my pick is E. Using expletive "IT", which has no clear antecedent but conveys the meaning very well. Also see the parallelism "hazard for ancient romans..... hazard for modern americans". Only B and E has "for". B is wrong in parallelism and use of "as" answer is E.
Just a minor point. In the example you've quoted:

If paraguay wins world cup, I will dance without cloths on streets.

Both the 'parts' of the sentence are actually talking about future events.

Consider this:

If God is so compassionate, why is there so much poverty and misery?

Whenever India plays with six specialist batsmen, India looses.

Ohhhhhhh goodness!! i didnt realize that when i wrote... u r a real guru here. both events are in future... I think thats what conditional phrase means, to talk about future right? but u also mentioned another usage of if... so ultimately it all comes down to meaning of the sentence again as usual.

A: incorrect because of confusing and unclear sentence structure
B. incorrect because of the tense in "The domestic cat descended from...". this part cannot be in past simple tense. We are describing the characteristics of the cat, which is present even today, hence we must have this sentence in present perfect tense.
C. incorrect. "Desending from the ..." and "and has been scarcely sufficient..." make it a wrong choice. "has been scarcely sufficient..." seem to modify the cat. Hence wrong sentence.
D. Correct choice.
E. incorrect. Wrong use of tense (domestic cat descended from the...), wordy (and one which
scarcely...)

Hence my answer is D.

A --> Sentence structure needs revision.
B --> Sentence looks a phrase. Incomplete.
C --> A close competition, but in this part of the sentence "...its genetic evolution and has been scarcely..." the AND looks odd.
D --> Seems perfect :)
E --> Odd sentence structure.
