Just took my GMAT and was pretty disappointed. I got 680 (V-34 + Q-49). Planning to take it up again.
After writing the test I feel that I haven't learnt from my mistakes over the month of study I put in. I guess I need to analyze the SC mistakes all the more critically.
I am in Chennai and I need to start mugging again (self study) and I am looking to interact with someone to discuss the SC and CR problems, which, I feel, is the best way to learn.
All the best and feel free to ping with any tough question challenges.
Tx.

Used Manhattan SC, which is very recommended, and I agree. This is a book that puts stuff straight. The princeton review verbal workout is pretty good. It focuses more on cracking the exam than understanding all the grammar details. Most of the reading that I did is around SC as I thought I am good at RC, CR and Quant.
I did all OG-Verbal questions and got at least 90% of the questions correct and so am kind of confused what went wrong in the exam.
For sure the clock did get to me. I know I made a few silly mistakes in Quant and I am unable to figure out where I went wrong in verbal. I will try to in my second attempt.
So to wrap up - OG Verbal, OG, Manhattan SC, Princeton tests, Kaplan Tests, Manhattan Online CATS (real good) and Powerprep (GMAC's test). Oh..and the princeton smart grammar MP3s. There are 4 files each of about half hour and they are good travel mates (in train, bus..etc).
Still confused but I think I know what to do next. I am hopeful it will work. If anyone's got fundaes, let me know.
Thanks.

Fuzzy, I am hearing a lot about Kaplan. What is this book? I have a kaplan high score CD but that is for practice and I didn't realize it was this good for verbal.
Can you please point me out to the one that you are referring?

I suggest, Manhattan SC and CR bible.

Thanks a lot and good luck.

I am referring Kaplan's GMAT premier 2010 edition.
It has the full syllabus covered in it. Just go any bookstore and check the book. It is my personal choice not sure if it would be of any good to you.

Apart from this, I prefer OG Verbal, OG, Manhattan SC and CR,Princeton Review VA.
To test your preparation I think Power Preps and Online CATs are best.

I would like to know ,what are you guys referring for your preparation.

Rajiv,

I believe CAT and GMAT preparations are strategically different. In GMAT You will find QA easier and VA harder than CAT.
For CR, though the basic may seems similar but the question pattern is different.
I would suggest you to find your preference, and if it is CAT then take CAT seriously and then try for GMAT since you can take up GMAT anytime in the year.

Thanks,

Hey Guys,

Anyone interested in group study? I am planning to give my GMAT by Aug end or early September.

I stay in Thiruvanmayur (Chennai).

Would be great if we can meet up somewhere. What do you guys say?

PM your contact number please.

Thanks.

Thanks Fuzzy. I looked up the book and it looks pretty solid. I might buy one. I have a softcopy of the 2009 edition. Do you think that is sufficient or do you feel that having the CD and online access is really the whole point of this premier edition?

I am taking GMAT on the 26th August again.

Hey,
Group study is a good idea only when people are really serious about it.
We can go for group study, but before that we must cover at least the basics (of every topic i.e full syllabus).Last year we took up group study for CAT preparation, but it was not fruitful for all.

I think this is time to introduce us to each other. It will be helpful if we know our background and the challenges that we are going to face while taking admission.Lets start with me.

I am working as software engineer (the most common MBA entity).
I have almost 4yrs of experience. I have tried CAT for the 1st time last year.
Though score was not so bad as per the preparation from my side, but overall experience was not good.

I am really serious about GMAT and I am targeting Fall 2011 admission.

No I dont think that having the CD and online access is the only stuff with this book.Even I haven't try the online thing yet as too many things make me confuse. But the book is of real stuff,if you have any copy of the book just have an overall look.

Since your exam date is just a few weeks away, I would suggest you not to take up any new things or concept. All most all the books have its own way of teaching. I believe if you follow one or two with proper dedication it would do good.

All the best for your exam.
Do share your experience with us.

Thanks,

I have around 5.5 years experience, which includes 2 yrs in service industry (NIIT Ltd) and 3 years as Tech Lead (Java + PHP). I've taken a break from work to give my GMAT and targeting Fall 2011.

Probably, we should have a schedule as to when we can start group study.
BTW, I've already registered for the exam, but thinks din't work out good for me. So, planning to push it to Aug end or early September. Would be great if you guys can quickly let me know what you guys think. I have time only till this weekend for rescheduling without losing the entire $250. 😃

It is better to appear exam when you are 99.99 % satisfied and confident with your preparation. It is always good to take your own time for preparation and get a good score rather than compromising with a not-so-good one.

I have 7 years of work exp. I am up for group study if we have fixed objective. For GMAT there isn't much to prepare except for practice and discussing those problems. I am up for SC/CR practice sessions.

For the exam, how have your scores been? I can tell you based on that.
More importantly... how many in each of those tests have you been getting wrong? Give me a section wise split up (e.g.: SC- 12/17, CR-15/16, RC-5/10, Quant - 30/37).

If you are getting around 680-720 you are good and you can give a shot else you should postpone and think about improving your accuracy.

Thanks.
