Hi sumeet,

1) First answer's C. Bcoz, "animal hides with woodwen frames" cannot be a "method to protect". It is the thing that protects. So, A and B are out. in D, "as a protection of" seems wrong. In E, "to protect" seems incomplete.

2) Second answer should be D. Becoz in ohter choices, the parallelism is not maintained. In A, B and C, it looks asthough the comparison is between "broad surface" and "series", which is incorrect. in E, "as against being" sounds incorret. And also, E has the typo..."being". Hence it is ruled out.

Today's quota:
Very tough!! And I am confused in atleast three...but I'll try. And I will try to giv explanations in a manner I think.

1.A report by the American Academy for the Advancement of Science has concluded that much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed comes from the incineration of wastes.
(A) much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed comes
(B) much of the currently uncontrolled dioxins that North Americans are exposed to come
(C) much of the dioxins that are currently uncontrolled and that North Americans are exposed to comes
(D) many of the dioxins that are currently uncontrolled and North Americans are exposed to come
(E) many of the currently uncontrolled dioxins to which North Americans are exposed come
A quick vertical scan will tell you that much vs many. 2-3 combo.
dioxins...ok...chemistry book said many chlorides, many oxides...so I would go for many. Also the plural s in dioxins makes sense with many.

D and E....mmmm...I see 'and' in D...not making sense...
E...my pick

2.A special Japanese green tea called genmai-cha contains brown rice and is considered as a delicacy fit for a gourmet by most Japanese, though it is virtually unavailable outside Yokohama.
(A) A special Japanese green tea called genmai-cha contains brown rice and is considered as a delicacy fit for a gourmet by most Japanese, though it is virtually unavailable outside Yokohama.
(B) Considered to be a delicacy fit for a gourmet by most Japanese, genmai-cha is a special green tea that contains brown rice, virtually unavailable outside Yokohama.
(C) A special Japanese green tea called genmai-cha contains brown rice and is considered a gourmet delicacy by most Japanese, though it is virtually unavailable outside Yokohama.
(D) Most Japanese consider genmai-cha, a special green tea which contains brown rice, as a delicacy virtually unavailable outside Yokohama.
(E) Though virtually unavailable outside Yokohama, most Japanese consider genmai-cha, a special green tea that contains brown rice, a gourmet delicacy.
Consider.....bammm...idioms!! okie so I try to remember what is it with consider...ohh yess!! the correct idiomatic usage is consider X Y (without to be) :)

Done!!! C and E left....But E has a problem!!
Though virtually unavailable outside Yokohama, most Japanese
Here the modifying phrase seems to modify Japanese....which is wrong!!
Then C it is.

3)A study commissioned by the Department of Agriculture showed that if calves exercise and associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do those raised in confinement.
(A) associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do
(B) associated with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight quicker than
(C) associate with other calves, they required less medication and will gain weight quicker than do
(D) associate with other calves, they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do
(E) associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than
Okkk...quick vertical scan tells us...associated vs associate.
Exercise is the word in the correct portion...so associate shud be correct as well.

So C D E. oh great! eliminated 2 choices. look further. required vs require....have required is ridiculous..
C and E. C has faulty parallel structure. (see red part)
E is perfect!

4)A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.
(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle,
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
Long statement...aaaarghh!! Hey but look closely!! The middle part is a modifying phrase...so basically if u remove that part....it shud still make sense!!
Lets try!
A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.

What?? the substance (derivative) is cultivated!!! No way!! Ok so periwinkle is cultivated..rite??
Lets eliminate!
Man!!! All are eliminated except E!!!
Howzzz that!
E it is!!

5)According to a study published by Dr. Myrna Weissman, only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four.
(A) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 had suffered major depression by the age of seventy-five; of those born since 1955, six percent had become depressed by age twenty-four
(B) only one percent of Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five; if they are born since 1955, six percent become depressed by age twenty-four
(C) of Americans born before 1905, only one percent of them have suffered major depression by age seventy-five, but six percent of those born since 1955 do by the age of twenty-four
(D) major depression is suffered by the age of seventy-five by only one percent of Americans born before 1905, and by age twenty-four by the six percent born since 1955
(E) Americans born before 1905 suffer major depression by the age of seventy-five only one percent of the time, but six percent of those born since 1955 did so by age twenty-four
On first look I see nothing wrong...may be the tense order...but that also seems ok...lets hunt!
The red portions are obv wrong...
In B, past tense..so suffered...not suffer.
in C do cannot be a substitute for suffer.
in E one percent of time!! whats that!
In D..the construction is ridiculous..
A is okay!!

6)According to a survey of graduating medical students conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges, minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice in socioeconomically deprived areas.
(A) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice
(B) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than other graduates who plan on practicing
(C) minority graduates are nearly four times as likely as other graduates to plan on practicing
(D) it is nearly four times more likely that minority graduates rather than other graduates will plan to practice
(E) it is nearly four times as likely for minority graduates than other graduates to plan to practice
Ok a quick vertical scan tells me...whether to go for the options starting with minority or starting with it.
It is ambiguous...what does it refer to...??
I wud eliminate D and E. It is almost always wrong. And here I cant even find an antecedent!

