I have done my electrical engineering from IIT Roorkee (CGPA 8.1)
10th -92% and 12th 84%
My IIM Indore interview on 20th Feb is as follows:
there were three professors say P1, P2, P3. I was their prey so I will call my self Victim V.:-)
P1 seemed a nice guy. P2 was bald and looking into my eyes at all times. P3 looked very serious.
V : Good Morning!
P2 : U havent filled up the no of months of work ex in the form. ( puts the form in front of me).
V: sorry. fills it up with the pen they give me...( one hell of a start 😞 )
P2 : (takes back the form and looks into it)
P1 : Can u show me ur certificates?
V : ya sure ( gives him the file )
P2 : What is FDI?
V : I tell him.
P2 : Why is currently important?
V: tell him a little bit abt the UPA govt policies and hw it is encouraging FDI which is giving more money to industries. (didnt really explain well)
P2 : What is SEBI?
V: tell him the full form..
P2 : (immediately asks the next question) Can FDI be done an IT company?
V: Says yes. It can be done. Currently IT industry is not under the government though it is regulated by the government. FDI can be made. Gave an example of July Systems which received FDI. (wasnt really sure initially but later i came strongly and said it is allowed).. ( however initially i had some doubts )
P2 : U work in a private company? ( i say yes) how is a private company different from a public company?
V: tell him abt being listed in the exchange and stuff..( this was easy)
P2: what is "limited" in Pvt Limited company.
V : I am not sure about that. Maybe it deals with ownership of the board of directors but not sure. ( shud have skipped it:-( )
P1: ur company is private limited..u shud know this..
V: Yes, I should know this. I will find out. ( smile)
P2: What is an IPO?
V: tell him in detail..cited the example of TCS in the process.
P2: any news on the IPO front?
V: I mention the jet airways IPO
P2: Any IPOs in future?
V: mention Hutch and UTV
P1: U have got good grades in Economics and Management courses in college. Good
V: I smile and say thanks
P1: can u name any books u studied?
V: I fumble and say no. I dont remember. I studied from my notes. I am missing the name of the book. ( wasnt really sorry )
P1 : Then IIT Roorkee is just like any other college.
V: No, Our professor is this subject was good and it was better to study from the notes. From the books we get the entire details which might not be required.
P1: So do u think the education system is not good?
V: I say no. It depends on the students as to how much they can learn from the institute and put that to use.
P2: do u remember any other course books in other subjects? like Digital Electronics ( smiles and says that u have got A in both the courses ( mgmt and economics...in digital elec it was much worse )
V: I say yes. In digital we had Morris Mano.
P2: analog electronics?
V: We had some books like Millman and halkias.
P1 : ok name some publishing houses in india and abroad.
V: In india we have tata mcgraw hill and Mcgraw hill abroad. We also have harper collins and double day abroad for publishing novels.
P1 and P2 : P3 U can now ask..
P3 : U are an electrical engineer. Tell us the difference in Electrical engineering and Electronics ?
V : The difference lies in teh fact that elec engg deals with large values of current and voltage about 220 V etc while electronics deals with low values of current and voltage
say 5V.. ..
P3 : (immediately next question ) so is there is a fine demarcation between both..say some voltage level?
V: no there is no demarcation like that. Many electrical equipments use electronic materials.
P3 : What is an UPS. is it electrical or Electronic?
V : it is electrical. It might use Electronic equipment inside. I am not sure... It is a inverter as well as a volatge regulator.
P3: what is the unit of power?
V: (stumped for a few seconds. ) watts..
P3 : any other?
V: kilo watts ..
P3 : smiles ( i also smile)
P3: then what is ampere?
V : it is the unit of current
P3: wht is switchgear?
V: switchgear is the mechanism used to protect electrical transmission and whenever there is a fault in teh lines it uses a tripping mechanism to protect the
transformers and the generators. switchgear consists of relays and circuit breakers and depending on the relay speed and accuracy circuit breakers protect the electrical systems. ( blah blah....)
P3 : what is electronic switchgear?
V: I dont know. Maybe it is something similar but not sure abt it.
P3: what is electrolysis?
V: Gave them the proper answer with anode cathode and the electrolyte which shud be a liquid with ions so that when electricity is passed the cations move to anode and anions move towards cathode..( something like that which was correct.. the profs were ok with it)
P3: can sugar solution be used.
V: it can be used but it will be a very poor conductor as it doesnt have many ions..salt solutions is used..
P3: can u explain why?
V: usually salt solution consists of a strong cation and a strong anion. In water they easily break up into ions and these ions help in conduction..gave them an example of sodium sulphate kind of salt..( some more blah blah..)
P3: can u give an example where electrolyis is used?
V: a battery is an example though they use a solid electrolyte.
P3: asked a couple more questions which were easy..
P1 : ok ..have u got any more calls
V: yes, I have got calls from all the six IIMs..
P1: Best of luck of them. ( All smile)
V: i smile and say thanks...( go out)
In the middle of the interview a peon comes inside to give tea. Due to the noise and nobody was asking questions then, I looked back to see who it was. I dont think it was a problem.
My profile:
from IITM. (Overall CGPA: 8.1)

