@all...i have done enough research on infinitive vs gerund issue and my conclusion is given below...
if u search dictionary for polydactyly u will find
polydactyl definition (mind you not-ly)
polydactyl (pli daktl)
adjective
having more than the normal number of fingers or toes
Origin: Fr polydactyle noun
a polydactyl person or animal...
u can see that exact phrase, as in the question, is mentioned as an adjective..
also, u can see this link Infinitive Subjects: referring to activities
where it is mentioned that infinitives are generally used for defining things...which is precisely what the sentence in question trying to do...defining a condition...
thus, i'd still say to have more than the normal number of fingers or toes is termed as polydactyly is correct...

Dude these are quite good, and require utmost concentration. Where in teh world did you get these from? I think we need these, not from a grammar standpoint, but more to keep those wheels in motion!! Do pls advice the source.

I got 2 and 5 wrong... 5 is just bad luck, unless there is a logical explanation.
1. Need Has, due to 'slew of'. Has not succeeded in engendering this and reviving that, will get you the ans
2. No idea why E, A is better I feel. Why to use 'and' again? Furthermore, if you want to use 'by improving' you should use 'by' everywhere else to keep the parallelism intact, i.e. by creating this, by by launching that.... and by improving
3. elucidates, explains and discusses - this is the structure and will help to eliminate B and E. C and D go for want of 'which', (what serves, the book or the man? ) .. C uses two sentences without hi-lighting the subject. A remains.
4. A and D - wrong strucutre, if they wanted to use they should have written like this - the purring of a cat, although thought of as a sign of contentment blah blah..E - wrong for 'purring'. Should use 'related to' so C takes over.
5. At a second glance, I suppose C would have been correct without the colon.
6. E is not correct as you can't use 'return' and 'back' together.
'that' is required because the focus is centering on someone's claims that..... So, A takes over.
7. structure should be - the owners receive A and avoid B (no comma needed), leads to B and E. In B, 'was' is not the right usage, because we are trying to take about a situation that would have ocurred.
Although I might wonder if a better way to phrase this was - to avoid abc that would have occurred had the company been setup as a C-corp.

Yeah these are quite good and as a matter of fact all the sections from this particular source were challenging. This is a site called GMAT Prep From Platinum GMAT - Premier GMAT Prep Resources where you can take free tests and practices which is really cool. And their scoring is pretty accurate. Also you can find the explanations there which are really good. I think I haven't found such good explanations anywhere (including ManG).

For the benefit of all, here are the places where you can find free tests and practices (I found these links in some forum...can't recall which one ..could even be PG):

1) princeton -http://www.princetonreview.com/business/gmat-practice-tools.aspx
2)Kaplan - http://www.kaptest.com/Business/GMAT...cticeGMAT.html
3)crack-gmat GMAT test preparation: Dowloadable GMAT tests and Online practice
4)Manhattan GMAT Free GMAT Sample Test ManhattanGMAT
5)veritas - Free GMAT Practice Test GMAT Prep Courses and MBA Admissions Consulting 6)peterson - Sample GMAT Test Questions
7)gmat live - Welcome to GMATLive | GMAT Preparation, GMAT Test Prep, Craking the GMAT
800score - GMAT / GRE Prep Courses. Download 5 GMAT / GRE Practice Tests.
9)4tests - 4Tests.com - Your Free Online Practice Exam Site!
10)GMAT score - Best GMAT Course, Free GMAT Tests, Sample GMAT Essay, Preparation Tips
11)platinum GMAT - GMAT Practice Test - Free & Accurate
12)Bell Curves - https://gmat.bellcurves.com
13)GMAT club - GMAT Tests | GMAT Practice Tests The GMAT Club

And the kaplan has free events once in 2 weeks or so where they have a test for everyone and then they discuss the questions. Free of cost..which is also pretty good but the way they scoring isnt good but it is definitely good practice and they give percentile per question which is neat i think. the next test is on the 7th august. I think the more the number of guys taking the test better would be the percentile.

So far VERITAS and PLATINUM have been a real find for me. Hope you all benefit from this.

Thank you,

My answers and explanations in BOLD.

1) During the early months of 2009, some economists concluded that the slew of U.S. government programs created during the fall of 2008 to stabilize an economy marked by an absence of credit, a wave of enormous asset write downs, a precipitous decline in housing prices, and a historic loss of consumer confidence has not succeeded in engendering healthy intra-bank credit flows and reviving depressed equity prices.

