I am Pritesh Vora and plan to take GMAT in June 09. I am glad to join this post and would like to participate activelyy.
I am about to start the preparation afresh from this week. I have working for 3 years in TCS and have not been in touch with any form of learning except those required to stay in the company. :)
I intend to start with OG. Is this a good idea or would you recommend something else? How much does it help to join a classroom coaching for GMAT ? If Yes, Which institues would be recommended?

I will also not recommend u to join any classes.. but in the end its ur decision. if u feel tht ur office is hectic enough to leave u tired all day then obviously der is no time left for u to join classes... if u feel the need to join classes bcz u may not be able to study regularly then u shld join classes.. I personally feel tht classes are only helpful in a way tht they can make things regular for u (if u attend the classes seriously enough.. :D) else der seems to be no need.. when u have any queries u can put it down here on pg and get answers with explanations!! 😃
Finally i could sit for 2 hours to study and i feel i like i have done something great..
Started with OG 11 Complete, reading comprehension.. Seeing ppl fearing Verbal so much i decided to take hardest first.. There is not much of lessons kind of stuff on reading comprehension in OG 11 but whtever was der seemed enough.. 4 pages was all for the Reading comprehension theory thing.. Did tht - seemed pretty ok..
The imp points i felt were:
1) Verbal section in GMAT measure your ability to read and comprehend written material, to reason and evaluate arguments and to correct written material to conform to standard written English. Neither the passages not the questions assume knowledge of the topics discussed. 2) Reading comprehension passaged are upto 350 words long. Topics: Social sciences, humanities, the physical or biological sciences and such business related fileds as marketing, economics and human resource management.
6 kinds of RC questions 1) Main Idea - Main idea or the central point of the passage. 2) Supporting Ideas - Specific content of arguments presented by the author in support of his or her views. 3) Inference - Ideas or meanings that must be inferred from the information that is directly stated in the passage. 4) Applying information to a contexxt outside the passage itself - Unlike inference questions, application questions use ideas or situations NOT taken from the passage. 5) Logical Structure - Questions on the structure of the passage like how the passage is constructed, does it define, compare or contrast, present a new idea or refute an idea and so on 6) Style and tine - Expression of the passage, whether it is critical, questioning, objective, enthusiastic.. etc..
I then solved a couple of the passages and it was an ok task.. I guess I solved the easiest of the passages.. Will take up complicated one's as i go further.. :)

Hi Monal You have taken the right approach. Its important to meet like minded people from time to time and get insights at what is happening. For your profile, imho, you should not go for a regular course. You should rather focus on something like a bootcamp or crash course. Suggest that you PM psychodementia or reachnagraj as they have a lot of insight on GMAT Prep. psychodementia himself conducts bootcamps in Bangalore and reachnagraj has access to a coach who conducts such programs in Pune. I remember nagraj telling me that something of that sort is coming soon to Mumbai as well....

This is ankit here i have given my GRE twice and also my TOEFL & planning to give GMAT
Actually i got low scores in GRE and further i wish to continue my education in a B-school so did opt for GMAT
1]Why is it there is no name of BARRON'S here bcoz in my life i know how gr8 this book is.I gave my GRE from KAPLAN and all diffrnt short books and smart ways but they dint help me.Actually Barron's is known as Bagwat Gita bcoz it covers everything and after my GRE even i did realize it.
2]I think we need a guy who has been good in all books and has GIVEN his/her GMAT can tell us which shld we use for skills and which for solving stuff
3]So guys i have only 45 days to study for GMAT as i have studied 6 mnths for GRE frm where shld i start OG-KAPLAN-Manhattn

@ Shubhendu You have a good concern for forum actually belive me u can find more ppl on orkut ...there are huge grps & threads over there ...but u knw itz like things get too messy due to itz huge size and always a fight ..short & sweet is good as it fullfills our req ...lolz
I wont recommend to join any classes, because i have seen many people they just stuckup with class study material. much of their time is spent in solving it and forget doing or keep it on last ==OG,kaplan...... other books. rather u can join 1 2 1 tutor for any private tution on weekends.,for ur week subject.
this is just a suggestion.

Thanks Vikas for your suggestion. Sorry for the late reply . Just did not get an opportunity to log on. Given my current work scehdule :sad:, I might opt to for Weekend Tuitions on Verbal. Though for all of that I had need to at least Open the GMAT books and start studying 😛

IMHO, there is no better book for prep than OG. From the test takers themselves, the official answers give you an insight on what GMAT considers as right and wrong. Over a long time I have seen many aspirants fall into the trap of doing a "lot" of things - referring to materials from various sources. "Quality" and not "Quantity" is important. And for Quality, there's no better substitute than OG
Note: For SC, Manhattan SC Guide is vvery handy and in some ways a must to begin with.

we all have our own strategies here which is mostly similar for all.. couple of us have taken practice tests before starting the prep to knw where they stand and some have decided to skip the tests (one o them is me.. :)) books are mostly similar.. OG has to be done since its form the test takers themselves so OG complete, OG verbal, OG quant, Kaplan, Manhattan (SC and others) and princeton. As reachmonil rightly said many aspirants make the mistake of trying to refer many books. So you gotta decide which one you have to follow and how many u can follow till the G day u have decided..
Regarding selecting ur b schools is concerned, i havent done tht yet but since mostly all colleges have intake in Mar/Apr and the scores shld reach the colleges early, i have decided to give the GMAT in Aug so tht after tht i have enough time to decide my score suites which college.. hope tht helps.. u can ofcourse pm any of the puys here u wud like to.. 😃
