now i am scared!

Hi
Am in Wait List 5 ( SC Category), what r my chances to get in?
Plz reply soon, as m very scared.
Hello guyz! Congratulations, converters n 'in-the-line'ers!
Welcome all... to the IIFM family! Nice to see some activity here... n I guess u have quite a few doubts u want cleared (rite, Maverick? 😃 Neways, lemme help as much I can...
So they have mentioned specialization is on the basis of academic performance, huh? Well, well... see, ours is the first batch which will have the specializations... our seniors never had ne specializations. We have already 'discussed' a lot with the Insti regarding the manner of allocation of specializations. We want it to be interest-based; the Insti doesn't want ne field to lie vacant... Still, for us, as yet things are undecided. Only when we return from our internships will the process re-start for us. For you, they have already mentioned things clearly... let's see where it goes - both, for you and for us! As far as the course name goes, things are under way to re-name the course into PGDM-EM, FM or DM based on the specialization (major) one takes up. One also would have the option of doing a minor in ne other field, but that won't be reflected in the degree, only in the marksheet.
So that's that.
About the fees n stipend... we do get the stipend (arnd 1500 a mth). But I believe from ur batch this will stop. I don't know whether it's mentioned newhere in the prospectus, is it? N u say the fee amount includes the mess bills? I seriously doubt it. The mess is something the students manage themselves, and it stands apart from the Insti. Even we pay our mess bills separately.
Ne more doubts... excitements... do keep sharing... Talk, talk n talk!
All the very best!
Sid.
Hi Sid
What does the mess bill amount to approx on a monthly basis? also any suggestions regarding laptops
Hi
Am in Wait List 5 ( SC Category), what r my chances to get in?
Plz reply soon, as m very scared.
plz some body help me out
Our mess bills are generally arnd 1100-1200 rs p.m.
Abt the laptops, well... I'm not n expert in comps, but that shudn't be a problem... almost all of us bought it only after coming here, based on some research (we even had a laptop/desktop selection assignment in our of the courses, which proved to be really helpful!). Ppl have got laptops based on their requirements and spending capacity.
A very minimal specification could be: 2007 OS (it's cool...!), Vista, 40 GB hard-disk, 1 GB (atleast) RAM, and wi-fi 802.11 a/b/g enabled. The classrooms, library, computer centre n some part of the Nescafe lawns are wi-fi enabled, so make sure u have it... it's very useful (of course, i believe, ne laptop has wi-fi now...)
That's the best I can help with respect to specifications. Brands are completely ur call... Choose one which satisfies ur requirements within ur means!
N Jitendra, waiting 5, huh? Can't help u, man... have no idea hw the SC line moves. Neways, keep ur fingers crossed. The last date for confirmed students ws 25th, rite? So u shud know soon in a week's time max... All the best!
Hey Sid
thanks for ur patience with the queries, any other expense we should factor in, apart from the usual travel, personal expenses which one has to bear [ this is in light of the mess expenses which u mentioned is over and above the 1.5 lac course fee, which most of us assumed would be included] anything to be borne for books stationery etc? also any advise on bank loans? [preferred banker , terms etc]
stationery reqms r not much, coz most of the work's done on the laptops. U would require jus a few registers for some rough work in the class n self-practice. Reference books are available frm the library, so u woudn't need to invest there too, unless u want a personal copy 4 urslf.
Bank loans... nothin specific. Would b better if u get it done frm ur own place n come, so that u don't have to run arnd whn u come here. On the contraary, if there r mny in ur batch who come without bank loans, n then would like to avail of them, u could form a group or such, n approach Allahabad bank (that's the bank we have in IIFM) or ne other, to get better terms...
C u!
any prep one can start? for e.g. I have been working and would like to brush up on maths, so any suggested texts or practice material? also areas like accounting etc for folks from other backgrounds
also which laptop brand do u own and what is the brand loyalty like among ur batchmates? this will help us make an informed decision
Hmm... prep 4 maths n accounts b4 joining? I believe, for maths at least u jus need to revise ur CAT maths like derivatives, statistics in particular... As it is, u will have some prep maths sessions during orientation. For accounts, go to whatever source u have, n pick up ne book which says it's the "basics" or "fundamentals". Can't suggest u ne names, coz never needed them (I've a finance background), so never bothered to refer to ne books there. But b4 picking up a book, jus read a few lines of the first chapter... see how u feel of the language n style... if it's interestingly written and comprehensible, take it up. Doesn't matter if it's an Indian or foreign author...
Most of us here have an HP, Lenovo, Acer or Dell. The Dell ppl are really happy with their lot... I, though, have a Cubit Stylus (never heard of it, rite? No probs, even I hadn't!). But I believe a Dell proves best in customer satisfaction... in addition to the feeling of owning a customized product, the features too are cool and useful (I've personally liked them a lot).
thanks a lot sid !!! thats some info for sure!! 😃 and finally some convo happening on this thread.
where r u doing ur internships and looking forward how do u c d placement scenario in the forthcoming yr.
yeah me gotta DELL n seriously customisation is the best bit about it.
i did approach my local banks here but most of them advised me to get to Bhopal and contact banks der as they would be more informed about the insti and paper work could be lesser n process simpler/faster.
did contact another senior from IIFM too passed out now and he told me mess bills aint included which i confirmed from the college. :-$
now about the stipend thing u gimme a shock!! website has it though that such assistance would be available.. but nothing in d letters or stuff.
wanted 2 ask u 1 more thing, is internet available in the hostel rooms?? thru LAN or Wi Fi?
uve just finished with ur 1st yr, how hectic was the entire schedule??
hi

Hi maverick,
can u plz share the configuration on your laptop, helpful for would be buyers like me...also guys can we share when each of us are reaching the insti?
thanks a lot sid !!! thats some info for sure!! 😃 and finally some convo happening on this thread.

