Hi, I had my IIFT interview today.. A bit about me:
Final Yr, Electronics & Comm Engineer, Jamia Millia Islamia,
Calls: IIM - C(PGDM & PGDCM), XLRI(BM), MDI (PGPM), NITIE, IIFT, IMT and MICA
So here it goes..
Date: 11th Feb, 2005
Time: 9.30 AM
Venue: IIFT, Delhi
The topic today for the essay was "Which important important historical event would you like to present at and Why?" We were given 20 minutes to write the essay not exceeding 300 words.
The GD process was the same as discussed earlier, 1 minute to everyone to give their views followed by open discusion in which each person was the chairperson. The role of the chairperson was to give direction to GD and try and make sure that the group maintains decorum. The topic "IT in rural development is more a hype than reality". Overall the group performed well. Most of the chairpersons ensured that the group did not digress and the whole topic moved forward. It threatened to turn in a fish market at a couple of occasions but was brought under control usually by the chair. I entered the GD 4-5 times.. overall it lasted for about 50 minutes. No one was asked to summerize in the end.
Next the interview. 4 panelists. None of them looked at my certificates. Each has the photocopy of the CV form so I suggest every1 to carefully go through that. The following questions were asked:
Q. Why are you changing ur field from E&C; to international business? Isn't it a waste of ur 4 years?
Q. What do you think is the course structure here at IIFT?
Q. What is e-commerce?
Q. A lot of ethics. Would you bribe to do business? Why do you think hackers make viruses and sabotage websites? Do you think its justified?
Q. Asked me about my strengths.
Q. About the books I had read (mentioned Da vinci Code) and the controversy around it.
Q. What is nanotechnology? Where is it used?
Q. Have you seen the IIFT website? What would you like to change or add to the IIFT website to make it better?
Thats it. Lasted for about 15 mins, though I can't be sure of that. Result is expected around 20th march so best of luck to all.

essay started at 9:40 same topic for essay and gd as amit goyal.apparently all the groups had the same topics.however our group didn't have the moderator system.
gd:13 members in group 2panelists(1 gent 1 lady) moi only girl(advantage me):)
everyone had 1-1 1/2 mins to speak then gd thrown open.ok gd spoke2-3 timesbut panel had to intervene twice and very angrily.there were 4-5 ppl who were very aggressive and wudn't let anyone else speak kept on sayin let us complete over and over again.
2nd time panel intervened lady was very angrysaid marks if u not gud listener.wen 5 mins left for gd to end 2 of our group members who weren't able to speak in gd given chance to speak.

advice to all ppl who have interviews left chill don't worry abt gd EVERYBODY gets a chance to speak.

asked iift ppl delhis last centre for interviews so iift interviews officially end on the 13th and result will be out any time after 25th.

the process has already been detailed so wont go into it.
starting with the write up the topic was: if you could wake up tommorrow morning as someone else whom would you choose and why??
thought a lot abt whom to choose and settled for michael schumacher wrote what ever the page limit culd permit me to write...
coming on to the gd ...11 ppl in the grp...gd wasnt regulated as has been the case in most gd's @iift this year...we were given 2 mins to speak on the topic intially and then it was free for all
and the topic was...hold ur breath

do i need to even say what happened in the gd ...pathetic is how i would rate my performance in the gd. period.
now coming to the best part the interview...was a long wait as our panel seemed to be taking on a average 15-20 mins on each candidate...i was 6th in line ..so had to wait a good hour or so.

Had my IIFT intw yesterday so dont know how my post will help(except for future aspirants)....
One coommon factor for me in most of my intws : One guy in panel who has worked in my company at some point in his life......( iworked for a big auto manf, firm....)
GD panel: two south indian looking guys.....
intw panel: One surdarjee, a lady , one more man and then finally my ex company man...
Write up: " what u wanna b when u wake up tomorrow morning...and why?
The "B Creative" instinct aroused and i decided to write " i wanted to be happy" .....later thought abt it and changed it!!! wrote abt ganndhi(safe)
GD: I think this was one of the most regulated GDs i have participated in....topic: Mobile fone boon-bane..... i wud rate my performance as good.....after the two min. intro we were supposed to chair the grp. for 3 min.( 2 for discusion....1 to conclude)in CCW dirn. .....simple topic and discussed all the parameters...the panel did step in to remind the duty of chairman as a moderator....i did a good job there......

shamefully cudnt answer some to their satisfaction(eg most costly component in my car)...told them something then realized it later it wasnt so....neways....
most of it was on my job profile(vendor devt.)....asked abt what all cost initiatives i took,,,,plus my interaction with foreigners.....plus some of the company initiatives.....
then the sardarjee asked something abt my reading the pink paper......Pink what??
well the eco times .was asked whether i had gone thru it today??..told them yes i read it.... but not today......looked disappointed...then told i saw the h/ls "lnm mittal is 3rd richest man $25 billion...was v happy and said thats what i wanted to know(told the panel abt he being LNM Mittal's father's banker.....impressive) Then was asked abt the book"Machine that changed the world" said a lot abt lean mfg....etc....then asked thw calls i have and which 1 i will choose....said IIFT...why? told them.....then asked a qs. which gave an indication that they thought i was still working.....told them my current status: NOT WORKING...asked abt the 1 lakh car( iwas working with TATAs)...told them my views.....then the last qs. from electronics to vendor devt to IIFT please explain......gave a satisfactory reply......in the answer i mentioned the word my car...sardarjee was v happy....." wow even after leaving the company u still call it my car...i m impressed....its the way they groom u....blah blah...." then pointed to a Tata Admn serviceofficer(very coveted post ) as to what he thought....he nodded.....i sweated.....
neways as i said before i cud have screwed it somewhere which i still have not realized coz i didnt meet ne one in delhi who came out sad......
results will tell...all the best....

Hello, even though araav answered it but ain't satisfied with the answer ( how can any other insti be better than mine?????????????????///)
well first of all you need to look on where you wish to go
Intl business: thats coming up in INDIA in a big way THX to WTO : so close down your eyes and pick up IIFT
OPS: the pride of being the best in OPS fn., No doubts about it
other usual stuff: MDI
MDI hasnt created a niche for itself the way IIFt and NITIE have done for themselves
and plain fact is if you are in domestic business you will be ranked AFTER IIMA where as in itl bz/ OPS there is +ve diffrential for IIFTians/ NITIE ppl.
In the end its your call where you wish to go and whether you are ready to put all ur eggs in one basket ( being a FN specialist) or aren't able to decide where exactly you wish to move......

I Beg to differ:
According to me IIFT = NITIE > MDI
Bear in mind that MDI is a private institute and as is the problem with all private colleges, you cannot be sure that they would continue having the same ranking even after say 5 years... Lets compare the fees; fees at MDI is nearly 2 times the fees at either IIFT and NITIE... Also between IIFT and NITIE, well, they are pretty much the same in quality: excellent infrastructure, faculty....similar batch strength and fees.
One advice: Dont go by the rankings....people have created a HAVVA (Hype ) about MDI... its not that gr8....Moreover IIFT being a govt inst. can be expected to be far more ethical and truthful with their placement results (7.5 Lakh average)...No one knows for sure whats goin on inside MDI..
MDI > IIFT > NITIE

The wait is killing....vaise they were very prompt in bringing out the GD/PI calls... so lets hope the tradition continues.
Personally, I'm very eager to go home.....if I get through, I'll be able to afford a long leave from work..