hi altruist
i think ur interv was good enough
looking at the peon or not filling the work x time is not a problem unless u urself don't feel embarrased at what u did
u didn't tell us anything about the case study
plz tell that
all other guys also plz tell us more about the case study
what did u tell and what good points were msde by the grou[p
rohit
Thanks rohit..
I could have done better by being proactive..i was a bit stiff initially..
anyway our case study was about Shubha and her boss.. I think somebody has already described that case study before.
fruskee
1S: Anyways who is Sanjay Dutt?

1S: Samajwadi Party, right? (I didnt knew that he was the current sports minister )
errr you sure they asked you who SANJAY dutt was??
if so...you might have made a bit of a booboo.
nithin Saysuh oh, shouldnt that be sunil dutt??? and over that isnt he in congress party and not samajwadi party???
Yeah! That was a typo mistake... (changes made to the original post)
They asked me abt Sunil dutt itself anywayz i goofed up and thought he was from SP. :x
nithin Saysuh oh, shouldnt that be sunil dutt??? and over that isnt he in congress party and not samajwadi party???
right he's congress mp + sports min
Case study :a full page case study. It was about a guy ganesh, with family business of running a hotel near the railway station .facing competition from a dhaba and also issues like parking problem. Losing economically well off customers who were regular before. The family has 300 acres of agri land lying around waste. With the present hotel -cannot expand it as the neighbouring shops dont agree. Also ganesh has 3 brothers. Among them 1 is mcom, 1 is bsc and other 2 uneducated. (there was more seemingly unconnected data.)
I spoke about the u.s.p of the hotel being quality food and should maintain that. Also to clean up the place and make it glitzy looking. First thing anyone coming out of a railway station looks for is a honest looking hotel. So put up that look to the hotel. Also try to expand the building vertically adding new floor space. Then unnecessarily raised the point abt 2 bro being uneducated and 2 educated. I said educated ones should go to their village and explore some ethnic dishes and stuff. Then I realised I made a fool of my self with that stupid point. Then I got back to strategic location of the hotel issue and how to exploit instead of proposals for new hotel somewhere else.
All in all decent participation and some good points. But not very structured thinking display.
Interview: moderators took the interview. My panel had only 2 but other panels had 3 proffs.
P1= first proff, p2= second proff. M= myself
P1: so where are u from?
P1: so what are the 3 regions in a.p??

M: ok. I am not sure if jamnagar is in guj/ rajasthan.
P1: what is dandi??
M: it is a place in gujarat.
P1: y is it famous??
M: dandi march.
P1: doesnt dandi mean the stick of Gandhi??
M: no
P1: what do u know abt dandi march??
M: gandhiji started the non cooperation movement by making salt against the rules.( it wasnt actually abt non cooperation movement J )
P1: what is euro??

P2: all the while he was looking at my certificates.
P2: so u are a mech engg??
P2: I see a lot of management subjects in your course.
M: yes
P2; so what all have u learnt??
M: I will start with industrial management.
P2: ok
M; I learnt various concepts like work study ,time study, wage plans etc.
P2: what is workstudy?
M: explained it.
P2: what are diff methods u use for work study?/
M; dont remember.
P2: what do u learn about wage plans??

M: I dont remember the names and details but I know the broad concepts
P2: cuts me off.
P2: dont u think the case study was practical enough??
M?????
M: yes .very practical.
P2: then how do u think u did in that??
M: decent but not very structured ideas.
P2: which subject are u strong at??
M: applied thermodynamics.
P2: where is thermodynamics applied??
M; every where, starting with engines, aircraft prop, heat transfer etc
P2: carnot cycle??
M: took the paper he gave and drew the diagram
P2: takes it back and gives it to p1
P2; so what is all aluminiun engine??
M: I think its body , cylinder block is aluminium
P2: what is the use??
M: aluminium makes it light weight.
P2: so what materials are generally used?/
M: cast iron.
P2: why? any probs with aluminium?/
M: no. but it has poor heat resistance and high temp. occur in the engine.
P2: so aluminium eng. Are risky??