Quark (may I know ur real name, plz?), laptops are definitely not compusory... we have a 24*7 compu lab, so at least in the Insti there would be no major problem without a laptop/desktop. But it's only more convenient to have one... u don't have to keep going to the lab for ur small works, etc. Esp. during fieldwork, laptops prove really useful. Still, if u have ur doubts abt them, come to the Insti n get a feel abt the way things work. If u eventually find it necessary, get a laptop/desktop. In fact, most of us got one only after coming here, n gauging things for ourselves! Maverick (may I know ur name, too???), we do have LAN in the hostel rooms, so no worry on that end.
Schedules in IIFM are as hectic as you want them to be! The more u involve urself with IIFM activities, the lesser 'lazy' times you would have 4 urself. We have ppl who don't bother with 'superfluous' activities, n get str8 8-10 hrs sleep daily (O... hw we envy them!). N we have others, who don't bother with 'superfluous' activities, but still hardly sleep coz they utilize the time 'enjoyin'! Newhich way, it's up to you to distribute ur time, n u can do nething with it... N there's a hell lotta things u can do, believe me... and that includes learning - not merely studying - learning.
Yes, get a loan as per ur convenience. My mom's with a bank... so comparatively less hassles 4 me. U too do some mkt research n choose the best option. If it's there in Bhopal, so be it. Abt the stipend, do not hope much. If it's not there in the brochure, u will almost definitely not get it. We ourselves had a hard time gettin it - got it thru sheer will n hard work, by drawing attention to some loopholes. But they are determined not to give it from ur batch. Still, see if there are some loopholes... n once u get here, u can always work to enforce ur 'right'!
I'm interning with TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute) on a project relating GHG mitigation & buildings. Abt where I see the placements headed this year? See, things have been quite different this year with our internships. We, as a new batch (for the new scheme of IIFM), have realized quite a few things - some good, others not so good. Changes have occurred in the way internships have turned out - again, some good, others not so good. We intend to carry our experiences forward n use them to ensure smoother sailing for forthcoming batches (n also our own placements!). One thing's for certain, placements this year can turn up a few surprises, for sure. M I being vague? Maybe... but revealing too many 'good's and 'bad's through this medium is not necessary.
(Don't worry, newayz... u will get ur job!)
Hi Sid,
I'm Supratik, quark in pg for lack of a better pseudonym...
thanks for ur detailed reply, have a q re attire, can we attend classes in casual or is it formals all the way?
also what are the opportunities for people interested in sports and debates and other literary pursuits?
finally, ur thoughts re internships abv are a little vague, but thats probably coz we havent been specific with our questions. so if one were to ask for a student who may be interested in fashioning a career in one of the following areas viz 1. development sector 2.corporate 3.environment 4. forestry how has the SI scenario panned out for 2008? as u say that things have been quite different are we to assume that options have blossomed in some areas while not so bright in others? also with the division of the prog in three distinct areas viz devp, env and forestry mgmt, will the placement scenario be more focussed in the insti's core mandate areas than yesteryears, when placements have been quite diversified?
although it may be a littl premature to delve into SI and placemnts related discussions for the 2010 batch, I'm sure a little advance info will help us to do our homework better.
feels great now as discussions are moving!!! hi supratik and sid! i am indranil, so me the maverickindro.. i ws asked a few questions in the interview as well on dis name. :)
@quark
will share my config to you! PM me ur email address. i just booked it some 10 days back and its an okie dokie config as i wanted to have some IBM apps for java on it too. :)
can u share your background with all of us here. have booked my tickets from kolkata for bhopal. only 2 trains and both on monday!
1 is shipra exp
2 is bhopal exp --- when i booked there were tickets in only this train. :)
@sid
thanks mate for sharing such invaluable stuff. but certainly if u can highlight those "good" and "not so good" stuff it will be much better so that we can come better mentally prepared at least and work to shape our paths.
merely getting a job wasnt the criteria for choosing this insti for me and chuckin the rest. 😃 wanted to work in the sectors which the coll deals in. 😃
@quark
me a big time sports freak too man!! although am saddened by the fact that coll has no BB court. :(
and i wanna actively start writing and posting stuff for some IIFM mags or the web!
when r u starting?
@Sid,
give us some geographic and demographic details boss!! scorching summers now i guess in Bhopal. how long is it like that? during gd/pi it was very pleasant though.. and can u tell us what are all the activities one can involve themselves in college! and are regular trips and hikes or such kinda programmes conducted by the college or the student grp?
