GMAT Study Group - April 2013

Hello Everyone,

I am Mohnish Khiani.I just went through some of the posts here
and wanted to have some of your suggestions.I have completed my B.Tech in IT from a deemed university 6 months ago.I am currently working as a Software Engineer.I want to pursue MBA in Finance from a very good university.I have given my CAT 2012 this year and I am expecting around 85 percentile in it.I know that won't be sufficient but I will prepare much harder for CAT 2013.I am going to start my GMAT preparation now and wanted some of your advice.I know that I am starting late and should have started the preparation during my graduation itself. But I have only 4 months of preparation time with me as I have to get back to my CAT preparation then. These are my doubts :

1.I have already studied for CAT.So how much is the CAT preparation going to help me?

2.Would 4 months of preparation be enough for me?

3.As I am already acquainted with the topics, should I join a coaching institute or else just take their test series.

4.If I should join an institute or take only the test series, which institute would be better Princeton Review or Manhattan Review?

If you could give me any other preparation guidelines too that would be great.

I have no one to guide me so asking you for a few suggestions.

Thank you everyone for going through this and helping me.

@raghu_raman Thanks Raghu for Sharing this link, helps a lot! :)

@cancerian167 Hi, yes in OG11 you won't be able to find Logical reasoning part as it has introduced in OG13. If you have OG11, start doing it (Quant or Verbal) - Take a note "concept matters a lot, we should be good in concepts..." Subsequently you will get OG13, check earlier posts..!
@mohnish_khiani Hi Mohnish...
Dude if you are expecting 85% in CAT then i presume you are sound in fundamentals of quant. and if one were to compare the toughness level of quant between GMAT and CAT, CAT would be tougher... So my assumption is your quant is done ( You might need some brush up)...
Verbal - Verbal section is much more comprehensive in GMAT than CAT so you will have to put some extra effort for Verbal.
1) So in and all , CAT preparation is going to help you a lot for GMAT.
2) Yes, My sense is sincere effort of 4 months would yield you above expectation results.
3) My opinion - You should not go for Coaching.. Download Manhatten material for GMAT and Official Guide and start your preparation and towards the end of third month join some good test series.
4) Would request other puys to comment.. I am not aware about it.

Hope it helps.

Surana

@leonidas. hi thanks for your enouraging response..I happen to be one of the founding members, so will certainly like to know more about your experience on using the tool...

a)was it convenient

b)are you looking for some more features

c) anything else you would like to suggest to make awaRatr better

Also let's spread the word about this tool, as the more it is used the better the tool gets at rating, as it is based on a self learning AI neural network

Hi All,

As a plan to crack GMAT with 750 I have started gathering some information about the books , the study structure , etc...

Below are few important information and link that I would like to share with my friends :
____________________________________________________________________________

BOOKS TO BE USED:
-----------------------

1.OG
2.Princeton review
3.kaplan
4.Kaplan 800
5.Of course, Power prep

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF BOOKS:
-------------------------------------

1.OG: All you guyz out there take my word for that, that use this book like a "GRANTH"..I mean it especially for verbal as it very close to the REAL GMAT..Do all the questions for verbal as it is the mirror image of the questions that you get in the REAL G....

2.Princeton review: Well the fundas given in this book are really grt so learn all the fundas but beware of the fact that this book is only for people who are looking to get score in the bracket of 630 to 670...So all you guyz aiming for 700+ score keep on reading..

3.Kaplan: Yes guyz believe me this is really good especially the hard questions...Remember the more comfortable you are with hard questions the more your score in REAL G.... Especially for QUANT.

4.kaplan 800: you are gonna get some real SUCKING questions in this book but I would recommend you guys to atleast go through it once..

Hey Leonidas,

Firstly would like to thank you for having started this thread... I am planning on taking up GMAT, I am still in the process of identifying which would be the right coaching centre ... I reside at bangalore , would be great if you could help me out with some coaching centers ...I would be taking up the week end classes and would like to give the GMAT asap ..

@amit.suri Hi Amit... I am also in Bangalore... Heard about these coaching institutes:

1) Sandeep Gupta Coaching - Heard its very good if you have okiesh typish basics. many ppl recommended me this coaching.... Fees 25-26k
2) Priceton coaching - one of my friend joined this coaching and gave a very mixed reaction. Fees 19k-20k
3) TIME - again very mixed reaction. concern is that most of the faculty shifted to Vista Mind. Earlier i had joined TIME for CAT coaching and i felt that its not good for Beginner. Fees 19-20k
4) Knewton online classes : They claim to give u back your entire fees amount if your score doesnt improve by atleast 50 points. I liked this and heard they are pretty good. Only concern - online classes . fees i guess 16-18k

After chatting with many people i realized that at the end of the day its you, who have to buckle up and study, coaching will give you only continuation and some feeling ki arey yaar padhte hai

So based on all the chatting feedback with ppl who have given GMAT i opted for Career launcher primarily on account of lower fees. 15k

Would like to clarify if you may have further query :

Regards
Surana

@ Surana - Hows CL faculty in verbal ?

I am facing a typical issue of doing well on the hard book/paper as in MGMAT tests but when the additional questions which have to be done in front of the monitor/sysytem - I am struggling for concentration.

Anybody else feeling the same or any suggestions please.

@rendezvous_deepak - Yesterday was the first class for verbal and i couldn't attend. U can come for one demo class and then take decision.