A B C...
more than...or as X as...which one...
dunno :(
B doesnt sound right. A has are nearly four times more likely than are
B misses the are

Now I can employ one more method to choose between A and C
I can shorten the statement and remove the comparison part and it shud stand alone.
A = minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice

C = minority graduates are nearly four times as likely as other graduates to plan on practicing

Which one makes more sense??
I guess C..likely to...that sounds correct...rite?
So I will go for C.

These are tuff...so no wonder if I get them wrong...but the analysis I hav done...I think is gud enuf to get me on the right path...
I took quite a lot of time...and certainly wasnt under one minute per SC....but these were tuff...and I am out of touch I guess...too many excuses :D

Cheers!

an extraction rate clearly modifies six billion cubic feet a day
m not 100% confident abt this explanation...can anyone come up with something else !!!!!

in E one percent of time!! whats that!
In D..the construction is ridiculous..
A is okay!!

Cheers!

I think the answers are as follows:

1) Answer is D.....

It is a case of parallelism. I am a bit confused by this SC. Hope its right.

2) Answer is C.....

The sentence A is totally absurd. It says that the project was initialted five centuries after "the europeans arrived in 1992". Now wat does that mean???

In B, it says that the "100 million investment was initiated" which is wrong coz the project is initiated and not the investment.

In D and E, pledging a "100 million investment........the initiation...." which is wrong.

3) Answer is A..........

I am bit confused bw A and E. Can anyone explain?? Mucool u there??

4) Answer is B.........

It s a case of subject-verb agreement. The "federal papers ............. represent". So this eliminates the choices A, C and D. We are left with B and E. Now, B has a correct idiom. So it wins.

Could you post the answers plz?

First of all, there's no contrast in this statement whatsoever. So chuck the 'although', 'but'. thats only to confuse.
A B C gone!
E is not complete...try plugging it in and u get nothin.
D is the answer.

2)Although all the proceedings of the Communist party conference held in Moscow were not carried live, Soviet audiences have seen a great deal of coverage.
(A) all the proceedings of the Communist party conference held in Moscow were not carried live

(C) all the Communist party conference Moscow proceedings have not been carried alive
(D) not all the Communist party conference Moscow proceedings have been carried alive
(E) not all the proceedings of the Communist party conference held in Moscow were carried live

This one was tuff. all vs not all???

consider this...
all x not Y (seems that none of X's are Y
)
not all X is Y (makes more sense here...some may be Y, but some are)
With this I think we can eliminate A B C...lets keep A ...if we get nothin gud in D and E. Cuz B C are anyways ridiculous.

D is again awkwardly framed.

Between A and E, I wud select E...

3)After this years record-shattering January performance in Madison Square Garden, the ensemble were touted as the countrys best new group in decades; no critic or reviewer had anything but praise for the young musicians.
(A) the ensemble were touted as the countrys
(B) the ensemble was touted as the countrys
(C) the country touted the ensemble like the
(D) touting the ensemble as the countrys
(E) they were touting the ensemble as the countrys

CDE are ridiculous...jus try saying them by plugging them in.
A and B...aq uick vertical scan says...were vs was...
ensemble is singular collective noun...was is gud...
B it is.

4 )After the Colonial periods 50 percent mortality rate, life expectancy improved for children, but as late as the nineteenth century about one child in three died before reaching the age of six.
(A) After the Colonial periods 50 percent mortality rate, life expectancy improved for children, but

(D) While there was an improvement in life expectancy for children after the 50 percent mortality rate of the Colonial period, still
(E) Despite childrens life expectancy improvement from the Colonial periods 50 percent mortality rate,

See the reddened portion...in A B D E...the mortality rate is for the colonial period...huh!

C straightaway.

5)After Queen Isabella asked Admiral Columbus to describe the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti), which was newly discovered, he had reached for a sheet of paper, crumpled it, and said, It looks like thatbeyond the mountains, more mountains.

(C) Queen Isabella asked Admiral Columbus to describe the newly discovered island of Hispaniola (now Haiti), then he reached
(D) When asked by Queen Isabella to describe the newly discovered island of Hispaniola (now Haiti), Admiral Columbus reached
(E) After Queen Isabella had asked Admiral Columbus to describe the discovery of the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti), he had reached

he had reached??? whats that?? perfect tense is not required at all. its awkward.
You can see the problem with A B C E all have awkward tense formations...unnecessary perfect tenses...or continuous tense.
D is clear and concise. tense is perfect and conveys the sense of timing very well.

6)After July, anyone disposing of or servicing refrigerators must capture the chlorofluorocarbons in the refrigerant chemicals.
(A) anyone disposing of or servicing
(B) those who dispose or service
(C) anyone disposing of or who services
(D) the disposal or repair of
(E) someone who disposes or repairs

here the doer is not important and uknown...so an indefinite pronoun shud be used...anyone is okay here...

D is out...cuz no doer here...the process cannot capture..
C is out..wrong parallel structure
problem with B and D is they do not convey the sense of timing very well...
say it in your mind...anyone found making noise will be punished...anyone found cheating in the exam will be expelled...we dont say..anyone who cheats will be expelled....or anyone who is a cheat will be expelled....
You get what i am trying to say here...
I think a progressive (continuous tense) makes more sense in this context.
A is gud enuf.

Hope that helps...
