Also I am a bit confused about this moderator wala thing for 3 mins in GD.... guys please elaborate how to go about it or what is that exactly.....
Regards

Guys,
I had my essay/GD/PI session yesterday in Bangalore - Nice meeting you guys Bakwas, MrAnderson and controlfreak and the other silent member of PG - sorry didnt note down your IDs - however this goes out to Rahul , Nipun, Gaurav, Aravind, Jitendra, Vimal, Shantanu, Mouli, and the others whose name I just forgot to ask - talking and fooling around with you guys, was a great stress buster!!
Some general gyan -
No amount of preparation as such is gonna help you, because they are gonna ask you on anything and everything.
I was in the same panel as controlfreak and Mr Anderson.
The panel was very knowledgeable and experienced.
I somehow have a feeling, that it would be a great learning experience, with them as professors.
I was asked on a wide range of topics - quizzed me on everything starting from cobol, love marraige/arainged marriage, ias,my mom, why mba, my eight semester project, my workex, ethical dilemma, gk, current affairs, future expectations from jobs, stream of specialization, extra cocurriculars, rating of instis etcetcetcetc
BTW, I was the fifth interviewee for my panel - and the first question I was asked was -
So, what is the general feedback you have been receiving about the interviews -
I smiled at them ( sweetly, I hope) and said - "It has been a pleasant experience. Everybody is very happy!!"
All three panelists looked at me and shook their head understandingly!!
And, I had this feeling in my stomach - " Now to, my time has come!! I said a silent prayer, and prepared nyself to get slaughtered!!"
18 hours, The Aviator,a good session of apreceating the beauties of God's Creation, a heavy dinner, and a good round of sleep - later -
I have a feeling - tht they actually induced an anaesthetic in me before the session began, because although there is a gnawing feeling in me, that I may have been royally screwed, I am unable actually, to place the xact moment!!
Point is everybody came out happy and grinning - and I still dont know where I stand.
So, expect the unexpected.
Good Luck to the rest of the gang for their GD/PI sessions.
And the Best fo Luck to all of us, - hoping that we find our names in the Holy List!!
Its Target XLRI now!!!
Naah - not today - from tomorrow - today, I just wanna fool around!!!
Sanchayan.
Hi Folks
Just coming back after iift gd/pi session.
Date: 22-Feb-2005
Venue: Hyderabad
At sharp 9:30 am we started with the essay...topic - 'Effect of Technology in Media Progression'......(aside: i am impressed- this is the only B-school that I saw, or heard, that stuck exactly to the time they had mentioned in the call letter).
After essay (we were given full 20 mins), GD follows...the Profs (Prof Ravi and a lady Prof) are really nice and give out instructions as well as the rationale for each exercise..........
Topic- Borderless World - Dream or Reality
First everyone gives intro.......my mistake was that i had read in PG that at this stage they expect only ur views on the topic and not the exact points...so i didn't elaborate too much....though all others spoke a lot.....
Then the GD started....everyone being given a chance to be the chairperson.....(13 people in the group)
well it was total chaos...i am normally a good spaeker but here i cudn't even enter the GD for the first 15 mins b'coz of utter mayhem....people are simply fighting for air-time...some are good speakers and others are not but all grab the air-time and then keep ranting...even when whatever they wanted to say has been conveyed..ppl just keep going and when another person wants to interrupt....well alomst all guys had the standard ' let me complete' , 'let me make my point'.......what the heck guys, it's a GD - let others speak as well.....
i was finally able to come in the GD a few times (maybe only 2)...initially after first 10 mins the Prof even interrupted the gd to say that why is the public getting impatient.....but no result of that
mostly the chairperson was either not heard or he tried to grab the air time....
what the hell man...utter chaos......when i was the chairperson i tried to give ppl who were not speaking some chance and didn't grab the air-time (believe me ).........
anyways, i am really disappointed....GD was a big failure on my part.....they just didn't get to see me in the GD, and a part of the problem lay with me as well.....i cudn't shout as much as the others....
after GD interviews begin...20 mins approx for each guy.....
outside while waiting for interview turn, ppl started discussing the GD and i was aghast when a guy (who had snatched maximum air-time due to good verbal skills lke ' let me complete my point' etc) started complaining that he didn't get enough time to say this and that (man he started the discussion as well as concluded it and kept coming back after every 2 mins....my guess- of approx 45 imins discussion he must have spoken for 15 mins ) come'on buddy- what did u want- the full 45 mins for ur extempore ???:huh::huh:
anyways, i told him my view- that i don't think he cud have got any more time.....