D) have not succeeded in engendering healthy intra-bank credit flows and to revive depressed equity prices
E) has not succeeded in engendering healthy intra-bank credit flows along with a revival of depressed equity prices

"a slew of...." therefore the verb has to be "has" .. and out of all the options A is maintains the brevity.

2)By confronting a devastated economy through actions such as creating the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, opening the Securities and Exchange Commission, suspending the gold standard, launching massive public works programs, and improving the morale of a demoralized nation through his fireside chats, First Inaugural address, and other motivational speeches, Franklin Roosevelt both lifted the spirits of Americans across the country and set the United States on a course that helped propel it out of the Great Depression.

B) and launching massive public works programs, and improving the morale of a demoralized nation through his fireside chats
C) and launching massive public works programs, and by improving the morale of a nation demoralized through his fireside chats
D) and through the launch of massive public works programs, and by improving the morale of a demoralized nation through his fireside chats
E) and launching massive public works programs, and by improving the morale of a demoralized nation through his fireside chats
2 different set of events are being described here ... option E correctly captures this.

3)In his best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma, which social critics see as yet another piece of evidence to support their thesis of a burgeoning interest in natural food among Americans, Michael Pollan elucidates industrial farming, explains organic farming, and discusses hunting and gathering food for oneself.

Modifiers are correctly used in option A

4)The purring noise of a cat, although most people think that cats purr because they are content, is actually involuntary and is not directly related with the emotion of the cat.
A) The purring noise of a cat, although most people think that cats purr because they are content, is actually involuntary and is not directly related with the emotion of the cat.
B) Although most people think that cats purr because they are content, the purring noise of a cat is actually involuntary and is not directly related with the emotion of the cat.
C) Although most people think that cats purr because they are content, the purring noise of a cat is actually involuntary and is not directly related to the emotion of the cat.

E) Although most people think that cats are purring because they are content, the purring noise of a cat is actually involuntary and is not directly related with the emotion of the cat.

To the best of my knowledge the sentence should always start with Although (please correct me about this if I am wrong). Out of all the options that begin with Although, only C is concise and correct.

5) Heightened land erosion, caused by human activity, has many negative effects including the following: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, imbalance of the fish population, and the introduction of harmful chemicals to the ocean's environment.
A) including the following: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, imbalance of the fish population, and the introduction of harmful chemicals to the ocean's environment.
B) including: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, imbalance of the fish population, and harmful chemicals entering the ocean's environment.
C) including: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, imbalance of the fish population, and the introduction of harmful chemicals to the ocean's environment.
D) including the following: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, imbalance of the fish population, and harmful chemicals entering the oceans environment.
E) including the following: algae blooms, coral reef destruction, certain fish populations rising, certain fish populations falling, and the introduction of harmful chemicals to the oceans environment.

Parallelism is maintained only in A

6)After a storied investment bank recently fired its CEO and hired an outspoken and flamboyant replacement, members of the news media centered their stories on the replacement's claims that, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, he can return the investment bank to profitability.
A) that, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, he can return the investment bank to profitability
B) of the ability, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, of returning the investment bank to profitability
C) of being able to return, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, the investment
D) to be, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, able to return the investment bank to profitability
E) that, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, he is capable of returning the investment bank back to profitability

meaning and simplicity is maintained in A. Rest of the options just sound wrong.

7)The owners of a fast growing tech start-up in Newport Beach organized the firm as a Limited Liability Company (LLC). The owners receive considerable personal liability protection from potential lawsuits, and they also avoid some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company was set up as a C-corporation.
A) protection from potential lawsuits, and they also avoid some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company was set up as a C-corporation
B) protection from potential lawsuits and avoid some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company was set up as a C-corporation
C) protection from potential lawsuits, avoiding some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company was set up as a C-corporation
D) protection from potential lawsuits, and avoid some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company were set up as a C-corporation
E) protection from potential lawsuits and avoid some egregious double-taxation that would occur if the company were set up as a C-corporation

Only confusion in this one is choosing between D and E. I choose E because the comma tends to change the meaning here. Since we are not listing A, B, & C. there is no requirement of a comma in this case. (please correct me if i am wrong)
