goods, marked by the use of
C) which made it possible that manufactured goods were mass-produced, was marked by their using
D) which made possible the mass-production of manufactured goods, was marked by the use of
E) which made the mass production of manufactured goods possible and was marked by using
My pick D
proper tense usage and concise.

A is out ...use of their (plural) is wrong,.also -ing form is not appropriate.
B is awkward...non sense
C -ing form is wrong, long sentence....unnecessarily worded.
E -ing form again wrong and also the use of 'and' to join the sentence is wrong. the middle is portion is modifying phrase..telling about the industrial revolution....so shud be separated by a comma.

4. Studying the fruit fly, a household nuisance but a time-honored experimental subject, has enabled the secrets of how embryos develop to begin to be unraveled by scientists.

A) Studying the fruit fly, a household nuisance but a time-honored experimental subject, has enabled the secrets of how embryos develop to begin to be unraveled by scientists.
B) By the study of the fruit fly, a household nuisance and also a time-honored experimental subject, it was possible for the secrets of how embryos develop to begin to be unraveled by scientists.
C) By studying a household nuisance but a time-honored experimental subject, the fruit fly enabled scientist to begin to unravel the secrets of how embryos develop.
D) By studying the fruit fly, a household nuisance and also a time-honored experimental subject, the secrets of how embryos develop are beginning to be unraveled by scientist.
E) The study of the fruit fly, a household nuisance but a time-honored experimental subject, has enabled scientist to begin to unravel the secrets of how embryos develop.
this is E...no doubt ...all the others are ridiculous.
A...has enabled the secrets ...now what kind of usage is that?
B... it was possible for the secrets ...i dun wan to explain why this wrong!
C...the fruit fly is studyin here...rite..eh?
D...unnecessary use of -ing form..also the subject...that is the scientists are not emphasised..

E is clear, and well framed.

5) Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package even if they find a new job before they are terminated.
A) the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package
B) the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for it at the automobile company's severance package
C) their last scheduled day to collect, the automobile company offers its severance package to workers.
D) their last scheduled day in order to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers.
E) the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers.
My pick...E..
confusion was between D and E.

you see unlike..you know its a comparison...comaprison shud be made between similar things.

package to package...
A..wrong..package to worker..
B..wrong..package to workers..
C...wrong..package to company...
D...package to package...but meaning is disfigured...last day of workers...this is wrong...last day they are scheduled..is right...
E wins here!

Please post the right answers...if any of my answers are wrong we can hav further discussions..

Cheers!
1) Japans abundant rainfall and the typically mild temperature throughout most of the country have produced a lush vegetation cover and, despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils, it has made possible the raising of a variety of crops. A) it has made possible the raising of
B) has made possible fro them to raise
C) have made it possible to raise
D) have made it possible for raising
E) thus making it possible for them to raise

(A) Is grammatically incorrect. it has is incorrect, as the sentence refers to two things namely, rainfall, and mild temperature.
(B) Has the same tense error, also sounds like altered intent.
(C) Perfect. Have parallels, to raise is the correct verb form for this construction.
(D) for raising is awkward, and incorrect idiomatically.
(E) Doesnt gel with the earlier clause, thus reference is missing.

2)
In January 1994 an oil barge ran aground off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, leaking its cargo of 750000 gallons into the ocean, while causing the pollution of the citys beaches.

(A) Leaking.xyz..while causing the pollution of. Awkward construction. Misplaced modifier, redundant.
(B) Awkward parallel construction in the second clause. and it polluted also grammatically wrong.
(C) Perfect as all errors stand removed.
(D) Altered intent, pathetically redundant and misleading construction.
(E) Altered intent again.

3)
The Industrial Revolution, making it possible to mass-produce manufactured goods, was marked by their use of new machines, new energy sources, and new basic materials. A) making it possible to mass-produce manufactured goods, was marked by their use of

B) making possible the mass production of manufactured goods, marked by the use of
C) which made it possible that manufactured goods were mass-produced, was marked by their using
D) which made possible the mass-production of manufactured goods, was marked by the use of
E) which made the mass production of manufactured goods possible and was marked by using

(A) Tricky one! Looks like subject verb disagreement, also their reference is missing.
(B) making possible, marked by incorrect grammatically
(C) altered intent. Completely messy and redundant.
(D) Seems most correct. Grammar okay. Joining clause was marked by correctly refers to things to doolow.
(E) possible AND was marked awkward construction. seems incorrect.

4)

Tired of explaining by now
(E) Altered intent, wrong. (A) has enabled secrets misplaced modifier. Wrong. (B) Same error, also redundant. (C) Altered and funny intent. (D) Correct. Though I Am doubtful. Shheesh.

5) Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package even if they find a new job before they are terminated.

A) the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package
B) the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for it at the automobile companys severance package
C) their last scheduled day to collect, the automobile company offers its severance package to workers.
D) their last scheduled day in order to collect, the automobile companys severance package is available to workers.
E) the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile companys severance package is available to workers.
-

(A) last day scheduled to collect is wrong. Alters the meaning to be conveyed.
(B) Same error.
(C) Also another error is objects being compared are different. Severance package, Automobile company.
(D) Removes both these errors. This is the correct answer.
(E) Altered intent, though even this could be the answer, but I will go with (D).