(a disclaimer- i am very very disappointed with my GD performance and so might sound a bit harsh ...also i do understand that people sometimes become over-aggressive just b'coz it's very imp for them....)...so plz no offenses meant....
interviews were cool for everybody- everyone came out smiling...
as for me: nothing much was asked....just the usual stuff...why shift etc...
i feel maybe my interview was very short but don't have anyone to confirm.....i generally don't get an idea of the interview time :), when i give one :)
so that's it folks....
my advice to ppl: if u r going for iift, just be prepared to fight and shout a lot in the GD but do it wisely- in fact be calm for the initial few mins (maybe if the group is making a lot of noise then let the prof come and reprimend the group once) and then start off...shout the others out...grab airtime..b'coz that's the only way to make urself heard...and yes, practice saying....'plz let me complete' even when u have spoken for 2-4 mins at length.......in short just don't give ur air-time to anyone else......
how i wish i had attend the time gd sessions to hone my shouting skills 😉
Thank you for ur post..and as for u not able to shout in the gd..I feel its quite alright... sometimes the quiet person in a chaotic gd comes out the winner..so dont get frustrated..:)
All the best

Hi chaps
My gd was on 22nd at hyderabad . i think one of my fellow members in the group gave a detailed description of what happened in the gd. there was a gd where there was a flower wase on the table.the person having wase in front of him was the moderator.
the gd was a chaos . one person talks abt eco boundaries and other suddenly tells it is not imp but the physical is imp. like that there were huge digressions from the topic.the moderator had to interrupt twice, due to digression from the topic.
i had a cool interview . i was the first person after the lunch.
there were q on my acads, why i wanted to start a consultancy eventhough
the prices of hardware r crashing...........:grab:
then i had q on famous theatres in hyd and filmi stuff
cool interview.....
BE PREPARED TO FACE A GD OF 1/2 HR IN TOTAL............
ALL THE BEST

Guys,
from my exp. at iift GD
it really doesn't matter how much u speak
what they really looking for is u body lang.( imp. listening skills)
what u speak (content, clarity, logical analysis)
this is the reason why they give ample amount of time
and REMEM they'll ask eveybody speak
all the best for the remaining
Hi all
Venue:Coffe Board, B'loreDate: 23 Feb 2004
I was the last person to reach CBoard on time(coz a guy came at 9:40 , thats the last guy to come).I reached at 9:20 and headed to the Board Room(old experience), saw there 2 gentlemen(the mods for GD PI).
I was asked to go to another room, and he took me there. I saw the rest of the gang , all eagerly waiting. Mood there , before the process: really cool.9:30 sharp: Essay: Topic comes in a sealed envelope(remember Oscar nite?).
Topic: Education and Suceess- Is there a correlation.Time limit 20 minutes, 300 words max.Scribbled for 20 minutes.
Advantages or Disadvantages for me: First from the mod's left. So I had to start the GD. GD they told us how to go thru, each one to speak for 2 mins, then open discussion.GD right after Essay. 5 minutes to think.
Topic: What after Gen X.
I started off my 5 paisa worth with what basically is Genx(after baby boomers) . We are Gen Y as per the media. All spoke for 2 mins each. Then very decent GD. No Fish market. Excellent crowd. Seeing a crowd so disciplined, who would let others speak. Bagged enough airtime, all of us... Content wise, well... staryed a bit.
Still okay...Two guys who dint speak much during the open discussion, asked to summarize. Good crowd. People were accomodative, they stopped when others spoke. 5 stars for the Group.
Then break... Coffee, Biscuit....One of the 2 gentlemen who were earlier for the GD, I mean the mods... came an asked me to get ready for the PI.
Again me first. He said , finish drinking tea, and he will be back. He was back after a couple of mins.
4 panelists: One in 40's , One say 50's,(these were the people for GD) and one lean genteleman and a cool gentelman(prolly say 60s)..Qs from all panelists. One at a time.