P2: u may leave now. Thank you.
M; thank you.
Hi all,
name: venkat
bgrnd: 2 years work ex in Motorola Singapore, following my degree in Comp Engg there...
cat scores- 98.9 percentile
There were 25 of us this morning, all guys... one of them, from PG!-Rahul Abraham Mamman...
I had requested to be shifted to this date as I could finish my interviews with Kozhikode in the same trip..
anyway, the gd topic was about this guy called Muthu, who was a bank teller, when his bank gets burgled. He hands over the cash quietly to the burglar and then follows him, fights and retrieves the cash back, suffering a bullet wound in the process.. the public and media shower him with praise, but the bank authorities are more cautious..
Apparently, muthu has violated a company rule of conduct, which says that during the event of a burglary, employees should hand over the cash, raise the alarm when the situation is safe, and then call for police/insurance help.. Senior bank leaders feel that if this sort of conduct is not punished, it may set a dangerous precedent...there are some trade union issues if Muthu's sacked though..what should the chief manager of a bank do?
I think the gd was chaotic to begin with, sometimes with 3-4 people speaking at the same time. but later it kinda got settled down, we got our focus and we were able to agree on what should be done. I thought I did reasonably well, and spoke 6-7 times.. However, I cndt complete my summary ..
Following the gd, we were hanging out outside. talking of how it went...rahul was in the same group as me.. think we did ok, dint we?
I was called for PI. there were 3 gentlemen present (P1, P2, P3)..
After handing over my certs to P3, the interview started..P3 spent 5-10 mins going through the form and certs
P1: So Venkat, why do you want to come back to India?
Ans: general stuff- about india's economy growing, and with a helpful govt., there is a great growth potential, etc etc..
P2: So after your MBA, will you be willing to work in India?
Ans: yes sir, most definitely.
P1: What is your job profile at moto?
Ans: tell them, describing sw devpt model in Moto, GSM tech stuff..
P1(butting in): What is GSM?
Ans: Global system for mobile communications...
P1: What other competing mobile technologies exist?
Ans: Sir, CDMA, wide-band CDMA..
P1: Who are the major players??
Ans: Sir, you mean network operators, or mobile devices?
P1: Network operators...
Ans: In Singapore, GSM is the only standard: we have Singtel, M1, Starhub..in the US we have Verizon, Cingular.. in India we have Airtel, Hutch...CDMA operators in India- Reliance..
P1: What is your favorite subject in university?
Ans: Neural Networks
P1: what is ANN, how does it differ from normal networks.
Ans: told him.
P1: Ok, so tell me what is the Hidden Layer in the NN
Ans: Sorry sir, but I cant recall this. ..
P1: Ok, describe the function of the Hidden Layer??
Ans: Sorry sir, I cant remember..
P1: But you said this was your fav subject?? Ok, draw me the structure of a NN
Ans: ok do that..
P1: asks me a few more techie stuff abt NN
Ans: ans that..
P1: Ok, tell me wat else did you like?
Ans: sir image processing..my final year project was on IP and NN..
P1: Ohh is it? Tell me about Nanyang Tech uni..wat is the history
Ans: told him...
P2: what is the % of chinese and indians in Singapore?
Ans: told him..
P2: Tell me the difference between in chinese and indians..and their similarities
Ans: sir, in what respect?
P2: In business processes, say
Ans: answer this well..
P2: ok tell me about the south east asian currency crisis a few days back..
Ans: ans this beautifullly (i think)...capital market liberalization, currency speculation....fixed exchange rates so on..
P3 (finally looking up from my form): Do you know what happened in Iraq?
Ans: speak abt wmd, and america's war...
P3: That was sometime back..i mean a few days ago??
Ans: oh yes sir, elections just took place... the shia majority won the elections and are currently electing a prime minister..
P3: good, tell me something..you mention in your form that you like o.henry...
Ans: yes sir, i really enjoy his short stories..
P3: is that his real name or what. and why do you like his stories so much?
Ans: tell him...about the twist in the end of each of his stories..
P3: ok give me an example..
Ans: told him about the gift of the magi..
P3: How can this be applicable to mgmt??
Ans: here i get totally stumped...P3 gives me half a min to think...jst get kinda blanked out..
P3: ok never mind, tell me about saki..how does his writing compare to o henry..and is that his real name?
Ans: answer this welll..told them abt their wit (P3 gives a knowing smile)...but Saki's was more savage on the edwardian society that he was living in..told them his name..
P3: How abt wodehouse??
Ans: wodehouse is gentler, more lovable humor...and his use of language is almost lyrical...gave them a catch phrase frm wodehouse...and the world that he creates, is somtehing that everyone reading will want to inhabit..
P3: So differentiate that from utopia
Ans: sir, to me, that IS utopia..
P3: good
they all look at each other as if to see if there are anymore questions..
P1: i think that's all venkat..
P2: which other calls?
Ans: sir Kozhi, Indore and Bangalore..
P2: ok, thanks..
I thank them all and leave...Chit chat with the friendly crowd outside..then leave for home..
Overall performance I think was decent...but my weak points were:
1) i cdnt finish my summary
2) i cdnt answer the o henry relation to management question
3) cdnt answer the neural network question..
strengths
1) GD performance was good, i think..
2) I dint get too flustered when I said "I dunno" to a couple of questions.. and was confident throughout the interview..
3) interview mostly went pretty well
So junta, what do you think??

