NEFT AND RTGS -A DETAILED GUIDE

Lets try to understand what is NEFT and RTGS and what is the difference between them. NEFT and RTGS are two main mechanisms to transfer money from one bank to another bank in India. Transferring money between two accounts in same bank is pretty straight forword and its a internal matter of the bank, it does not have to deal with other banks and their protocols, however when one bank wants to send the money to another bank in India, there is a defined mechanism it has to be done and hence NEFT and RTGS comes into picture. Both these systems are maintained by Reserve Bank of India. Lets understand both of these

NEFT - National Electronic Fund Transfer

NEFT full form is National Electronic Fund Transfer, and its a system of transfer between two banks on net settlement basis. Which means that each individual transfer from one account to another account is not settled or processed at that same moment, its done in batches . A lot of transactions are settled in one go in each batches. Presently, NEFT services are available from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm on weekdays (Mon - Fri) and from 8:00 am - 12:30 pm on Saturday.

Any NEFT Transfer done between 8 am - 5 pm generally gets settled on the same day, but if you deposit the money after 5 pm, then that will be settled the next working day. In case of Saturday, any money deposited between 8 am - 12 noon can be expected to reach the beneficiary account the same day.

NEFT Transfer Example

For example lets say Ajay has ICICI Bank account and Robert has a bank account in HDFC bank , Now Ajay deposits Rs 10,000 in Vijay account through NEFT transfer at 10:30 am . The money will be then taken out from Ajay's ICICI Account and will be sent to Vijay's HDFC bank the same day, then HDFC bank will credit Vijay's bank account. In case money can not be transferred to the target account (beneficiary account) , the money will be credited back to the source branch within 2 hours of the batch in which it was processed.

RTGS - Real Time Gross Settlement

RTGS full form is Real Time Gross Settlement and its a system of money transfer between two banks in real time basis, which means the moment one bank account transfer the money to another bank account, its settled at that time itself on real time basis between the banks, but the beneficiary bank has to make the final settlement to the bank account within two hours of getting the money. RTGS is the fastest possible money transfer between two banks in India through a secure channel.

Let me give an example, lets say Ajay has a SBI Bank account and Vijay has an Axis Bank account, Ajay transfers Rs 5 lacs to Vijay's account  through RTGS transfer, SBI bank instantly transfers Rs 5 lac to Axis Bank, now Axis bank has 2 more hours to deposit it in Vijay's account . Hence in worst case even with RTGS transfer there can be delay of 2 hours.

NEFT and RTGS Charges

NEFT and RTGS transfer charges depends on the Bank. RBI has guidelines for the maximum fees which can be charged, but it finally depends on the bank in question. Note that NEFT and RTGScharges, varies depending on the amount transferred and the timings when its done. While NEFT charges depends purely on the amount transfered, RTGS charges depends on the amount transferred as well as the timings of the day when its done . A RTGS transfer early will cost a little less charges. Note that, Service tax is also applicable to the charges. Below are the charges shows for NEFT and RTGS for retail banking (not for institutional banking)

Information required to make an RTGS & NEFT payment?

For making a payment through NEFT/RTGS, following information has to be furnished.

  • Amount to be remitted
  • Remitting customer's account number which is to be debited.
  • Name of the beneficiary bank.
  • Name of the beneficiary.
  • Account number of the beneficiary.
  • IFSC code of the destination bank branch

Note : MICR code is generally not required for NEFT or RTGS transfer

Points to Note

Non-Performing Asset
Loans and advances given by the banks to its customers are an Asset to the bank. Just for the sake of simplicity, we can understand that a loan (an asset for the bank) turns as NPA when the EMI, principal or interest component for the loan is not paid within 90 days from the due date. Thus a Bad Loan is an asset that ceases to generate any income for the bank.