Why CBSE?
Dad keeps get transferring?
I said same school from 1-12 th dad's choice.
Why RECW?
Then what did u do immediately after passing out(2002)Partime teacher at Visu consultants...They get visas right, I said they are into GRE coaching as well.
Did you take GRE? NoSo no GRE and still teaching?
Why acads low in Engg?
I said first year was okay(61), then started coming down, extra curri etc...Oh, he asked... they count even the firtst year marks...
I said Improvement funda in RECW exams is tuff ,as u have to cancel the whole mark sheet....
Fav subject in Engg?
Then IPR(I had done the DL101 course on IPR from WIPO, GEneva, course is online) They thought I went to Geneva.
Did this cource affect ur studies in RECW?
Why did u take up that course?
I said first out of interst them more interst so doing a PGD in IPR from IGNOU.....
If you were offered a course on how to make babies, would you take it????
Did the IPR course(Genave) affect ur studies?
Current Job... ???
What is WTO, functions?
What is this multilateral?
Asked to list trade blocks, members?
WTO Min Conferences... when are they held?
Even told that 2005 in HK.Then asked what is India's agenda in Hong Kong(2005)Then Trade Barriers, Tarriff, Non Tariff what are they..
Then to Patent Amendment(3 rd oridnance), explained.. Pharma, whats gonna happen...?
Is that good or bad???
For the why IIFT q, I had written, Trade becoming Multilateral, he asked? is it not Multi Lateral now??
I had mentioned that this is my second time at IIFT GDPI. and that I am better prepared.
Finally the shocking revelation came...."Nikhil, I will give you a personal tip, u seem to good in IPR, so try to do a course on Law and become an IPR Lawyer, u will earn lots... , ask him, ur dad is Head of Technology Tranfer in ISRO, so even he will be able to help u out in getting into a Law course"(pointed at his neighbour), that gut nodded...
Belgium is offering free courses on Law, only need to pay for accomodation...go there ... all the best!!!
Shook hands with 2 of them, they were the guys who offered me hand... Thanked and left...
So me now searching for Law courses in Belgium..It is sayonara IIFT!

two profs from iift for the essay and gd: a gentleman and a lady
for interview there were 5 people on the panel, the earlier 2 and 3 new faces. dont think the 3 are from iift.
group of 12, one didnt turn up so we were 11 (3 girls, 8 guys). essay topic was same as in bangalore today: "education and success: is there a correlation?"
gd topic: "should sports stars be brand ambassadors?"
every person got to speak for 1-1.5 minutes. those who kept on talking where cut short by the profs. after this it was free for all, same procedure of candidates playing moderators with a flower vase being passed around.
we discussed about ethics, consumerism, surrogate advertising of liquor etc by sports stars, effect of ads on player's games, if there is need for a body to regulate the kind of ads these people work on, sachin's bank balance, players' social responsibilty etc etc
overall quite okay. no chaos.
offered tea/coffee/biscuits. interviews started at 11 am. i was number 5.
questions:
1) you are a b.com marketing grad, okay market yourself to us, but please dont use cliches like hard working etc? i think i did an okay job.
2) products of sanghi industries (my sir name happens to be sanghi!)
3) what is consumer's surplus? explain with example
one of the panelists started talking about diminishing marginal utility, he said liquor doesnt follow DMU law, the more liquor you have the more you want of it. i said you have 2 shots and you will loose all decision making capacity, so will no longer be in position to decide what you want. this guy got slightly mad at me the male prof from iift was laughing.
4) what is the diff between wages and labor?
5) tell us about working capital management? what is included in working capital?
6) you have sinusitis, how will you survive in delhi?
cant remember other q's at the moment. was disappointed at not being asked anything on forex, bop, fdi, bpo etc.
those before me were asked very few acad based q's.
all the best to those who havent faced the music yet! by the way when are the results expected?
Hi guys,
I had my IIFT GD/PI yeterday (22nd Feb) at Coffee Board, Bangalore @ 9.30 AM.
Round One :: Essay
Topic : "Role of technology in media progression"
Time allowed : 20 minutes
Expected length : 300 words. (They give you an A4 sized paper with rules on bothe the sides, and you are asked to write about 300 words.)