hi,
It was cool man you are definitely in. They check for thinking process than the answers you give. And looking at the ans. you gave you showed them the attitude, knowledge, intelligence. So i thnk if you have appeared for all other pis the same way, then you have calls from all of them.

No its EOQ. Economic Order Quantity. 😃
Indorehad my IIM-I interview yesterday (25th) in IIM-B at 9.
had a mixed interview....(don't know if it's good/decent or bad:-x)
met a lot of guys..including rahul mamman...(who as usual cracked his interview, guess he'll be posting soon;-)...)
anyway,
my profile:
4th year .Tech Elec.---IIT-M.(my weakest point....absoluely no fundaes in elec!!):-x
cgpa of 8.15.
CAT ---99.98
all 6 calls.
Case Study:
was about some bank teller muthuswamy who chases a bandit, gets shot in the leg and still manages to capture him and hand him over to poilce.but the bank has a policy of not "endangering" lives of employees and customers and muthu seems to have broken it.
muthu's father,a security officer had died under similar circumstances 20 years earlier.
what should the bank manager do??
nice discussion, not chaotic at all.....came in 7-8 times,at least, spoke decently, could complete the summary (wrote in bullet points tho':-x)
Interview Panel:
3 guys,1 sardar jee(S) (had heard a lot about him already.he kept cutting me short thro'out his part of the interview.),P2 and P3.
me = M
S going thro' my file, other 2 looking stoically at me!!
i enter,wish them and sit down,smiles all around.
S-- so,r u an electrical or electronics engineer?
M---sir,we have done courses in both power and electronics.....(.....sufficiently vague to retract later)
S---tell me some courses u have done in power...
M--name some......(volunteer information at this point-don't want to be quizzed on power,so i tell them that i've specialized in VLSI...now,i realize that i shouldn't have done that)
S--hmm,then,tell me what r solid state devices?
M--say something like any device made of semiconductors or using semiconductors.
S--not too happy,says define it.
M---not very clear about defn.,sir
S--is diode a SSD??
M--not sure,but i think not....(immediately regret it,don't know why i said it tho':-x)
S--is thyrisor one?
M--yes,sir.
S---what is high-performance micrprocessor?
M--(apna tdbey had been asked the same question the earlier day and he being a CS guy could not reply it,so how was i expected to??)---anyway,i say something like sir,i haven't heard of a low-performance MP ever,so,i think it's only a mktg. jargon to improve sales.....pathetic answer, rite??
S--okay,then tel me what a MP does?
M--sir,we haven't had a course on MPs as such.....(then recall that we had one:sad:)
anyway he starts frantically going thro' my grade-card.....i tell him immediately that we only had an introductory course on 8086.....by that time,i recall some basic fundaes, answer something decent....tho' S doesn't look interested.P1 and P2 still stoic.
S---(vaguest question of the interview)---how do u classify circuits?
M---stumpedfor some time, saying classify based on what sir??
S---anything!!
M--ok,we have Combinational/Sequential.....Active/Passive......said 1 more,don't remember now.....however,missed analog/digital!!
S---what r linear circuits?
M--explained.
S--difference between Combi/Seq.
M--Explains...
S--r there something called Neural circuits?
M--yes,neural networks do exist.
S--where does it fall?
M--depends on which model u r using?talk about MLP model, which can be loosely called sequetial....
S--cuts me short,says differntiate between combi/sequ/neural circuits?
M---start talking......cut short. by S
S waves his hand to P2,reclines on the chair and starts reading some other guy's form....ignores me thro' out the rest of interview.
P2 takes over....
P2---so,u r a Mensa member,tell me something about it.(in the whole huge IIM-I form,he found only this???)
M--confident about this....answer decently.
P2--what does it do?
M---provides a platfrom for interaction between high IQ people.(that's the stated goal of Mensa, btw).add that personally,i took the test only as a benchmark.
P2---only this?
M--no sir, actually,.in india,it's a new organization.not too many chapters.in US and urope,it acts as a thinktank, come up with views on issues and act as lobbyists.
P2--achha,can anyone write the test?
M-yes.in fact, the youngest members r 11-12 yrs. old.(i could see what he was coming to....)
P2---then,how is he expected to think on issues?
M---it's only 1 aspect.as i said,it's a forum for interaction too.....
P2--ok,tell me some of ur interests.
