"a slew of...." therefore the verb has to be "has" .. and out of all the options A is maintains the brevity.

To the best of my knowledge the sentence should always start with Although (please correct me about this if I am wrong). Out of all the options that begin with Although, only C is concise and correct.

About 6, I think the question is wrongly phrased.
To me, the clause 'based upon his past work at a private equity firm' is mis-placed. The sentence should rather be:
After a storied investment bank recently fired its CEO and hired an outspoken and flamboyant replacement, members of the news media centered their stories on the replacement's claims, based upon his past work at a private equity firm, that he can return the investment bank to profitability.
Here the clause 'based upon......' gives more info about the 'claims'.
Any arguments are most welcome.

The widely accepted big bang theory holds that the universe began in an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago and has been expanding ever since.
This is qn no. 10 from the OG and the solution says that this is indeed the correct construction...my doubt is if "began" and "has been expanding" are verb phrases to describe the same subject universe shoudn't they be parallel?
It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits
(A) the frequency of inventory turnovers can be
(B) the frequency of inventory turnovers is often
(C) the frequency with which the inventory turns over is often
(D) how frequently is the inventory turned over are often
(E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be
ans . must b E but may b c also pls tell me correct one
IMHO...
"It is well known in the supermarket industry that... crucial to profits" is the main clause and the subordinate clause has 2 components:
1. how items are placed on shelves
2. how frequently the inventory turns over
Since 1. starts with how.. the second part should do so as well.. that rules out A,B and C.
Option D is passive while 'items are placed' is active.. Hence D is also ruled out.. That leaves us with only option E!!

I guess NO.
Though the verbs describe the same subject, the time of action varies. For the universe to expand, it has to "begin" first and only then expand. So, the universe began first and has been expanding since its beginning. The expansion process is still ON. So, parallelism will not work and OG's structure is fine. 😃

Yup. It began some time back and has been expanding ever since. No parallelism here.
Cheers.

Hey phemanth,
I really appreciate your generosity. And, at the same time, I, once again, fail to understand the structure of this sentence.

For the answer of this question, can we say accidents happen?

Anyway, thanks for the questions. They were as clear as mud!

Hi friends,

I have query regarding my SC preparation strategy:

I am done with Manhattan Sentence Correction guide and some other couple of SC notes So as far as preparation material is concern I have enough amount of that.

Now to start with practice questions,I started with OG12, solved first 50 and got some 40 correct.

Then i thought of doing practice questions from some other source so that I can keep OG 12 for later use.Hence I tried my hands on 1000SC. My accuracy in 1000SC was quite low as compared to OG, moreover I felt that since 1000Sc does not provide with explanation I should do questions with available explanations to improve my concepts further.

Please suggest some source of good SC practice questions with explanation (either softcopy or hardcopy)
Or please guide me if my strategy needs some changes.

thanks

For me 1000SC has been really useful. I know that it is not the most perfect document to gain confidence but it still has the variety and gives great exposure. Mostly 1000SC is a huge collection of all the SC questions from all over so I find that many of the big institutes' questions are found in 1000SC too. So, you have the explanations if you can patiently look for them in the various forums (google it).
Kaplan 800 and premier books have good stuff.
Manhattan's question bank and papers are solid.
GROCKIT is the new thing. Grockit Test Prep - SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE, and LSAT. I am just addicted to it.
Lots of practice PDFs can be found by searching "properly".
Thank you,
Hemanth

Yeah, thats right. OG has easier questions than other materials. I suggest you to practice from Kaplan (Premier and then 800) though 800 is kind of over the top. But it will give you something better to practice. But 1000SC is also a very good source. What I used to do is to do the questions from 1000SC, check if I got it right or not, if got it wrong and not convinced I used to discuss it here in PG.
the best point with 1000 SC is the collection it gives you at one place cannot be found anywhere else.
All the best.

Talking about year, so 'has' should be used.
and what is easier to determine are many, so 'are'.
All in all, A appears right.
According to me 'B' is the right ans.

reason: 1.'The exact year' match with 'has been difficult'
2. 'easier to determine' match with 'is the purpose'
The Answer is B.
 My explanation:
The exact year.. has to be singular. This rules out C, D & E.
From the remaining options, 'the purpose' is what is being determined, so it is also singular! Hence A is also ruled out.
So u r left with B.

B for bingo...b for bulls eye. good job.
Can someone please explain this:
but what is much easier to determine are the purpose of their existence, the religious significance that the drawings on the walls of the caves held, and the order in which the caves were constructed.
Why is "are" incorrect?
I believe the correct construction is "what is much easier to determine are the X, the Y and the Z".
Is the list that I have created wrong?
In this case we are determining only 1 thing: 'purpose' of existence.

The remaining part 'the religious significance that the drawings on the walls of the caves held, and the order in which the caves were constructed.' is just explaining what the purpose is and is not other things in parallel with the purpose!
Hope this helps