I feel I managed the essay part quite well. Kept my write-up to the point, and included all the possible points, citing examples of all sorts of technology that can be involved.
Personal grade : 8 or 9/10
Round Two :: GD
Topic : "Borderless world - A dream or a reality"
Number of candidates : 12
Initially, each one of us was asked to speak for about two minutes on what (s)he personally felt about the topic. I, being the last to speak, had enough time to think and got some points from earlier speakers too. So, I think I spoke quite well and to the point. But, somehow I dragged it for more than 2 minutes and the moderator had to intervene . Anyways, I feel I did pretty well here too, and I'll give myself 8/10.
After the topic was advanced to the group, we had lots and lots of good points pouring in from all sides. I too spoke about 3-4 times in the 15 or 20 minute GD, but I feel my awkward position had its own disadvantages which made it quite difficult for me to get the attention of other folks and make my points heard . I won't in fact give more than 5/10 to my GD performance.
Round Three :: PI
The interview started at 11.15 AM sharp. Out of the 12 candidates, first 7 were given exactly 30 minutes each whereas they gave only 15 minutes each for the remaining 5 (myself being the last guy to be inerviewed :x. Excluding myself, everyone else in my group had some work-ex, and all of us belonged to the same field - Software Engg. The group had ppl from all sorts of companies like Infy, IBM, Motorola and Philips. There was another guy among us who had been teaching in TIME for the past two years. The questions ranged from all fields viz. acads, economics, india's foreign trade, global issues, india's problems, etc etc. Going against the common myth of freshers being grilled mainly on acads, there was no particular trend this time. Even though I'm a fresher, I was asked zilch on my acads .
There were four ppl in the panel. The rightmost person didn't ask anything. I guess he was there only to watch your body language, code of conduct, etc. The questions I was asked (the order may not be the same)::
- You are so young. We mainly get ppl who have had some work-ex. Why don't you go for a job and then come to us??
- What gives you an edge over the ppl who have had work-ex?? Why do you think we should take you against a person who's had substantial amount of work-ex??
- List three qualities that a good manager must possess.
- How did you get to know about IIFT??
- What offers do you have through the campus-placements at your instt. (I'm from IIITA)
- The offers you have will clearly give you great growth opportunites as well as a challenging work-env. Why do you want to do an MBA then??
- You seem to be very hard-workinng and studious, what else do you do besides studying?
- What other calls do you have?? (I have IIM CKL)
- What shall be your priority list for these colleges??
- You have written about Anne Frank's Diary in your CV form. What was in the book that influenced you the most and why??
- Do you read Economic Times regularly??
- What are the major exports from India??
- Which nations are our major foreign trade partners??
- What attracts your interest towards business??
- What is the current trend in the value of Indian Rupee??
I feel I answered all questions very well. But I didn't know the answer of the last question and I had to say "I don't know" . I don't know how the hell I forgot to take a look at such a basic thing, and that too for the PI of IIFT . I was surprised they asked me zilch on acads. That was something I was best prepared for . Personally' I'll give 7/10 to myself for my PI.
On the luckier side, I feel that they somehow got the impression that I am a guy who is very hard-working and dedicated. They also seemed to be happy after my PI. But, I don't why I feel I gave them an impression of being a dumbo when it comes to economics basics. Anyways, let's hope something good comes out of all this.
That's all from my side. All the best for those who are yet to have their GD/PIs.
regards
Shashi
Well, I'd mine today. WTC, Mumbai.
Wasn't well in the morning. Puked in Mumbai's local train.
Asked IIFT guys to postpone my GD/PI, and whisper started among them that I would know essay topic in advance.
One of them says, we are very democratic blah blah...I leave this upto you, either today or Friday. And I made 2 second decision to go ahead.
Essay "Education and success - Is there any correlation?"
Wrote, and wrote well.
GD: What after Generation-X?
We all spoke for a minute, and then it was left open. The group was decent, no fish market, points well made. I was about to start when penalist told us to stop.
At start it was told that GD would last 1 hour, and we were stopped after 35 minutes.
The penalist was confused as to what he had to say. Pointed me, and I made my point.
Thought I would get a chance to presant summary, but no chance.