M--(delighted,at last)....start saying that i love reading, especially on current affairs, macroeconomics and am passonate about politics and history.like football, european leagues and stuff...(really,really, comfortable with all these!!).start saying more.....he cuts me short.
P2--is history relevant?
M--sure sir....(gyan)...end with saying that personally,i find it otherwise interesting too.....
P2---is history relevant to management?
M--had already talked about widening of perspective, deper understanding of issues etc.
i explain it with an exapmple.
sir,i can think of one example here.....say,there is a manager of an NGO....if he doen't know history of the social issues in indian context,he won't be able to do justice to his field.(elaborate on this a lil' bit)....(by now,i could see a smile on his face...don't know why tho')
P2--ok,let's say u're manager of a bank...then?
M--sir,then,it might not be directly relevant but definitely gives a better understanding, say,if we know about economic history...we can learn from the past...
P2---ok,is it relevant to engg.
M---sir,again,maybe not evidently or directly....
hmm,now P3 takes over...
P3---i see ur interest is econmics, tell me some of the recent big issues,sa,in the last 2 months...
M---do u want in indian context or global context!!
P3---indian
M--talk about MFA and patent regime at great length....(my area:smile:.).....end by saying that while former opens up new opportunities for india (which india might not be able to avail of).....but the latter will push up prices of drugs.
(in hindsight tho',should have talked about VAT too...)
P3---tell me more about patent regime.
M--talk about generic product patent and process patent in some detail.....push in examples of ranbaxy and glaxo.
P3---hmm,tell me 2 recent IPOs.
M--jet airways....can't recall of any other ecent one sir.
(should have told them NTPC,Biocon,TCS...
P3---what is india's growth rate position?
M----talk about the RBI report........give sector wise figures too and their contribution to GDP too....
P3---hmm,what is india's FDI position?
M---expected to touch $15 bn. this year......provided that the Posco steel company(S.Korea) deal is finalized....
P3---what is the balance of payments position?
M---talk abouth forex reserves and mention that we're (or were till some time ago) running a current account surplus, but not due to basic econmic strength.....(mention it b'coz i want them to ask me what i mean by that??)
P3---define current account?
M---do it...explain the previous comment too....
P3--capital acount?
M----do it peacefully too.....
P3----ok,if dawood ibrahim sends a gift to his nephew's wedding in india, which account will it come under?
M---(try a lil' humour)....sir,it won't come under any account if sent thro' hawala route (wanted them to ask me hawala too).......,b'coz it's not registered anywhere....(thot' they'll appreciate it...everyone still stoic tho'...S still crashing)
P3--so,it won't be accounted?
M---of course,sir,if it's sent thro' legal channels,it'll be accounted for in current a/c as it's a gift,not investment....
okay thank u....u can leave now!!
i thanked everyone (including S who's still ) and came out...P2 gives a smile....P3 still stoic.
so,guys,this was it??
will want ur views on it?me not too happy with it,especially the S part??
please,guys,post ur views.......
best of luck to everyone.....

What is the source of orgin of these languages ?
I said Sanskrit
????
This was probably the only bloomer in an otherwise flawless performance.
Sorry for nitpicking.
Tamil would have been a better answer.
Ofcourse, all these languages have been influenced by Sanskrit, but don't owe
their origin to it.

RAHUL ABRAHAM MAMMAN SaysI actually said Tamil first...but then they said where is tamil orginating from I said Sanskrit............I still am not sure.....whether that is correct..anyways...dude thanks for doing that ..please do that in the future...
AFAIK, Tamil belongs to a different family altogether. It is probably derived from
an ancient dravidian dialect that we haven't heard of.
Sanskrit is an Indo-European language that originated in Central Asia/NW frontiers of the subcontinent.
Almost all Indian languages are derived from it except for the dravidian ones.
Shirkkant .u are right..I checked on wikipedia...Tamil and Sankrit are independent of each other
I had said Tamil at first..I think they were checking my confidence levels..I made a mistake there..and thanks for pointing it out to me........Hopefully that wont cost me a call :x
But if anyone gets a sardar on the panel ...please be ready with whatever acads you know and he will try to intimidate you...Just be yourself..and you will get through