As per RBI guidelines, NPA is defined as under:

Non performing asset (NPA) is a loan or an advance where;

i.  interest and/ or installment of principal remain overdue for a period of more than 90 days in respect of a term loan,
ii.  the account remains'out of order' in respect of an Overdraft/Cash Credit (OD/CC),
iii. the bill remains overdue for a period of more than 90 days in the case of bills purchased and discounted,
iv. the instalment of principal or interest there on remains overdue for two crop seasons for short duration crops,
v. the instalment of principal or interest there on remains overdue for one crop season for long duration crops,
vi. the amount of liquidity facility remains outstanding for more than 90 days, in respect of a securitization transaction undertaken in terms of guidelines on securitization dated February 1, 2006.
vii.  in respect of derivative transactions, the overdue receivables representing positive mark-tomarket value of a derivative contract, if these remain unpaid for a period of 90 days from the specified due date for payment.
Asset or Loan Classification Norms
The assets or loans are classified as:-
 Standard Assets
 Sub-standard Assets
 Doubtful Assets
 Loss Assets
Now, in order to ensure that banks are not affected due to defaults, RBI has directed the banks to make provisions or set aside money when an account turns bad. Banks should, classify an account as NPA only if the interest due and charged during any quarter is not serviced fully within 90 days from the end of the quarter.

Loss Asset is considered uncollectible and of such little value for the bank in retaining the account on its book and ideally, such loans should be written off. Thus, Loss assets should be written off. If loss assets are permitted to remain in the booksfor any reason, 100% of the outstanding should be provided for.

Apart from above, there are Guidelines by RBI for provisions under special circumstances.
 'Unsecured exposure' is defined as an exposure where the realizable value of the security, as assessed by the bank/approved valuers/RBI's inspecting officers, is not more than 10%, abinitio, of the outstanding exposure.
 'Exposure' includes all funded and non-funded exposures.
 'Security' are tangible security properly discharged to the bank and do not include intangible securities like guarantees, etc.
Restructuring of assets
i. 'Standard Assets' upon restructuring -> 'Sub-Standard Assets' .
ii. Thus, NPA upon restructuring slips into further lower asset classification categories as per
above table.
iii.  Also, an NPA upon restructuring can also be up-graded to the 'standard' category after observation of 'satisfactory performance' during the specified period i.e. on repayment of outstanding amount by the borrower.
Provisioning Coverage Ratio (PCR):
i. The ratio of provisioning to gross non-performing assets
ii. Indicates the extent of funds a bank has kept aside to cover loan losses.
iii.  Related News: PSBs' profits would have been wiped out were they asked to maintain 70% PCR

Net NPA = Gross NPA - (Balance in Interest Suspense account + DICGC/ECGC claims
received and held pending adjustment + Part payment received and kept in suspense account +Total provisions held).

(1) 2140

(2) 4230

(3) 560

(4) 290

(5) 1120

Answers:

Qs 1 (5)    Qs 2 (3)    Qs 3 (3)   Qs 4 (2)   Qs 5 (5)

Solutions:

1. 29, 37, 21, 43, 13, 53, 5

29 - 8 = 21,

21 - 8 = 13,

13 - 8 = 5

37 +8 = 45

45 + 8 = 53

So wrong number in the series is 43

2. 600, 125, 30, 13, 7.2, 6.44, 6.288

6.288 x 5 - (5x5) = 6.44

6.44 x 5 - (5x5) = 7.2

7.2 x 5 - (5x5) = 11

11 x 5 - (5x5) = 30

30 x 5 - (5x5) = 125

125 x 5 - (5x5) = 600

So wrong number in the series is 13

3. 80, 42, 24, 13.5, 8.75, 6.375, 5.1875

5.1875 x 2 - (2x2) = 6.375

6.375 x 2 - (2x2) = 8.75

8.75 x 2 - (2x2) = 13.5

13.5 x 2 - (2x2) = 23

24 x 2 - (2x2) = 42

42 x2 - (2x2) = 80

So wrong number in the series is 24.

4. 10, 8, 13, 15, 35, 135, 671, 4007

10 x1 - 2 = 8

8 x2 - 3 = 13

13 x3 - 4 = 35

35 x4 - 5 = 135

135 x 5 - 6 = 669

669 x 6 - 7 = 4007

So wrong number in the series is 671

5. 150, 290, 560, 1120, 2140, 4230, 8400

150 x2 - 10 = 290

290 x 2 - 20 = 560

560 x 2 - 30 = 1090

1090 x2 - 40 = 2140

So wrong number in the series is 1120.