I was 1st to be interviewed on the request that I'd to leave early as I wasn't well.
PI: 4 penalists P1, P2, P3, P4. P2 is woman, rest men.
Me: Good morning...
P3: Introduce yourself
Me: blah blah...
P3: Going through your CV, I see that your acads are unparallel, but there are cyclic fluctuations. How will you perform at IIFT?
Me: If fluctuations are any indicator, I will do very well in IIFT as my last student fling wasn't that well.
P2: Feels proud.
P1: You are a software guy. (He talks about ERP, and asks me the impementation)
Me: Sorry sir, never worked on ERPs.
P1: If you have to implement Oracle, on which platform Windows, or Unix.
Me: Linux/Unix, as it's developers paradise, and Windows have security problems.
P1: You played nationals in Chess. (Asks me a technical term in chess).
Me: Answers
P2: Again feels proud.
P1: Your Dad is an economist, do you know macro-economics?
Me: A bit of it
P1: What is BoP
Me: Answers
P1: Indian exports/imports figures
Me: Answers
P1: Software exports
Me: Answers
P1: After 5 years, software exports?
Me: Say 20 times of current. (Big mistake, calculations went for a toss).
P4: Why foreign trade, and not other B-school?
Me: I answered this very badly. All 4 penalists were staring at me.
It went to and fro on why foreign trade for software consultant's post, and I didn't answer properly.
P4: Problems facing Indian software industry?
Me: Infrastructure
P4: But that is general, specific?
Me: We have to move from service providers to SDLC process of providing solutions.
P1: Asks a long technical question.
Me: Sorry!
P1: Looks at P2 who didn't ask anything. P2 says no questions?
P1: Thank you, don't worry you will get well soon.
Moral: Over to XLRI on Sunday, and saved from the dilemma of choosing IIFT or taking CAT/GMAT later this year. IIFT - Over and out.
Tell me one thing is the GD and PI panel the same or different ??
normally the two Profs from GD group get together with 3 more guys to form the 5 member interview panel....and the panel is really nice...real gentlemen there 😃
hey! i had my gd/pi 2day in hyd..shraddhas group...it was a good GD..and very disciplined crowd..there was a lil cross-talk but it got sorted out in a few secs.
The interview was very very general: i was slightly disappointed coz..all da economics i mugged up was of no use at all..a lot of ques frm CV...and mine was da shortest interview of all ..10 mins only..now does tht imply any decision taken in advance? ...i hope not.
i came in around 7-8 times in the GD ,and essay went well and so did the first few mins intro..though i was one of the persons who didnt stop after 1.5 mins ..or 2 mins..(i think) and he cut me and said "thank u"...will tht carry negative mrks?... i hope not..
and my interview....
1. pronounced my whole name twice
me: (smiled)..yes sir
2. so,shravani inroduce urself
me: blah blah blah
( one of the gentlemen was frm hyd and knew abt my college..so he asked)
3.so u had campus placements rgt?
did u get thru? which comapny?
me: yes..(told them da company)
4: thta a gud one ...why do u want 2 to MBA
5.wats ur pay packet ?
6. diff between a manager and a entrepreneur?
me: entrepreneur has an organisation of his own ..greater decision making power ..(i think he wanted more)
7. r leadership qualities imp 4 a manager?
me: yes sir
8. and vice versa?
9 , 10, 11, tech ques frm compsci
wat is ur fav subject ? me: Operating Systems
wat is thrashing:round-robin algo.....garbage collection..
(i answerd the last 2 well...first one mumbled sumthing)
11' wat do u do in free time
12 hobbies?
13 how has the book "TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD" influenced u?
me: i told them abt how sometimes we choose 2 take the easier way out by compromising..but thts not real victory..etc etc..strength of character etc etc
14 do u think principles r imp?
15 can u live without never ever compromising on them?
me: yes sir,it is upto the individual to keep them up...
16.sure?
17 suure?(was looking if i maintain eye contact and say it forthrightly..i guess)
18 wat do u watch on TV?
19 ok...u may leave now...
tht was it..i have no idea wat 2 make of it...just keeping my fingers crossed ..hoping....
i know its a bit late to ask this question but can anyone plz tell me where can i get the figures pertaining to india's exports in different sectors.
